This is beyond awful. Give the man a perfect game and send Joyce to the minors.

88 pitches is crazy too. 83 if you count the fact that's all it took to get 27 outs.

Curious to see if MLB does anything about it. I'd say it's not likely, definitely a possibility, but I wouldn't count on it.

"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said. "I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."

"It was the biggest call of my career," said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.

Brutal call, but I appreciate owning up afterwards.

Yeah, and from what I read, he's considered a pretty good ump, so it's kinda sad that this will be his legacy from now on.

Hmm...so even the best umpires make terrible calls? Remind me again why using replay would be a bad thing?

the call has to stand unfortunately. Bad calls are part of the game and you cant go around making exceptions just because he has a perfect game going.

having said that, that REALLY sucks.

In hindsight, it is somewhat admirable that he didn't let the moment cloud his judgment. That said, man what an awful call at the worst possible time. Feel awful for Galarraga.

As a former umpire myself, I feel bad for Joyce. He knew he made a mistake almost immediately, and unfortunately, couldn't take it back. And even though he apologized, there's no real way to make it up to Galarraga. What a terrible and unfortunate way to end a game.

That was a travesty. Joyce even was about to get ready to have the punch out but suddenly in mid motion called it safe.

Probably the worst call in sports history. Something that has only been done 30 times and he ruined it. The call wasn't even close.

He was listening for the ball in the glove as they teach you and Galarraga didn't catch it clean in the back of the mitt. That was what did it.

that's what i presumed happened too. but someone in another thread said the umpire said he thought the runner beat the pitcher to bag. but maybe that's bad paraphrasing by him or me. i just can't believe the umpire thought the runner's foot got there first??
