Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson is out after the team declines to renew his contract, according to NBA.com :rockon:

NBA.COM is the 1st to report a coach firing? Atlanta is such a terrible sports town(media included).

Sekou broke it. The official announcement is this afternoon. It's not unreasonable that Sekou would have the connections with Woodson or the club to break it.

What? I don't understand, a new coach might install an offense and play a young guard for reasons other than 'grittiness.'

Wow, you must have a much higher opinion of Mike Woodson than anyone outside of his immediate family. I don't think changing the coaching staff would lead to implosion. To the contrary I look forward to Josh and Marvin realizing there are different ways to do things.

FINALLY! 2 years ago, this whole town has been asking for this move.

Now, will this team, minus JJ, take on another personality that makes them perform better. The one guy that I see that can adapt is Horford. Every other starter is in question.

Let the speculation begin, and I never thought anyone would suggest Sam Mitchell, but he did take Toronto to the playoffs. Can someone elaborate on his strengths / weaknesses?

I hate to see anyone lose the job, I think even Woody would say it time to leave. Good luck Woody, I know you will be fine and hopfully you will land on you feet somewhere

Toronto fan here. Mitchell is a good player's coach but his playbook is pathetic and he'll get outcoached a lot. You would prolly do better with a veteran coach who can instill a system. If you search the Raptor board you might find many posts mocking Mitchell's plays and coaching.

IF you're worried about your coach getting outcoached in a 7 game series, don't get Mitchell.

If the Hawks don't re-sign Joe...player development is more important than actual X and O's. Cheeks,Thibodeau,and Corbin would be decent hires in my books.

Cavs rumored to have fired Mike Brown thus knocking the Woodson story out of the news.

If we're going to start naming replacement candidates, I still like the thought of Monty Williams (Portland Assistant) or Thibodeau (Boston Assistant). I just hope the new coach never says "I'm not here to coach effort" or anything remotely as stupid like the last one.

I hope we don't wait to be the last one to hire our new coach? That is, unless we don't plan on making a big splash, or unless our coach is still int he playoffs?

My top 3: Thibodeau, who has earned a shot, but we are going down the Woody route again?
Avery Johnson, who knows a PG is needed as the leader...my Option #1.
Dwayne Casey, who probably won't get a shot since he was the Seattle choice after HIll and Sund were let go. Casey needs more time than he got in either Seattle or Minnesota.

Avery did a nice job of turning the Mavs defense around....but he might be the only coach(Karl is up there)who calls more iso's than Woody and I don't think he's very friendly to young players.

Thibodeau and Corbin are often praised for their work with young players. I think those are the type of coaches we need to go for if we are going the assistant route. I've never heard of Monty Williams before today.

Well then Monty needs a new press agent. He played for Notre Dame, was a late 1st round pick of the Knicks back in 94. Bounced around the league until 2003 including stops in San Antonio, Orlando, and Philadelphia. Has been an assistant to Nate McMillan in Portland since 2005.
