Will this count for renting the games from gamefly?

This is an interesting thing to think about. On one hand it makes sense for EA, because anyone buying a used game is not their customer so it doesn't really matter if that person is pissed off. On the other hand, they are screwing over their actual customers by taking away the resale value of your purchase.

I think this will most definitely drop the price that Gamestop sells used online games for, to compensate they will drop the price they are willing to pay for them as well.

If I understand how it's going to work, there will be a code you get when you buy the game new. Enter the code, and you're good to go. If you buy it used, or need a new code for whatever other reason, that's what you have to buy. Like I said before, I'm curious what this will do to the rental market. I don't think it'll help it, that's for sure.

I could see them entering into a deal with the major rental companies(Blockbuster, Gamefly, etc...) and creating temporary codes that are good for say, 1 week. Then when you rent a game you get a 1 week code, if you rent a game for longer than a week the company you rent from could just give you another code.

This was ridiculously shortsighted of me, but I didn't even think of them making their profit back by dropping the price they give the consumer who is selling the game. I agree with you guys, now. I could definitely see that happening.
That really sucks. Have to pay the same amount to buy it used as you did before, but now you get less when you sell it. Obviously it fulfills their purpose, though, of helping to lessen the used game market.

Re: OT EA charging $10 to play multiplayer on used games!
I personally don't sell my used games and I rarely buy used games. I still have all of my old NES, SNES, Genesis, etc... games I could never justify selling something for 25% of what I paid for it.

Re: OT EA charging $10 to play multiplayer on used games!
And I rarely don't sell my games. There are some I've kept, and if you have them long enough that the value you'd get for them is negligible it obviously doesn't make sense, but if I can get a good return I do it. Trade them in for something I'll play. Amazon has some great trade-in deals every now and again, and you can turn right around and use the credit to buy new games (which they usually have good deals on). And on the chance that I do run into a used game at a good price, I'll buy it. Really don't care if it's new or not as long as it works.

1 week trial periods are already part of the EA plan.

Yeah, they have already implemented that with the Battlefield series, you have to pay for a 'VIP' code to be eligible for new downloadable content. If you bought the game used and want to get new maps, you have to shell out 15$ for a code.

Gotcha. Yeah, chuckles, I was thinking they'd probably do the same type of thing. Otherwise, that would kill Gamefly, and probably finish off Blockbuster, among others.

Re: OT EA charging $10 to play multiplayer on used games!
Gamers need to get used to this sort of thing, along with micro transactions. Micro transactions are going to be a large source of revenue for gaming companies going forward. You already see it with being able to buy small add ons for games, maps for a FPS, novelty items in WoW and such. It is already very commonplace in the Asian game market and only starting to become a more regular thing here in the US. For a while all of these things were typically released as free updates and add ons, you are going to start seeing more and more of them shift to small fee based updates, hence micro transactions

We need to get used to the video game industry monetizing every possible thing so they can nickle and dime you to death? We need to get used to the video game industry stripping the consumer of the resale value of their purchases? I disagree. The consumer should be heavily fighting these things.

You can try to fight them all you want, not going to change what is going to be coming
Unfortunately a large part of the reason why these new revenue streams are needed is due to piracy.
So yeah, I'm not in favor of it but I don't think there is anything the consumer can do to change it.

Re: OT EA charging $10 to play multiplayer on used games!
You just said what you can do. Don't buy any DLC.
Unfortunately there are too many people who will give activision 15 dollars for 3 new maps for anything to change.
Your post also bring up another point that can be debated until the cows come home. Is every pirated game really a lost sale?

I'd say no to that question. There are some games I'd never pay money for, but if I got a free copy, sure, I'd play it, at least a little bit. So, it's not a lost sale.

Re: OT EA charging $10 to play multiplayer on used games!
Ryan already addressed that every pirated game isn't always a lost sale, but plenty of lost games are a lost sale.
You also made my point very clear, sure you and I can boycott micro transactions as a form of actual game content but there are so many people out there who won't buy it that it will be pointless. I have not as of yet bought anything of the such even though I've had plenty of games that I've played that have content you can pay for, but I assure you it will be the way of the future whether we like it or not. Everyone is out to make money and this is a good way to do it.

Oh yeah, the micro transactions aren't going anywhere. Take games like the Call of Duty series for example. They come out with new map packs for online play and tons of people buy them. It can actually be a decent way to extend the life of the game and make some extra money on it at the same time.

Yes, it is very key in online games because games like that have upkeep costs. If a company makes a console game that has no online play you sink your costs into producing the game, marketing, manufacturing and the such and then you get your money back and profit via sales.
If you have an online game you need to patch it to fix bugs/exploits, add new content has always been a pretty normal thing for online games, update the graphics, etc... So yeah, I understand why they do it and have no real problem with it, I'm sure someday I'll even participate just haven't felt inclined so far.
