I believe it's against the spirit of the CBA, but not against the CBA. As the article mentioned they are publicly traded stocks so he can in fact purchase them. If Lebron truly is all about money that would be a very good angle imo. He has mentioned wanting to be a billion dollar athlete, so we'll see.

Not sure about the legality of any of this at all.

some info on MSG:

anyone here know the legality of any of this?

Also not sure how much the stock would truly soar as the Knicks seem to be a small part of MSG itself.

http://jay-mariotti.fanhouse.com/2010/0 ... n-chicago/

Jay Marriotti reports:

In Chicago to play golf at a suburban country club -- yes, he still gambles on 10-foot putts -- Michael Jordan was asked The Question by one of the organizers. No, it wasn't whether LeBron James' mother had an affair with loaded-gun-toting teammate Delonte West, a rumor her attorney strongly denies, but, rather, where her precious Bron Bron will play next. Normally, Jordan doesn't speculate on the business of others, but this week, he couldn't resist in opining like everyone else.

"Chicago,'' he said.

Again, if he goes there, he will have a really hard time justifying to anyone that his first objective is winning championships. He along with Bosh are nothing more than a 2nd round Eastern conference team.

If winning is his number one priority, he'll choose Miami or Chicago, along with some sign and trade scenarios such as the Mavs and Lakers.

At the end of this free agency we'll know what is most important for Mt. James. Loyalty, winning, or money.

Welcome to Miami, LeBron, where Pat Riley has the rings and the every Heat game might be televised nationally in one of the biggest collaborations in sports history. That's where you play the next four or five years, big guy. The Heat are beckoning Wade to re-sign with a campaign on the team's Web site, but to date, there is no such effort for James. Maybe the marketing people might want to start ramping that up, because the pairing is more possible than anyone seems to think. And maybe Riley, still gooing up his hair after all these years, might want to promise James he'll shift to the sideline for a bit.

Damn...Mariotti is cold....lol he really hates Reinsdorf...

BTW...cool though that MJ thinks LBJ will go to Chicago

The editor of Forbes and Michael Jordan are now chiming on "Where Will Lebron Go?"

This has gotten so out of hand that if Lebron stays in Cleveland I think the entire basketball world will hate him for making everyone go through this BS.

Can't see a legality issue. MSG is a public stock. Anyone can buy. You are allowed to buy stock in a company you work for.

It would be against the CBA if LeBron were given stocks. It is not against the CBA if LeBron (or Worldwide Wes, or you, or me) chooses to invest his own money in a public stock.

I'm sure LeBron will listen to Mariotti. Jay is notorious for giving really sound advice to athletes and always having their best intentions in mind.

Yeah Mariotti will be Mariotti. But Jordan will be Jordan---with his compulsive gambling. Perhaps this is a signal that his money is on Lebron to Chicago and we all know how much Michael Jordan hates to lose.

Agreed. Bulls get hometown hero. Blake Griffin goes to L.A. Stern covers up the gun fiasco with John Wall. If only the Knicks or Celtics had landed Oden I would be fully convinced.

Is it me or with Orlando losing so badly, is this a bad thing for us as Lebron may view it as well he was extremely close, just need one more piece in Cleveland?

If it's a Boston/L.A. Finals LeBron will see a pair of teams with multiple all-stars and big time weapons. I would think that would merely reinforce his belief that he needs at least another all-star or two to play alongside him.

sure sure it all sounds good. Everything is falling into place. The thing to fear is Reinsdorf and co. doing all the talking. Probably Reinsdorf getting all offended if he perceives arrogant demands from the Lebron camp. Concluding wrongly that Lebron needs the Bulls more than the Bulls need Lebron. It may sound antithetical to the religion of making money, but I can see Reinsdorf (and co.) looking ironically like the real arrogant ones compared to other ownership and other team brass, who will probably do a more agreeable process in front of Lebron. Like, I bet Reinsdorf plays hardball, and Lebron probably doesn't want to see that Bulls front office ego crap.
