It's about time!!

http://www.realgmfootball.com/src_wiretap_archives/6212/20071023/nfl_shortens_first_2_draft_rounds/

From the piece:
PHILADELPHIA -- The NFL on Tuesday cut from 15 minutes to 10 the time between picks in the first round of its draft after a 2007 record round of 6 hours and 8 minutes.

It also moved the starting time of the draft from noon ET to 3 p.m. and limited the first day to two rounds instead of three.

"We believe this will make for a more streamlined and efficient draft," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement issued during the league owners meetings.

The change also applied to the second round, which will go from 10 minutes to seven between choices for next year's draft, which will be held April 26-27 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Hallelujah! There's only so much airtime I can handle, so much Mel Kiper Jr. I can handle, so much pointless speculation and premature evaluation any one person can take. I might actually consider going to the draft again now.

There is a radio guy in dallas, Norm Hitzges, who broadcasts the entire NFL and NBA drafts. He loves these events, and even he was glad they cut the time.

i have no problem with them shortening the draft picks but i hate what they're doing to the draft.

i hate the shortening to 2 rounds and i loathe the moving it to 3 o'clock. i have a hard enough time waiting til 12 for it to start but theyve moved it back every year for the past 5 years. its still gonna end around 9 if they're starting at 3 so i dont see the point in this.

i want 3 rounds and i want it to start at 12, you want to shorten it more, make the 2nd and 3rd rounds 5 minutes.

they're making this thing to much about tv and money instead of teams focusing on there futures, so id be fine if they still had 15 minutes in round 1

Not really. It probably diminishes their prestige a little and might hurt their initial contract, but other than that, a 3rd rounder in 2008 is no better/worse a prospect than in earlier years. Depending on the draft pool of course, and this one isn't real deep.

yea thats what i was thinking, hearing that you were a day 2 pick almost sounds like a bit of a slight towards the player.

as for the draft not being deep, it seems like every year draft people say this or its a weak class, i think even in the bush/mario williams/VY draft people were saying that

I think alot of the more old-school pundits thought that class was thin, but guys like McShay, Mayock, Nawrocki from PFW, my friend Charlie Robinson from Yahoo, myself, several others all thought that was one of the best potential classes in years. That draft and the year before it might wind up being two of the deepest, most successful drafts of all time. Last year wasn't bad but featured a lot of guys with some warts. This year doesn't seem to have a great deal of star potential or freakish undeveloped talent (think Demarcus Ware or Brandon Jacobs), but a lot of guys who have higher floors but lower ceilings after about the first 12 or so picks. An example:
I'm a big Keith Rivers fan in this upcoming draft, and he's a solid 10-20 pick, but I kind of doubt he ever sees a Pro Bowl or becomes a great player. More of a guy you can count on for several years to be a good starter. This draft seems loaded with guys of that ilk IMO.

yea, i just think its weird hearing from several draft niks every year its not a very deep class

i dont see many big time players, i wont be shocked at all if the big 3 qb's dont ever become more than above average qb's, especially the way 1st round qb's have been performed lately
