Building The Bench

Post#1 » by Em1 » Sat May 22, 2010 5:11 pm

What free agents do we bring in?
-Rookie First Rounder
-Rookie Second Rounder
-Resigned Butler
-Resigned Rhino
-Resigned Blake
-DJ

That's my bench going into training camp. Now that I look at it out in space it doesn't look too formidable.

While I like Rhino, if we bring over Baby Snaq, he may be redundant. Butler and Blake likely are going to cost too much for us, especially Blake.

I agree about Rhino. I like the fact that he wants to be here since he's a local guy, but he wouldn't be needed if Sofo is brought over. The depth would be nice, but that's two players who would already be fighting for playing time behind the rest of the bigs. I really like Butler, so I would love to see him come back if at all possible. Blake is a great back-up to have, but he'll likely be heavily pursued on the market. There are a lot of better situations that he can find himself in and we'd have to give him a better deal to convince him to stay.

My question to you (Em1) is...if that is our bench, who is our starting SF? A salary cap of $56.1 leaves us with just over $18M under the cap. Butler, Blake & Rhino would probably add up to $9-11M or so.

First, if Sofo didn't have a stupid nickname (Baby Shaq), no one would give a damn. I have absolutely no idea why Clipper fans are so infatuated with a guy who has kept himself out the NBA because he can't push away from the table. Craig isn't just a big body, he actually produces. But most Clipper fans are always in love with potential instead of production and living in the now.

Second, your cap points are 100% accurate. I'd guess from my original bench I posted, I would probably drop Blake since someone will pay him. And that should leave us with enough to absorb Iggy's contract. Because I honestly don't feel that we are getting any real free agent in here.

In typical Clipper fashion it'll play out like this...

Management has this pipe dream we're getting Lebron or Wade...

When that doesn't happen they'll scramble to bring in a coach and/or overpay a Ray Allen or JJ.

I think our best option is to upgrade via trade(s) as there are many broke teams out there looking to get out from contracts.

My Reload plan

-Clippers resign Rasual Butler and bring in Big Sofo
-Draft trade down the 8th for Memphis 12th and 25th.
-Clippers draft Paul George (8), Lance Stephenson(25), and Alexy Shved(54)
-Clippers free agents sign Dorrel Wright, Al Harrington, Royal Ivey, and Tony Battie

As result-Clippers 2010

Baron Davis/Royal Ivey/Alexy Shved
Eric Gordon/Rasual/Butler/Lance Stephenson
Paul George/Dorrell Wright
Blake Griffin/Al Harrington/Tony Battie
Chris Kaman/DeAndre Jordan/Big Sofo

First off I would trade down the #8 pick to Memphis for their #12 and #28 picks.

I would pick Paul George or Gordon Hayward with #12 who ever is there, or Babbit, if the other two are gone, either one of these in this order would help. Then With the 28 pick I would use it to pick a PG like Vasques. Then with our 54 pick get a big man like Tim Ohlbreach. Thats three right there.

Then I would sign Shawn Livingston PG. I think he is really a guy for us to look at. I really liked Livingston, and felt terrible when he got hurt. Would love to see him back. And he would be cheap, compaired to Blake who will demand a lot of $$$. Resign Butler, Outlaw, and Novak. And Get Big Sofo, for good measure would round out our team, and we should be able to afford all these.

PG Davis/Livingston/Vasques
SG Gordon/Butler
SF Outlaw/George or Hayward/ Novak
PF Griffin/Jordan/Ohlbreach
C Kaman/Sofo

Maybe even sign another big for minimum, there always there.
