Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
I think Shaq would retire before playing for the MLE. He's not going to go from 21 million to five, especially to play for the Bobcats. To get him to come here for a year or two, I think it would probably cost us 8-12 mill per year. I'm sure he'd give a discount to a championship team, but we aren't a championship team. That's a lot to contribute to an old guy that's probably going to give you 30 minutes a game for 60 games.

Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
What are you basing that on? No one is going to give him 8-12m per. He only played 23 or so mpg for the Cavs this year, I wouldn't expect him to play 30 anywhere. I feel like people said the same thing about Iverson... and then he signed for the vet minimum. Obviously he wasn't very good, so I'm bringing up something that doesn't support my general thought process, but IDK... I guess I'll just respect your opinion, I don't think I can change it.

Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
Of course no team is probably going to offer him 8-12 per year, but if we're going to convince him to come here, I think it's going to take a number in that price range. He has no incentive to come here unless he's getting paid more than what he'd get paid elsewhere. I'm just saying, if he can choose between Cleveland, Charlotte, New Jersey, or a few other teams at the MLE, we aren't getting him.
I can't really explain Iverson, he's just had a year to forget about. I almost feel sorry for the guy.

Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
And here's my counter. Cleveland is capped out without LeBron, NJ has Lopez and is hoping to get a max guy or two... everyone has an MLE to use if they want. I think we have as much incentive to offer him as a lot of other non contenders--a contract and a starting spot with a HOF coach he can fade into the sunset with.
It's not like he HAS to go ring chasing, he's got 4 of those.

He's an ego maniac. You make your pitch to him based on him being a piece that could really make a difference on this team. How he could be a leader here, a vital part that will have a significant impact on our chances.
You appeal to the legacy he wants to leave the game with - as a wash up who was on the Cavs team that got smoked by the Celts or as a part of a three headed monster (MJ, LB and Shaq) that took a non-factor of a team and helped form them into a significant threat.
Also, you give him the chance to go up against Dwight all season.

Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
Everything other than "no" in this thread makes me sad as a Bobcats fan.
I have no clue why anyone would even entertain the idea of bringing Shaq in. Even if it wasn't difficult financially (to say the least...), its still just makes no sense basketball wise. The guy clogs the lane, he'll be a defensive liability, he needs to be force fed to be effective, he can't hit free throws, the fact that he's going to miss 20+ games again, he won't be able to give us more than 25 minutes per, the ego, the fact that he'll talk trash about the team once he leaves (like he has done with EVERY team that he's left).
No.

I didn't read this whole thread, but is Shaq even at his age not better than all of our C's?

Thanks guys.
(Secretly I hope the Bobcats suck for a couple more seasons because I love the ridiculously low ticket prices)

Re: the idea Ajinca could get 35 mpg, that guy couldn't break the rotation with the Frankencenter rotation we had this past season. Unless he makes huge strides during the offseason, Ajinca is going to be a wasted draft pick.

Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
Some people just want to see the team fail. Unless he makes some huge jump in SL or Preseason play, I think he's more equipped for the 13 free minutes behind the starter's 35, not just being forced into 35 minutes to spite the fo and fans.

Re: We Should Try To Sign Shaq
We drafted the guy, we gotta at least play him to see if he can put it together on the court.
Look at Joe Alexander. Horrible, horrible bust of a player - he got on the floor to at least prove to the fanbase that he's worthless. Sean May, same thing. If the guy is a failure, I want to see him fail.

Ajinca is too frail to play center, (diaw) should be traded after we resign TT and Ajinca should back up TT as a PF, I think he could excell as a backup PF, i'm hoping he can turn into the next Andray Blatche, sign a long term cheap contract then starts beasting

Alexis has beefed up a lot since the last time he's played in a regular season game for the Bobcats.
Just look at McGee for the Wizards. He was a stick figure when he first got into the league. Now he's the best big man on their roster (Blatche is the PF equivalent to JR Smith, take that however you want). I'm just not going to trash a guy who's never even got a chance to play more than 20 minutes in a NBA game - especially when he's still making the transition from international play under one of the greatest rookie-haters in the league. If you want to take a chance on a player, its always the better decision to take a chance on your own rookies instead of bringing in someone else. They either fail right in front of you, making it easy to get rid of them without worries, or they succeed and you get lock them up for half a decade and pat yourself on the back. With a guy that you bring in, they either succeed, or handicap your roster for the full length of their contract not to mention you get "idiot" stamped to your forehead for endorsing the deal.
