Wrong!

LeBron has an option. With an extension, he can be given ETO for the 2nd year of option (technically the 3rd year, as the option would be picked up). He would be 27 at that time. All-the-while, his salary continues to increase at the maximum rate, which no other team can offer because they can only sign him to 105% of last season's salary, and the ETO option isn't there for another team, because he wouldn't have re-acquired Bird-rights.

Another misnomer: You all seem to think that he will always sign 3-year deals. This is based off of a single contract extension that he signed, so that he'd have a ton of options at a young age. If he hadn't signed a 3-yr deal (w/option) then he'd have been 27, going on 28 when he became a free-agent, and a new CBA would already be in-place, so it would have minimized his options. At age 34 he will have been in the NBA for 16 seasons, going into his 17th. He would garner the most money from the Cavs, if he were to stay in Cleveland, as I suspect he will.

LeBron signs a 4 year deal regardless of where he goes. He will be 29 when that deal expires, in his prime, and also will have been in the league for 11 seasons which means he can get a maxed out max contract. After that 6 year deal, LeBron will be 35, and will probably garner another large deal.

You ignore Lebron's potential non-basketball related income in your monetary reasons.

You ignore Lebron's desire to win multiple championships.

I am one who desparately hopes that Cleveland can retain Lebron. I hate to see a small market team bullied. But, I think your analysis is one sided and neglects pertinent considerations.

You think that he hasn't thought about how he could sell a percentage to LeBron? Casinos bring top talents to perform... and they make TONS of money. LeBron wants to be a billionaire. A part owner of a casino or two would certainly put him well on his way...long before he ever turned 30.
I'm too lazy to look up the CBA and point out specific excerpts, but there is no way this would be legal under the CBA.

But Jazzfan is right. Some people (cough Knick fans cough) overestimate what he'd earn in non-bb related ventures, but it's hard not to believe he'd be able to off-set the extra money he'd get in a contract with Cleveland.

If he went to NY (or Chi or Mia or wherever) and didn't win a ring, it wouldn't change his salary/endorsements at all. He'd obviously make more if he does win one (or multiple), but he certainly won't lose money if he doesn't win any.

Ultimately I think it boils down to whether or not we can bring in another star. LeBron really seems to want to play with one - not that I blame him - and IMO it is the absolute key to re-signing him. If we can't acquire one, I wouldn't really blame him if he left. I'd certainly be disappointed with how he went out, but this team as-is doesn't have much of a future and adding another aging band-aid won't change that.

Well, you should have looked that up before, because James can't sign a 5yr max extension this summer, but only a 4yr max extension. The salary for the first year of that extension is restricted to the same rules as if he would sign a new contract in that year. With the upcoming new CBA in 2011 we don't even know how that will look like. There is already a debate that this could mean the max extension would be effected already by the new CBA with possible lower amount of maximum salary. There is a risk that signing that max extension now would mean less money later. Also one of the reasons Nowitzki opts out of his contract.

Lets see how the calculations works now. Assuming there are no changes which would effect James' extension, we can most likely agree that the salary cap will not be set to $63.7m or above, because that means the 105% of his salary (those $17.1m) will be higher than the 30% of the salary cap (in that case the 48.04% of the BRI cap, NOT the 51%!). His contract extension would start with $18m and he would get $83.3m over those 4 years. That means he would get $100.5m for 5 years (including his 17.1m in 2010/11). Compare that to the $96.3m he can get from another team with capspace. $4.2m difference, not that much.
It is also a fact that after 3yrs a contract can be extented. James can get his 6th year from that capspace team via that extension. That would give him at least $23m more and overall $119.3m over 6 years. Extended that contract with the Cavs after signing that 4yr extension now would give him $24.9m or overall $125.3m for 6 years. That makes a difference of $6m in 6 years. Well, one million less per year. I guess James can make up for that in New York, Chicago or LA, because all 3 markets are bigger and the Knicks, Bulls and the Lakers are more popular around the world than the Cavs.

The biggest paycheck for 6 years he can get is a new 6yr max contract from the Cavs, that would give him $125.7m. That is $6.4m more than he could get by signing with a new team and getting that extension after 3 years. I don't think that this kind of difference will be the decision maker for him.

Has anyone considered that LeBron may have peaked? Not everyone's career has the same trajectory. This may be as good as he is going to be.

That is highly unlikely though. LeBron has no post game, and is a mediocre shooter on the rise. With LeBron's supposed work ethic, those or two facets of his game that he should be able to improve upon.

I'm not really concerned about his post game or shooting as I am about his decision making. He needs to stop with the random heat checks and bad passes in traffic.. He also needs to know when to attack and when to take over when the team needs him to. In a couple years, there is no doubt he will make vast improvements to his game.. After all, LeBron is only 25 years old.

And except for former forward Bob Love who was washing dishes in Seattle before the Bulls got him some help with a speech therapist so that he could become a Bulls ambassador.

agreed but that "unfinished business" billboard in chicago is lame and doesn't make any sense...nowhere near as bad as what ny has been doing, though.

in the Larry King interview Lebron said

1. Cleveland has an edge [in retaining me]
2. I want to win

I.E, "If the mngt can get another star (commitment to winning part) I'm staying"

As I mentioned in another thread, Joe Johnson is there for the taking. If mngt doesn't screw it up, LeBron will be in Cleveland next year and the team will be very good

Implications of Rumored Miami Giveaway

Post#153 » by Mezotarkus » Fri Jun 4, 2010 10:32 am

Rumors that Miami offered Beasley for essentially nothing (Dooling's contract with a team option for 2010-2011) makes me think the Heat know something or think they know something. It makes no sense for them to give Beasley away unless they think they have a real chance to resign Wade and land James + Bosh/Amare/Nowitzki. Moving Beasley's salary off the books would allow them to resign Wade and offer two max or near max contracts if they released everyone else not under contract. I would be concerned.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks he's going to re-up with the Cavs, and here's why:

It seems that Lebron values fame and wealth over winning. I know that makes it look like he'll sign with the Knicks, but there's another component.

In sports, fame and wealth are by products of winning, and to a smaller extent loyalty. Lebron probably knows that the chances of him winning a ring any time soon in NY are slim even if they get Bosh. He needs to capitalize on all the attention being placed on him now and win a ring as soon as next season and his best chance is with Cleveland.

So why didn't he just win this year? Maybe he and the Cavs really weren't good enough, but here's my conspiracy theory: He lost on purpose.

Wait a moment... am I contradicting myself? I said earlier that winning leads to more fame, and with Lebron's emphasis on fame, wouldn't he want to win this year? Maybe Lebron and "his team" planned on losing all along so that he would have an expectation that he would go on his free agency tour. Lebron is going to go to at least four different major cities this summer and sell alot of merchandise related to the hope that he may sign with another team. If he went on such a tour after winning the championship this year, people would question his loyalty (more than they do now). The free agency tour is something his "team" has been planning for a long time and I expect it to be the craziest summer marketing tour in the history of the NBA.

When all is said an done, Lebron will return to Cleveland and sign a new contract. He'll expect to be praised for his loyalty in the face of alluring temptations to sign elsewhere. Then he'll do his best to win a championship (and no mysterious injuries) with the Cavs and begin to build up his reputation as a winner.

So that's my theory. I know it's crazy, but it's fun to come up with this stuff. If this summer turns into an all out Lebron marketing blitz and he resigns with the Cavs in the end and wins a championship next season, then maybe my theory will actually have merit. I don't think my theory will make fans of any team particularly happy, and maybe that makes it credible.

No, It is not true.

Nike has made a public statement that there will be NO free-agent shoes being made.

Those of you that watch BW's twitter already know this.

No, you are wrong. To the casual eye, it appears LeBron could only sign a 4yr max extension. This appears this way because of the option year, which you assume would be year-1 (5yr max on all extensions, minus any years left in current contract), thus allowing LeBron to sign an extension of only 4 years max; which would begin in 2011-2012 season.

However, this is not correct. An option year is exactly what is says...an option. It does not become part of the contract until it is signed. Also, LeBron needs not sign that option year in order to qualify for an extension. By quickly looking at LeBron's contract, you probably thought that he needed that 4th year to even qualify ( to qualify for an extension, the contract must be for 4 years or more). However, once again, this is wrong. LeBron never signed a 3 year contract... he signed a 3 year extension in 06, to his rookie 4 year contract. According to the CBA (Which you can download in-full from the player's association site), he is still playing under this contract, as he never became a free-agent, and the original contract was extended... meaning he is currently playing on a 7 year contract, that has a 8th year option (4 year rookie contract + 3 year extension + option). Also, the Cavaliers and LeBron can mutually agree to terminate the option on his contract. If he were to sign the option...then you would be correct, that he could only sign a 4yr max extension...which would start in 11-12. However, by terminating the option, the Cavaliers and LeBron can sign an extension anytime up to Oct 31st... The only requirement is that the extension cannot be signed until 3 years (exact) has passed since the extension was signed. At that time, up to 10/31, the Cavs may sign LeBron to a 5 year max extension (assuming the Option is terminated). The extension would begin for this next season, and the first year's salary would be 110.5% of last season's salary. Also, because the extension begins before the new CBA, it is unaffected.

Dirk was brought up as an example...on why he didn't sign an extension. Dirk's situation was totally different. Dirk had an ETO. An ETO year IS part of the current contract, and must be honored before any extension can begin. Therefore, Dirk would have been in the exact situation you described, only he wouldn't know if his raises would be as high or much of anything else, because the New CBA would be in-effect when his extension started. LeBron didn't have an ETO; he has an option year, and like I said earlier, it is not part of the contract until/unless signed. LeBron signed his extension 4 years ago. So he can sign an extension at any time, for up to five years, and all of the years of the extension would fall under the current CBA, as directed by NBA rules and union agreements.

No, you are wrong. A contract can only be extended to a max of 5 yrs, that "option year" is part of the contract. Because if he doesn't opt in, the contract is off and can't be extended anyway.

It was discussed here. So stop trying to claim you know anything about that.

heathmalc wrote:The extension would begin for this next season, and the first year's salary would be 110.5% of last season's salary.

No, it wouldn't. An extension is handled as if a player would sign a new contract in that specific season. Thus his extension can be effected by the new CBA, because there is NO way to extend that contract further and get the $17.1m next season.

A lot of blabla by someone who was just told that his idea is complete bs. The most money James can make is a NEW 6 yr max contract signed with the Cavs. All other possibilities are giving him less money.
