He will sacrifice his college legend for 30 mil in order to be fired in 3 years. Afterward, he can come back to Michigan State to make 2 mil/year.

LBJ does not give a damn about a college bum like Izzo. Let's not overspeculate things here. I see this as a desperate move by Gilbert in hope of keeping LBJ. No coach in the NBA and college rank will command respect from LBJ with the exception of Doc River, Phil Jackson, Popovich, and maybe Thibodeau.

Give me a college coach that has made a successful transition to the NBA.

As far as history, it is a fat 0% for the past 20-30 years. The college game and NBA are completely different animals.

If I am a betting man, I would bet that an NBA assistant having a higher chance of a successful transition to NBA head coach than a highly ranked college coach. The percentage for college bums has been a fat 0%. Meanwhile, you have guys like Pop, River, Phil Jackson, Riley, etc... emerging from the NBA stage as assistants.

So what does it mean that Izzo is kind of leaving them dangling here apparently. If we look at his comments, that is....about how he doesnt want to leave MSU til he wins

This is just incredibly interesting to me. B&B today (actually with Holmes) painted a picture of Dan Gilbert trying to be like Jerry Jones. A big spending owner who controls the team and wants to shock and awe with a big coach signing. They may be looking to impress Lebron with a big name coach.

Has Lebron handpicked anyone? Maybe he suggest Thibo, maybe not. But he sure doesnt seem to have handpicked Izzo. Izzo seems like Gilbert's guy, has the MSU connection.....

And of course there's the Phil angle. It seems like waiting for Phil is not an option for Clev. Apparently PJax is simply not going to be in Clev, or he's been silent as to his motives.

Phil Jackson is not leaving LA for Cleveland. Let's be realistic here.

Beside LA, Phil Jackson is either going to retire, or go to Chi/NYC.

I'm going to relax about Izzo.
If I'm Lebron, I'm looking at how the competition stacks up next season. Miami will have loaded up on talent, Then there is Orlando, and then Boston who could be the NBA champ. The Bulls will be better with or without Lebron. All those teams (other than maybe the Bulls) will be legitimate threats more than ever to Cleveland. If the Cavs don't improve the roster, then Lebron should leave. He really has to leave if he doesn't want a replay of the last 2 years. A new coach isn't going to change those realities, it has to be the talent on the court. I wouldn't be that concerned unless Phil Jackson, coach K or Larry Brown becomes coach of the Cavs. Those 3 guys are the only ones that *might* get Lebron's attention.

You called him a college legend and an overrated bum (twice) in the same post.

College legend to regular basketball fans out there.

Overrated bum to knowledgeable fans. We all know that most of the successful coaches in the college rank are overrated. Coach K from Duke would fail miserably in the NBA. That is why he is scared to make the transition to the NBA.

Again, you guys have not answered my question. Give me one name in the past 20 years who has made a successful transition from the NCAA to NBA.

Yeah, and he would bring up his man crush for Luol Deng, and how he would not trade Luol Deng for Carmelo Anthony. We have heard that before. But, let's hear his response and yours.

Here is the latest on Izzo's decision...

# PDcavsinsider

All could be contingency planning, though. I'm sure MSU is preparing action plan if he leaves. Just as Cavs working on other options. 20 minutes ago via web

# Brian Windhorst PDcavsinsider

Monday people were telling me Izzo would stay. Now there are rumors he's attempting to find jobs for his assistants if he leaves. 22 minutes ago via web

# Brian Windhorst PDcavsinsider

Tom Izzo had a meeting with his players yesterday. MSU AD said today he thinks a decision comes before July 1.

Heathcote: Izzo needs LeBron to commit to Cavs
June 9, 2010 1:21 PM | 1 Comment
The Detroit News reports: Former Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote spoke to Tom Izzo for 30 minutes and confirmed that his former pupil is intrigued by the idea of coaching LeBron James with the NBA's Cavaliers.

"I honestly think he'll look at this," Heathcote said. "But unless he can get some commitment from LeBron James, the job isn't that good. I think a lot hinges on what (Izzo) feels about LeBron's future. I think he's seriously considering it. He's going to look at it like he does on all things but he's got an awfully good situation at Michigan State, too."

PDcavsinsider

There is a feeling at MSU that a decision could come soon because of the stress this is causing. But lots of conjecture both ways

WojYahooNBA

The Cavs and close friends of Tom Izzo are waiting for him to inform them of a decision on leaving MSU for Cleveland. Still nothing.

KBerg_CBS

A person involved in negotiations tells me Izzo hasn't accepted yet: "That is not true." Process still unfolding

PDcavsinsider

Opinions, speculation, rumors flying at moment. But no one I talk to believes Izzo has made a decision yet.

WojYahooNBA

One associate described Izzo as "torn" as late as last night, but didn't get sense he'd settled on all questions he still had on the leap.

You'd think, with all the money involved, if he felt there were a really strong chance of LBJ staying, that he would've taken the job yesterday.

So maybe this has been addressed earlier or perhaps we don't know the answer but...

I'll ask anyway.

Is there anything stopping Izzo from calling LeBron and asking him if he will re-up?

Nope but you have to imagine there has been some sort of conversation. Which makes me skeptical as to why Izzo hasn't accepted. Like another poster said, if it was known Lebron would reup, he would've accepted by now.
