AJC: Six-point plan to fix Hawks

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue May 11, 2010 3:07 pm

Fixing the Hawks: fire Woodson, trade Joe, keep Josh

1.) Make a coaching change.
2.) Sign-and-trade Joe Johnson.
3.) Don’t trade Josh Smith.
4.) Acquire a center (or Chris Bosh):
5.) Bench Mike Bibby:
6.) Get tougher:

With all smoke, and wounds from the fire of the blazing, smash fest of a whooping ORL just gave us, I'll still say that there's no true reason to force a trade of Joe Johnson. Yeah, I know his idiotic statements after Game 3 leaves a sour taste in a lot of fans mouth. But, what it should have done was clearly and undoubtedly show that he is not a leader to take this team to the ring. He is not a poor player at all, he is not a superstar either.

He turn down a overpaid deal from us last summer for the chance to prove that he was worth more, and he FAILED!!! So we gained leverage in the matter of whether how much we choose to pay if we keep him. But, when you really think about it, Joe set his self up for failure in turning down that deal last summer. Because he should've known that Woodson would not provide this team with the system to go further, and Joe would still be put in the Super ISO-driven offense that teams already figured out the year before. Joe killed his own chance to get the Superstar MONEY - LoL!!! This should serve as a lesson to Joe to be a team player/leader and STOP BEING SELFISH!!!

What we need more is a new coach and lineup changes to get the most out of these guys.

I don't know. Looks similar to what I posted a few days ago in this thread http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1009301

I didn't specifically say S&T Joe, but it was assumed that he wasn't back. I had:
1. Coaching change.
3. Don't trade Josh.
4. Acquire a big (I don't think Bosh is a solution as he plays the same position as 2 of our keepers).
5. Start Teague.

You could argue that by advocating getting a defensive stopper to start at SG is akin to get tougher (6). I went more into changing the offensive and defensive systems, but I'm in line with the article's key points.

As far as the thought on keeping Joe. If Joe accepted playing within a different system and a more affordable deal then sure he's a good player, but someone will offer him more than he's proved he's worth. Resigning him will mean overpaying him. Is that what you think should happen?

Funny you say that as I thought it reflected some similarities I stated in a thread on here this morning. Maybe Jeff reads our forum

Keeping Josh means Horford would be playing the 5, a position we desperately need size. We will get swept in the 2nd round for the next 10 years if we keep our frontcourt like that. Smith's got to go. The guy has some reasonable trade value and is young even though he's as dumb and uncoachable as they come. Anyway, some teams might have some interest. I agree with everything else except starting Teague. He's way too raw to start, blame it on Woodson and his wonderful rotation schemes.
GO HAWKS.

Name a center better than Josh Smith going forward that the Hawks could realistically acquire.

Kaman isn't as good as Smith and they just drafted a PF with the 1st pick in 2009. Bosh is not a center and I'd bring Kevin Willis out of retirement before I started Eddy Curry.

I admire the passion of wanting an instant fix, but I groan at the lack of understanding the reality of the situation. The available bigs via trade aren't really starting solutions. Bosh isn't a C and would be playing out of position as much if not more than Al. Kaman might have been cheap to acquire last year, but had a breakout season. Curry is a joke. Perhaps Brendon Haywood or Joel Pryzbilla might be good stopgaps, but are they available? The true solution is to invest in young bigs and coach them up. Maybe you miss, but maybe you hit a home run. I give the team credit for trying this with Randolph Morris, but he's not come along very far. There are a lot of potential bigs in this draft. If we choose wisely and coach well we might have C as a team strength 3 years down the road.
