Cousins or Favors
The mocks have us picking Favors (assuming we're picking 3):
ESPN - Favors (http://espn.go.com/nba/draft)
HoopsHype.com - Cousins (http://hoopshype.com/draft.htm)
NBADraft.Net - Favors (www.nbadraft.net)
DraftExpress.com - Cousins (www.draftexpress.com)
RealGM - Cousins
Everyone else is saying Cousins. I'm for Derrick Favors @ 3. I just feel Cousins brings low post scoring, and that's about it. I'm not sure he'll be a good defender in the NBA. Favors brings the d and rebounding but isn't a scorer. We need that in the worst way.

Re: Cousins or Favors
I would be all for Cousins if not for his character issues. But I think they're very real concerns.
Cousins could potentially be a real anchor defensively. That size and length is pretty rare. He'll never be a great perimeter defender, but he could be a great anchor. Offensively, I think he could be a great, legitimate 1b option with Tyreke.
Having said all of that, I think he also has an even worse case of Spencer Hawes syndrome where he has a sense of entitlement, and I think that his character issues will not only prevent him from reaching his potential, but could potentially hurt the teams chemistry.
So for me, right now, it's Favors.

If we have to take one or the other, I want Favors. Cousins just has too much bust potential. I see Favors as having the potential to be Al Horford. In reality though if we end up with the 4th pick I wouldnt mind trading down and pick up an extra pick if possible.

Cole Aldrich! hahaha.
Tough choice, I'd probably have to go Cousins just because I have see him exert his potential and he has a lot more than most haven't seen. Favors has some legit upside but just haven't seen him show all the things we've heard about.
Fact is we most likely drop to 5th anyway. hehehe.

Cousins is the risk reward here, and I always go with that choice. He is not just a low post scorer, he's a fantastic rebounder and excellent size to eventually become an great defender with some coaching, not babysitting like Calipari does.

Re: Cousins or Favors
I'd rather have Favors and thats who I think Petrie is going to go with if we get the third pick.
Question for Kings fans:
If you could choose to take the 3rd pick or take a chance on going with the lottery balls, would you take the third pick, or take the chance of falling out of the top three?

i'd take the 3rd pick and be happy about it.... we have a higher chance of picking 4th or 5th pick rather than picks 1-3...

Re: Cousins or Favors
Here's my take on the two:
1. Favors: I know I'm in the minority here, but I rate Favors a smudge higher than Cousins. I like this work ethic and I like how he has focused on rebounding and defense this year. I think he comes into the NBA and is an immediate impact defender and rebounder from Day 1. He truly has all the tools to be a superstar in the league, but I know that we have all heard that too many times. He needs to insert himself more and take over games with his size and athleticism. I'm not giving him a free pass for having poor PG play this year, there were opportunities where he could have stepped up and he fell to the wayside.
2. Cousins: He knows how to use his body and has a nice touch around the rim. He can be a good defender when he wants to but thats what worries me the most about Cousins. How hard does he want it? He gives up on the defensive side to much, but he is highly productive. He puts the ball in the hoop and there is something to be said about that. However, I worry about the bigger bodies he is going to be facing in the NBA. He's got to keep fighting when something doesn't go his way.
For the Kings, I like Favors a lot. He reminds me of Al Horford who I think would be a perfect compliment to Landry/JT upfront.

Everyone is really forgetting Favors had a relatively weak year. Cousins has some concerns, yes, but talent alone, you have to take him.
Cousins.
Cousins.

Re: Cousins or Favors
Okay. Here is my take on these two players: I'm still not sold on either one. But if I had to choose, give me Cousins. Favors to me won't be an impact kind of player I believe. Those two guys remind me of the draft with Howard and Okafor. Persons thought that their was no difference between the two and thought they were interchangable. Well the fact is Dwight was better hands down.
I see Favors as the Okafor here: Strictly defense with a little offense here and there. Cousins to me is the Dwight, only thing is he'll be in the reverse to Dwight -- coming into the league as an offensive player then later on become that defensive anchor; whereas Dwight came in the league as that defensive guru and now gettin the hang of the offensive end.
And yet still I have no clear cut favorite. The mind is telling me Cousins. I'm in the Turner camp so I guess that explains it all.
As for UKF's question: In the Bahamas we call this being "big eye" As the saying goes, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". I'll be quite content with the 3rd pick!! Not being "big eye" and hoping at a chance to get a better pick especially when the odds are REALLY against me!

What is this based on? I believe that Cousins is just an immature kid right now who pouts when things don't go his way. That he's ultra-competitive and gets frustrated quite easily. I think with proper coaching, time and maybe even a sports psychologist to help him cope with his competitiveness that he'll be perfectly fine. I think a lot of his 'tantrums' are just misguided and that he just hates losing and doesn't know how to express it in a socially acceptable manner on the court and this gets misconstrued as a kid who has 'character' issues. I don't think it's 'character' at all. Rather, just a kid that needs to grow up and become a man on the emotional level.
In fact, I see Favors as a hybrid of Rasheed Wallace meets Derrick Coleman. Which if you lit a fire under Derrick Coleman's belly, who just might have had the most skilled big man in the NBA during the 1990's.
I think that's Cousins' upside. I think the extra girth and length that he bring along with being highly skilled in both the post and the high post offensively makes him potentially the #1 center in the NBA going forward. In my opinion, no one's upside is his than Cousin's in this draft, not even Wall.

Honestly I wouldnt even touch Cole Aldrich. I think his potential is someone like Haywood. However, I dont even he will reach that. I see him being a 7 and 5 type of player over his career.

I had my own concerns, so I asked somebody who has been behind the scenes with Cousins a bit. His opinion was that Cousins' character issues are a big concern--that he's a kid that has been handed everything and feels entitled, and that he's the kind of guy who could possibly be a team cancer.
There have just been too many guys like Cousins, that I have see, and really, how many change? I don't mean guys that are immature like Donte Greene where they're just goofy kids who maybe don't take things seriously enough at first. I mean real problems. If Cousins can get over this, he definitely has franchise-level talent. I just don't see guys like him get over problems like this very often.
Cousins is definitely talented enough where he couldn't work hard and still likely be a starting-caliber center for his career. And that would be nice unless he started to really hurt the team's chemistry. At that point though, I'd just rather have the really athletic big with a great attitude and great tools.
I'm assuming you meant to refer to Cousins, not Favors with your Coleman/Sheed argument. In that case, I'd say this--nobody ever could light a fire under Coleman's belly. His belly was fire proof, you could say. Some guys just don't want it.
I wish these things weren't true about Cousins. But then again, if they weren't true and very real concerns, he'd likely have a very good chance of slipping into the top 2 (depending on how things shake out with given teams).

Re: Cousins or Favors
I'm sure Petrie will have this all in mind when he has Cousins in for the interview, especially given Spencer's recent whinny history.
Still, I'd take Cousins over Favors even with character issues. It's just simply PBA.

Re: Cousins or Favors
For me It's cousins as the 1st choice and then Favors.
Cousins has the potential to be a 1st option big man and be elite at it. His ability to dominate the competition should translate to the NBA level. He also has plenty of potential on the defensive end, he's never showed the enthusiasm on defense that he does on offense but I think a good coach could get solid effort out of him on the defensive end. In my mind this guy is like a smaller shaq and should have a mismatch almost all the time. He's got tons of skill in many ways as a post up guy and a guy who has solid passing skills and he cant put the ball on the floor.
Favors is ok on offense and has potential through the roof but soooo much of it is based on his athleticism and if he doesn't develop the skill level picking him could be extremely disappointing. His defensive potential is excellent and should translate well to the nba as both a man defender and shot blocker.
Between the 2 We need to go with Cousins.
