Trade Idea: New Orleans-Minnesota

Post#1 » by shangrila » Fri Jun 4, 2010 11:01 pm

New Orleans gets:
Ryan Gomes
Ryan Hollins
16

Minnesota gets:
Morris Peterson
11

Reason - New Orleans cuts immediate salary while only moving down a few spots in the draft, allowing them to not worry about the luxury tax and Minnesota moves up to get their guy (I'm assuming it's George) while taking on a veteran with experience.

I could see the Hornets wanting to get rid of Posey instead of Peterson here, but I thought that might be a little much from our end.

It's the right idea. Shrink will come in and say Mo Pete + 11 for raw cap space alone is a great deal for New Orleans. For us, it likely guarantees one of the wings we covet -- Henry or George -- and for me that's worth it, so even this trade I would be happy with. My only worry is Mo Pete isn't exactly the right vet (based on his reputation) that I want guiding our pups. If something like this went down I'd hope to just buy him out or waive him.

I like it. We move up in the draft, we get an expiring, we dump Gomes and Hollins. Free Agent class of 2011 is where I see the Wolves being most active.

With the exception of signing our own players -- Darko, Pek -- I'm all for rolling over our capspace next year into the new CBA. A deal like this to take on an expiring contract seems like the smartest thing to do at this point. We'll have so many new pieces by the end of the summer that we should figure how they all fit together before we decide where to spend our cap flexibility.

That's a nice deal. Gets you up into the possible starter area of the draft.

I think it is a great deal. What do other GSW posters think of it?

is there any way we could kick this up a notch and get Peja instead of MoPete? He's also an expiring and is a better outside shooter, even if he only plays 60 games a year.

Bad idea. Peja has a bad back, cannot stay in front of mule, and makes a lot of money making it so we cannot sign anyone else after Darko.

honestly, who are we expecting to sign? I'm a firm believer that last year and this year are just a holding patern till we can bring Rube over and build the team around him. I don't think Kahn does anything but sign bit role players to fill holes and see what sticks.

Peja can do what we thought Mike Miller was going to do, hit open jumpers. Yeah his back sucks and he's going to only play 60 games at the most, but we're still rolling our capspace over and for 10min a games he can man the turnstyle into the lane and hit some 3's which is way more than Sasha brought last year.

I think we can get a lot more value out of renting out the rest of our cap space than this.

ESPECIALLY, if we're taking on Peja. Look what Houston got for Jared Jeffries. Peja makes 13.4 million next year. That pretty much means say good bye to either Pekovic or Darko. Also means we can't sign anyone other than minimum free agents to round out our roster.

I didn't mention this but in my head I had this deal going down on draft day, which meant Gomes straight up isn't enough to cover Peterson's salary. I guess it could happen after the draft but I kind of figured the Hornets could use another body down low anyway, even if Hollins isn't anything special.

Don't see NO taking on Hollins 2nd year salary, but
Gomes/Hollins/16 for Peterson/11 makes some sense, and knocks 3 mil off our 2011 cap for 3 mil in 2010 cap room.

I've been pimping Gomes/Ellington for Peterson/11 since the end of the season.
If we could get them to pick for us and just do gomes for mo pete/11 on july 8th that would be even better.

I don't think NO are going to part with the #11 without getting the #16 back in such a deal.

Am I the only one who thinks NO would be better off dealing Peterson at the deadline and keeping that pick?
