Ok, so this is more out of left field, but I viewed it as an alternative to Jefferson for Price + #7.

*this is assuming a salary cap of 56.1M, therefore a max contract is 30% of that or 16.83M.

This plays to the fiscal side of the Memphis ownership. This saves Memphis almost 6 million in cap room in 2010. Combined with their current cap sapce they would have in the range of 15 Million of room. That should allow them to match reasonable (non max salary) offers for Rudy Gay and resign Ronnie Brewer without going into the luxury threshold. In addition, they get a similar offensive player to Randolph in Jefferson, but one that is signed long term. Jefferson combined with Thabeet and Gasol is a strong front court. they have also been on record as saying they are looking at PGs in the draft. Flynn is easily better than the draft PGs outside of Wall. And having a draft pick to sell for cash never hurt anyone (and Glen Taylor won't miss it).

Minnesota gets a massive expiring in Randolph like they would in Prince. However, they would only get the 12th Pick here instead of the 7th. In return they turn Flynn and the 23rd into O.J. Mayo. Someone who can obviously be a scorer, and who I think would pair nicely with Brewer. Given the improvement we saw in Brewer last year I would be excited to see the staff work with Mayo, and see if he can become more efficient.

This would be Minnesota's line up:

PG: Sessions (Rubio in 2011)
SG: Mayo
SF: Brewer, 12th Pick to be in rotation with Mayo and Brewer
PF: Love, Randolph, Pekovic?
C: Cousins, 16th Pick?, Milicic?

I like this team, especially when Randolph exipires.

So any thoughts? Is this much worse than the Jefferson for Prince + 7 deals? I personally feel we can get a similar player at 12 that we can at 7, and the positional fit and upgrade of Flynn to Mayo is enough for me to take the drop in 7 to 12. Who know's maybe Kahn could turn Randoplh around as a 1 year rental to a team with a short term low post need?

It makes some sense financially for Memphis, but I don't think they do it from a value stand point alone as whatever you think about Jefferson vs. Randolph, Mayo and #12 is worth a lot more than Flynn and #23.

No way they even consider Mayo and 12 for Jefferson if they have Randolph on the team, IMO

what if we combine them and do Jefferson for Prince/#7, then turn around and trade Flynn/7 for Mayo, and then we can also offer to take Conley for a future 2nd or something (I'm assuming they don't want to pay 5 million for Conley and moving him would help free up money for Re-signing Rudy Gay)

McHale liked Mayo well enough to draft him in front of Love.

The deal was done because the total trade was very valuable. MIN traded Mayo and got Love, but also Mike Miller (that led to Rubio), plus an additional $7.6 mil in 2010 cap space.

I was convinced during the draft that the wolves couldn't pass on Mayo, but I had to do a lot of convincing when I mentioned to some other posters that this was too rich an offer to decline. The only way MIN could lose this deal was if Mayo became a superstar, and right now he's a logn way from that .. I wouldn't even say he's a better player than just Love.

Yeah, I thought about that. Maybe it was for the best, but let's not forget that Rubio still isn't wearing the uniform. I agree though that Love + Rubio > Mayo.

I don't think the wolves are in a position to say the trade worked out well for them. It hasn't worked out to well for the Memphis yet either.
