Nick Castellanos, HS

6'4'', 210 R/R, 3/4/92

Summary: With an athletic frame that looks like it has room for some added strength, Castellanos has become one of the more talked about high school bats in the class. Whether he's worthy of that kind of high consideration remains to be seen, but he does swing a pretty good bat and shows decent raw power. The question is if he'll be able to translate that to in-game pop down the line. That becomes more important considering that most feel he'll move to third base at the next level, where run production is often a requirement. The team that feels he will indeed reach that potential is likely to take him off the board early on.

Young guy, like the pick. We need a 3b for Brandon when he is gone. Should need some time, but thats cool

Chance Ruffin, Texas

6'1'', 185, R/R, 8/13/1988

Summary: He's started and he's relieved for Texas and it seems like the latter is the better role for Ruffin. His stuff won't blow you away outside of a pretty live fastball, but he's got the right mentality and makeup to make his stuff play up. He's also got Major League bloodlines as the son of former big leaguer Bruce Ruffin, and that invariably helps, as does pitching in big spots over the course of his college career. He may not close at the next level, but he could be a setup type who moves quickly through a system.

A relief pitcher that will be in the bigs after a year i think. Seems like a nice 7th inning guy for the future, or maybe a set up man. A future Ruffin/Perry backend?

From the Comp picks, not a huge Ruffin fan. I would have prefered a little more upside and maybe another bat...we dont exactly have a plethora of minor league hitters. Castellanos is a great pick though! I read he was first round material, but could be tough to sign (which has never scared us). He will take a while, but this should be our third bagger of the future right here. Great pick

Hopefully tomorrow we grab some more position players. Just about anything will do. I would love some guys who could hit for a high average

The quick synopsis for Smyly

Brett Eibner gets most of the pub for arms coming from Arkansas, but Smyly's a viable prospect in his own right. The lefty has a four-pitch mix with a fastball he can run up to 93 mph, an average curve (74-76 mph), a cutter he throws 84-86 mph that grades out as average and a 78-80 mph changeup. He's the type who could fit nicely at the back end of the rotation or as a quality lefty specialist on a big league staff.

As for day 2, i was hoping for some position players, but as always we just stock up on pitching. Nice to get another catcher in the system, and to throw in some Lefties though

The tiger ended up with 3 catchers in draft which is what they need .they are thin at that position.

Brantly was taken with the fourth pick (third round) out of the University of California-Riverside. And scouts like everything about him: superb defense and arm; and a quality short-stroke hitting assembly, with an excellent eye, that should give him a plus on-base percentage with ability to drive a ball into the gaps. His size is fine: 6-2, 200.


Bryan Holaday, a 5-11, 190-pound right-handed hitter from Texas Christian. Baseball America said this about Holaday:
"His improved offense and usual fine defense will make him one of the better signs in the draft,

Leyland is 6-2, 200, with upside, which is why the Tigers intend to talk an 18-year-old out of a Maryland scholarship Leyland can be persuaded to forgo.

Castellanos was a BRILLANT pick. He's a big upside player that our organization can really use.

We seriously lack alot of positional players with upside in our farm system. Inge/Gullen won't be around forever. I don't think we have a long term answer at SS. Even if Avila does well at C, we'll still need another.

We have a ton of bats, but no positional guys.

Patrick Leyland must have really impressed some people because teams don't usually waste early rounds (1-10) on family ties, unless they actually think they can contribute and make the team eventually.
