OT | Vikings' Proposed New Stadium Plans

Post#1 » by MikeIsGood » Tue May 4, 2010 5:46 pm

NFP Story
Vikings are, of course, one of the teams oft-mentioned to potentially move to Los Angeles, so I thought this could be of interest. There's another bit of interest, too...

1) Outside? Not that it really matters. I would think that Favre would actually be retired - honestly - by the time this thing would get built. But that wasn't really the point in posting this; just a side note (let's try to keep the Favre discussion otherwise in the Favre thread). It appears they'd actually be looking to take advantage of their geographical location, rather than giving their visitors the Christmas gift of a dome to play under.

2) $791M, including a 40-year lease. No one else has a lease that big. And the Vikings themselves only desire to spend up to $210M. Proposed payment on their part is $264M. Rest of the money would come from proposed taxes on merchandise, hotels, rental cars, and even a lottery scratch-off game.

I don't want to see the Vikings move to L.A. because the rivalry is too much fun. That being said I always thought it would make a lot of sense geographically if the Vikings moved L.A. The Vikings could join the NFC West and St. Louis could join the NFC North.

Here is a link to the proposed L.A. stadium, it looks pretty cool...

Gorgeous. Love the design. Awesome that it's built into the ground.

I agree on not wanting them to move. As much as i hate the Vikings, i love the rivalry and would hate to see it vanish.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... committee/

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Only two days after a bipartisan bill to build a new Vikings stadium was introduced, the measure has died.

Mike Kaszuba of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the 10-9 defeat came only hours after another House committee had approved it. But as Kaszuba points out, "[A]t this stage of the legislative session, set-backs for major bills can sometimes be only temporary."

Which means that most of the time it isn't only temporary.

Which means that in the case it could be permanent.

Which means that those L.A. Rams fans who used to wear watermelons as hats might soon be able to add horns to their headgear.

Ouch!

Ouch is right.

I agree with not wanting to lose them as a rival. At the same time I would laugh endlessly at Minnesota in general if it happened.

The L.A. guys have stated that they're targeting teams that can't get a new stadium built and aren't financially successful. Minnesota has struck-out swinging for a new stadium for years now, and they're annually either the worst or among the worst in the NFL in revenue - something that really won't be rectified anytime soon without a new facility.

IF Minnesota were to move would the Rams be put into the NFC North and the Vikings be put into the NFC West?

Minnesota has some weird politics:

From Patrick Kessler(MN political reporter) on twitter:

Not dead yet: MN Senate Cmte passes Vikings Stadium bill 9-3.

Vikes Stadium bill can be added as amendment at any time in either body until the last gavel of the year comes down.

I remember reading how that would be what happens if the Vikings end up in LA.

The rivalry is great, but having the Rams in our division would also have its perks. Rams, Lions, Bears in the same division.. that wouldn't even be fair.

Vikings would have the Cards, Seahawks, and 49ers. That would be pretty favorable to them as well.

It wouldn't happen for at least a few years, and the Lions have made some really nice moves the last couple offseasons, while the Bears have a QB and have added some big pieces too. St. Louis sucks right now but anything can happen in the NFL. In other words, there's no telling for sure how the division will look this year, let alone 3-4 years from now.

Thanks for the NFC North update. What QB do the bears have?

I could care less about the other teams in our division. We're built for the future and will be contenders annually. Once Brent leaves your VIkes it's back to the drawing board. The Bears are da Bears. They're their own worst enemies. The Lions may be on to something, but they're still a couple seasons away.

I think Cliff's a Chicago fan. And I agree with you that we are built for the future and will likely contend for the division crown annually, but he brings up a good point that a lot can happen in 3-4 years. If the Lions or Bears hit on a couple draft picks and signings they could be right up there with the Pack.
