After WALL Goes #1 (EDITED)! MEM-NJN-PHI

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Sat May 22, 2010 5:39 am

***I messed up by muddying up this deal with the notion that the Wizards might take Turner 1st instead. That isn't going to happen, and it didn't help illustrate this deal anyway. I've since altered the selected player at #2 for the Nets to the player who will actually be there, Evan Turner. I do still hope to get feedback, as I think it's a salvageable idea. I just introduced it the wrong way. Sorry.***

ESPN'S Trade Machine

Memphis: Thabeet/Conley for Harris/Jianlian
The Grizzlies upgrade the PG position and get a young 7-footer who adds long-range shooting.
Harris, Mayo, [Gay], Randolph, Gasol
(Williams), (George), (Robinson), Jianlian

New Jersey: Harris/Dooling/Jianlian/#27 for Brand/Conley/#2
The Nets absorb salary and take a risk with EB, but get a 2nd high-lotto pick, while maintaining max capspace.
Williams, (Turner), [James], (Cousins), Lopez
Conley, Lee, Roberts, Brand, (Jordan)

Philadelphia: Brand/#2 for Dooling/Thabeet/#27
The Sixers wipe over $15mil in '10 capspace, and add an intriguing C prospect.
(Dooling's contract is only $500K guaranteed, and NJN can send $ to cover the buyout)
Holiday, Williams, Iguodala, Young, Dalembert
(Bledsoe), Green, Kapono, Speights, Thabeet

That looks absolutely horrible for Philly- I really can't see them using a franchise altering point guard like John Wall just to dump Brand's contract. I'm not really sold on Jrue Holliday tho, am I the only one that thinks it's absolutely garbage for Philly and a pipe dream for the Nets?

So wait, let me get this right...

The Wiz screw the pooch and take the 2nd best player 1st... making the 2nd pick more valuable then previous (though worse fitting for philly), and so Philly then trades this franchise altering point guard for some financial relief and two bench players?

Seriously?

OK, I may have made a mistake by even introducing the idea of WAS not taking Wall, or that PHI would trade Wall when he was gift-wrapped to them. If I'm reading feedback correctly, THAT has gotten more negative response than the actual mechanics of the trade itself, which I feel are relatively sound from a value perspective.

If the draft goes as predicted, with John Wall #1 to Washington, would PHI be open to this type of deal? As far as salary dumps go, getting back last year's #2 pick and a late 1st is at least in the ballpark, right? I mean, it beats ALOT of the offer I've seen around here, but let me know if I'm way off-base...

You're way off-base... and the other offers are worse.

a) There's a big difference between the #2 pick and the second-best player in hindsight. Thabeet was NOT the second-best player in that draft. If Curry or Evans was offered, Philly would listen.
b) The Sixers are only $2-3 million over the cap. There are much better ways to cut salary than to give up the #2 overall pick and stomp all over your fanbase's hopes.
c) Despite random BS thrown up by journalists, Philly doesn't WANT to give up the #2. So, a team is going to have to overpay to get it... especially when the player projected at the spot (Turner) fills a desperate need to the Sixers (SG).

I see you have Terrence Williams playing the point for New Jersey. Do you think he can actually handle being a starting pointguard? I'm not trying to imply anything but am curious as to whether he can play that position.

Well, he has handled PG duties very well for us, and can defend PGs, SGs and SFs. And with Turner and a yet-to-be-determined FA point forward in our starting lineup, I think there would be more than enough play-making ability on the floor.

I'd go so far as to say it may be his best position. His passing ability is top notch. His biggest problem was shot selection but he recognized that and improved greatly towards the end of the season. I've actually been wondering if NJ may be better off starting Williams at the point moving Harris, but that would depend on what the return for Harris would be.

It would leave us thin at PG, but I like the return. I see Conley in the lineup but not in the incoming trade pieces, if we get him in the deal it makes me feel a little better, if T-Will can play the majority of the point for us, its a great deal, given we get a max FA. Really hate taking on Brand but i really think if we still had max room id take on brand and 2, if philly got a return theyd like

First, you tell me why PHI deserves Mayo and Thabeet when they get to unload Brand.
