Cavs offer Tom Izzo coaching Job.

Post#1 » by heathmalc » Mon Jun 7, 2010 2:12 am

By Bob Finnan

The Cavaliers have offered their coaching vacancy to Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, according to a source.

The Cavaliers want to make a big splash with their next coaching hire.

According to a league source, they are centering their efforts on bringing in Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.

In fact, they've already made him an offer to be their coach, the source said. It's going to take a lot of money to convince Izzo to leave the confines of the college ranks.

UPDATE: Fox 43 is reporting that Izzo has accepted Cavaliers coaching job.

Keep this in mind before reacting: 43 is a rumor buzz-a-ramma They once reported that Shaq was being signed by the Pistons (2008). So until it is independently confirmed, I wouldn't take their word for it.

Well, if he's hired... let's hope he is the exception to the rule. :)

I realize that I haven't lived in Cleveland for some time but WUAB is 43, Fox used to be 19 don't know what it is now. Eh, I'm just confused.

If Gilbert really is spending the money its gonna take to hire Izzo then he must be certain that LeBron is coming back.

Didn't know there was a channel "43" in Cleveland. Fox 43 is out of Michigan or something...at least I think it is; I think it's Detroit's affiliate... not 100% on that, but they always seem to talk about the pistons whenever I have seen them (while surfing the net channels). Toth isn't exactly reliable though... so dunno if something is done or not (ESPN hasn't said anything yet).

I agree. But then again, I have been convinced that he was staying from the start.

It is being reported on Freep as well (Detroit Free Press online) but they are using the same report. There is nothing on MLive as let regarding this.

Espn says that it is being reported that he's been offered the job.

The Cavaliers did not confirm or deny the report, declining comment Sunday night.

Attempts to reach Izzo on Sunday night were unsuccessful.

According to what the article says, it appears unlikely that Izzo would accept the position with the Cavs, as he recently told ESPN in an interview that he wanted to stay with the Spartans until he won at-least one more championship. He did follow that up with, "But I'll never say 'never'."

At any rate, it appears like someone jumped the gun again...not surprising, considering the stakes this summer.

Doesn't seem like the Cavs offered anything yet, just seems like they are taking a run at him. Who knows though, there will be more information out tomorrow, and hopefully Windhorst will confirm whether it is true or not.

I don't think there is any question in Izzo's coaching ability. My concern is the power structure of the Cavs. Team discipline has played a huge role in Izzo's success as Michigan St. His system could certainly work, but I question whether the organization will allow him to enforce his brand of basketball. He needs to be able to against all players, including LeBron James if he stays. The problem with the Cavs organization has been that LeBron has influenced too many decisions. He could take a lesson from Kobe Bryant and let the professionals in the front office do their job.

Tom Izzo is an excellent college coach but he is a screamer and get in your face'r. Does anyone really think that method of coaching and motivation is going to work AT ALL at the NBA level when the people the coach is yelling at make two to four times MORE money than he does? I don't. It'll be an abysmal failure. I hope Gilbert doesn't f*** this up and hire Izzo.

I am guessing that you have no clue as to who Stan Van Gundy is.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

There have been tons of screamer/disciplinarian coaches. They tend to work best when they are following a very permissive coach like Brown and vice versa.

Chuck Daly was a screamer and look what he did with the pistons.

Whoa, great move by Cleveland, clearly Gilbert will get his man is Lebron wants him or not. Gutsy move by Gilbert, I respect him a lot more because of it.
