Patrick Ewing - Head Coach?

Post#1 » by evildallas » Fri May 7, 2010 10:27 pm

Patrick reiterated in an interview that he'd like to be a head coach. What type of head coach do you think he'd make?

Thought about marking this OT, but as we will likely be looking for a replacement coach soon I decided not to.

My take: I'm not sure if he's ready yet in all aspects, but I think he'd at least have the ear of the players.

I'll throw Clifford Ray's(Boston's big man coach) name in there as well. Perkins,Big Baby,Jefferson, and Powe all exceeded expectations.

I talked to Clifford Ray this year and asked him if he had any desire to be a head coach right now and he said that he's satisfied with his current position. I wish we could steal him from Boston even if it's just to coach our big men. Very friendly man!

Patrick Ewing deserve a shot unlike someone like Mark Jackson who wants to be handed the keys to a contender. I think Patrick would do fairly well and if Woodson does indeed get fired the ASG should show Patrick some respect by interviewing him. The fans that like to have conversations with the head coach probably won't take to Patrick very well because he tends to avoid them.

Personally, I just can't Ewing as a successful head coach.

What do you dislike about him? Do you credit him for any of the success Dwight Howard and the Magic have had?

I would love to get Clifford Ray down here as a big man coach. If we could do that then I'd love to land Solomon Alabi or either Dexter Pittman or Jerome Jordan (2nd round) in the draft to give him young projects to work with. Maybe Garrett Siler returns from China. From his past efforts I say that if we give he a couple willing students he can make them into real Cs. Not to mention what he could do to help Al and Josh with the big man game.

Successful players often transition poorly to head coach, but I think that may be because they get handed jobs and don't prove themselves as assistants for multiple years. My concern about Ewing is that I don't know his responsibilities in Orlando and whether he's picked up enough as an assistant to be ready for head coaching spot at this time. I think he'd ultimately get there if given the chance.

The topic is on the Magic board about Patrick. Orlando Board

Mixed reviews from the Orlando board. I think his name recognition would boost fan interest a little and his player rep would hold more weight with Josh, etc. I just don't know about his motivational skills and philosophical and strategic approaches to the game. I would definitely invite him in for a good long interview if I'm the ASG to find these answers. Of course it doesn't always work that way as the NBA is often more of a network of whom you know or have worked with before. Sund most likely goes after someone who he's worked with before. A vet retreat coach like a Hill or Weiss.

Back on the concept of stealing Ray from Boston. I've always wanted ownership willing to spend to upgrade the whole staff. Ray as big man coach. I'm fond of Chip Engelland as shooting coach (Spurs). As great of a shooter as Mark Price was/is, I side with the results shown from the students not the teacher and Engelland has coached them up wherever he's been. Given the lack of injuries I can fault our trainers, but I've always heard great things about the Suns trainers (miracle workers with some vets). I've often wondered if one of their staff could replicate the results out on his own. It's a pipe dream because the deep pockets are not there with the ASG, but maybe it doesn't take the deepest pockets but rather the will to spend in certain areas.

It's not that I dislike Ewing, he's done a decent job with Howard, but he's had mixed reviews towards Howards development. I do think Ewing gets "media consideration" for coaching opportunities more because of his name, than his coaching accomplishments.

I have yet to see an NBA team actually put him in the mix for a HC position.

He's not SVG's 2nd, or even 3rd asst coach......which isn't the tell all by any means.....but I'm not sure he brings the whole package to the table as a HC candidate. (Charisma, x's and o's,)

He's in a tough situation, but I wish him the best, however, I've seen this same situation repeat itself so many times through the years without much success.

Before our final playoff game started I went to the visitors side to talk to a usher that I have known for years and the players call her mamma. When Patrick Ewing walked off the court I said "The future Coach of the Atlanta Hawks"...Patrick responded "I wish"

For the record: It's not like I actually want Patrick as our head coach.
