Here's something to keep you warm at night (or music to kill yourself by, however you want to look at it):

I used to go to the Pan Pan on 135th and Lenox, wearing a blue suit, just to order the hot chocolate. Unfortunately, none of the waitresses looked like Alicia.

Bah! Suicide is for losers! I'm going to medicate myself until I feel better.

I am...but what's that got to do with anything? It's Alicia Keys...I would drink her bath water. :(

I'm sure my fiancee feels the same way. Let me go ask her.

Well played, Rico....well played
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

I remember when Alicia Key's debut CD first came out, everybody I knew at the time would come up to me and ask me this question...

Have you bought the Alicia Keys CD yet?

Every single time I was approached with this question my reply was always the same...

"No thank you. I already bought all of Patrice Rushen's albums years ago. Why in the hell would I want to listen to a cheap ripoff of Patrice when I already own THE REAL THING?"

And then you told those kids to get off your lawn, right? ;)

I get it that both Keys and Rushen are great female singer/songwriter/pianists (you could also add Brenda Russell to that list), but I don't see much more similarity beyond that. Keys' vocals have more heft, for starters; Rushen's voice is pretty, but slight.

Don't get me wrong: I actually like Rushen quite a bit. But there's room in R&B for both of 'em.

The first time I heard Macy Gray, I thought she was riffing off/ripping off Esther Phillips. Ha! What a stretch.

Similarities in style and songs usually evidences awareness of and respect for a tradition, and people that largely reject tradition usually don't become very popular, no matter how talented they are. Keys is similar to some contemporaries and predecessors, and comparisons are inevitable, but she's not a clone.
