MIN-SAC .. need draft Guru's input

Post#1 » by shrink » Thu May 27, 2010 11:22 pm

MIN GIVES: #7 + #23

SAC GIVES: #5

What's the most likely draft order for MIN, GSW, and SAC?

My gut says SAC really only wanted Cousin, and probably isn't in love with Wesley Johnson any more than Aminu or even a big like Cole Aldrich or Udoh. On the other hand, we don't want to have GSW picking in front of us. It seems to me MIN gets value, and SAC gets something for nothing at this point.

However, I don't follow this area too closely, so I'd like to hear what you guys have to say? Does SAC have someone they want at #5?

If I had to pencil in a guy at 5 for Sac it would be Monroe.

OK, but whoever WE'D pick is unlikely to be the guy SAC eventually wants, right? Or not?

What about GSW at #6?

So you got Wall, Turner, Favors going 1-3. Minnesota goes Cousins, unless Kahn is crazy and overthinks this.

This is where it gets tricky, because it all depends on how they perceive the value. I have Johnson by himself at #5, with Henry and Davis a tier back. I think Johnson fills a need for them, mainly because I'm not drinking the Casspi kool-aid; but do they think the same way? Henry and Davis likely are there at #7 still, but Johnson certainly isn't, so that's the million-dollar question.

I think GS goes Johnson or Aminu, so the ball lands in Sacramento's court as far as if they like Johnson or if they believe in Casspi.

I think they'd do this trade; and then at #7 they could go Monroe or Aldrich - I would personally go Davis even though he doesn't really fill a big need for them, but I think they go Monroe or Aldrich based on all the rumors flying around about them at #5. Then at #23, you got other guys that can help fill their other needs.

So basically, I think they'd be unwise to do this and pass up Johnson (and then unwise again for doing what I'd guess they would and pass up Henry or Davis); but I don't hear a lot of love for Johnson in SAC from the media.

Minnesota wins big here. I'm assuming this is based off the Al for Prince and #7 that's the buzz of the rube world, so it'd be Al and #23 for Prince and Wesley Johnson. I can dig that.

If I follow --

Wall, Turner, Favors, Cousins, SAC - Monroe, GS - Johnson, MN - Screwed

so, we trade

Wall, Turner, Favors, Cousins, MN - Johnson, GS - Aminu, Sac - Monroe

That's the way I would see it.

+1.

I think GS likes Aminu because of his shaun marion-ness. Nellie would probably even be content rolling him out as a Center.

Yes please. Just get me Cousins and Wes Johnson and I'll be happy. Oh yeah, and George at 16 to complete the ultimate fantasy.

Gonna need a touch more depth at PF, unless your figuring Cuz to step into that rotation. Personally, I'd like to see the wolves with a solid true center in Cuz. Nothing against Milicic, but it would be nice to have a guy who can dominate in the post.

Trading Al would open the door for Pek to sign here.

Bingo with that first part. The problem from the Kings perspective (or at least from us fans) is that Johnson is pretty much projected as the PERFECT fit at SF with a player like Evans. He doesn't need the ball, he's a great outside shooter, he's athletic, he rebounds, & he plays defense--that fits perfectly with a ball dominant guard who can't hit the outside shot. But as has been mentioned already: the Kings are sitting on 2 developing wings in Casspi (who, if you ask me, is solely a 3) and Greene (who can play anything from 2-4 in the right lineup).

I also agree with Johnson @ #5 at this point. To me he's definitely the 5th best player on the board and, after him, it gets a bit murky.

That said, I think that Wolves fans should ask themselves: how much would it cost to trade out of the 2nd tier (Favors/Cousins) into the 3rd tier (Johnson) since that's what you're asking the Kings to do here. If the Kings held the #23 would you do #4 for #5 + #23? My guess is no.

BTW, it's been rumored for a while (since March actually) that Petrie doesn't like Monroe at all.

You're right. I think the gap between 4 and 5 is huge. I'm thinking the gap between 5 and 7 is [EDIT: NOT] that big for any team, but particularly if I'm in the Kings shoes with Casspi looking pretty good.

It really depends on what the Kings think of Casspi. There was a stretch last season where he was looking like he could be a decent starter. I'm still not completely sold on him, however. He does have potential (just like damn near every young player of course) but, to me, he's not a definite starter. I think Johnson projects to be so because of what he brings to the table.

I don't think I was too clear in my first post (after re-reading it especially) but basically my point is that the first 2 tiers of this draft are obvious (Turner/Wall, Cousins/Favors) and some (in this thread & on this board I'm sure) think that the third tier is comprised solely of Wes Johnson; then comes the 4th tier with the Aminus, Aldrichs, etc. My point was merely that the cost of trading OUT of a tier is higher than trading DOWN in a tier (at least for the most part). So while the difference between tier 2=>3 is larger than 3=>4, the fact still remains that a trade from 5 to 7 moves the Kings down an entire tier and thus should have a good deal of value (I'd argue more than the #23 alone).

Of course, all of this is highly dependent on who the Kings are targeting. At this point I don't have a clue who that is.

OK, I understand. Personally, I don't really see a seperate tier for #5, but there are far better draft minds on the board than me.

Its a perfect move for both sides. Wolves secure a guy who is an amazing fit, kings get #23 and still get the guy they want. Not to mention it allows us to start prince at the 3 for some veteran leadership and defense, and bring wes off the bench the first year.

I wouldnt want to do this deal until draft night however. I still believe all our assets should be kept available until we see for sure what it would take to get turner. I would also be on the phone with the nets trying to land #3. But if all else fails and we are resigned to drafting and keeping #4, then this is an excellent plan.

I would say use pek + 16 to move up to 10 and secure henry if this was to happen. Henry, johnson, and cousins would be a pretty sexy draft.

I think the difference in the tiers is small (between Johnson and the guys directly after him) but I still feel like Johnson is hands down the BPA at that point and in a group of his own value wise--whereas I'd lump guys like Udoh, Aldrich, Monroe, & Aminu into a tier by themselves.
