If the Hawks beat the Magic, should Woodson keep his job?

I say yes, even though...

I don't like Woody's coaching and I think the Hawks can be better with a better coach...He lacks the ability to strategize effectively on the fly and make proper in-game adjustments, his ISO offense is well-documented as predictable and stoppable, he doesn't get the best from the players (especially on the road), he also never uses the bench consistently and doesn't allow rookies like Teague/Law/Salim to battle thru flaws/errors to transition in their pro game, and he burns the main guys out to the point where they can't close games at times...

But all-in-all, you can't deny progress and success in the playoffs...Dallas dropped Avery when he was consistently improving the Mavs and now they may not get out of the 1st round again for a long time...Unless, we're going to bring in a coach with a system that can clearly take the Hawks to another level and maximize their potential, Isay keep Woody IF he gets us to the FINALS THIS YEAR...

I don't get this board sometimes. There's no question that he would deserve to be brought back after winning 53 games and knocking off the heavily favored Magic. That would be the best year that anyone on this board has witnessed as a Hawks fan.

The problem is that beating the Magic looks like an impossible task(barring injury)after seeing how poorly the Hawks played against a Bucks team w/o Bogut.

Ironically if the hawks beat the Magic the ASG likely won't be able to afford what it would take to bring Woodson back.

A very good point. I've long suspected that if the Hawks lost in the 2nd round in 7 games then Woodson gets another extension. Lose quicker and the ASG looks for someone to get the team over the "hump". Win the series and become a free agent hot property for a team looking to rebuild. I think there are enough job open out there that if the Hawks look good in this series that someone offers Woodson a five year deal (I predicted New Jersey months ago).

Coach Woodson should keep his job if we beat the Orlando Magic unless he seeks a contract that exceeds the budget the ASG have set for a head coach. If Coach Woodson goes, the good relationship Woodson has with his players is what concerns me, and especially Joe Johnson.

I have a feeling I'm going to find these quotes really funny after people find out what the replacement actually turns out to be.

Larry Brown? LOL. Sam Mitchell, Vinny Del Negro, and Tyrone Corbin are the kinds of names I would expect instead.

And any coach COULD take the Hawks past the magic if everything fell just right. But no coach ever born could coach this team to where they would be favorites to beat the magic.

If you let him trade:
Al for Chandler
Josh for Wallace
Marvin for Diaw
Joe for Jackson
Bibby or Crawford for Felton

... maybe he can manage to loose by only 10 points and not 43 ;)

CHA lost by a total of 37pts... in 4 games !!! and they lost it in the fourth most of the time
ATL lost by 43pts in 1 game.

When you think that ATL is supposed to be better than CHA, at least in head to head...
they were on the verge to win 2 of the 4 games (1 and 3) and were led by only 10 points in the last minutes of games 2 and 4.

Let's see what Woody can do now.

True, no coach would coach this team to where we would be favorites, but I'm positive that most coaches not named Eddie Jordan would make sure we didn't get blown out by 50.

Heck, why not just promote Larry Drew? The guys seem to like him, we could hire him for cheap, and we probably wouldn't have to run a stupid gimmick defense that pits Rashard Lewis against Mike Bibby after a single screen.

Larry Brown? No. First of all, Larry Brown would have changed the personnel randomly by now, so it is hard to envision him coaching this set of players.

Also, Woodson is a Brown disciple. If you are looking for a change make a real change. Don't shop in the same branch. Brown is better than Woodson, but we need different.

I think it would be a mistake to assume that Larry Drew is a better coach than Mike Woodson.

of course the Hawks are better than the Cats and by alot, Hawks are better at every position. the Cats are pretty much two legit starter, Jackson and Wallace, and a bunch of scrubs. the only reason why the Hawks/Cats games were so close, was because Larry Brown is alot better than Woodson. if Larry brown didn't coach this year, the Cats would be a lottery team.

That sounds exactly like the Atlanta and Milwaukee fans who hated Stotts...until they found out who the low budget replacements were.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
