Tom Izzo Informs Michigan State Players He Plans To Take Cavaliers Head Coaching

Sources close to WFNY have informed us that Tom Izzo has told his players at Michigan State that he plans on taking the Cavaliers job. Our sources have heard directly from players on the MSU team that Izzo informed them this week that he is planning on making the move up to the NBA level under the ownership of MSU grad Dan Gilbert. We have also heard from a separate source that Izzo is holding off on announcing this until the end of the week, when his kids finish up school in the Lansing area. While Izzo could always change his mind, we are comfortable reporting that he has in fact informed his players at Michigan State that he will be taking the Cavaliers job.

Still going to wait for official confirmation....but step 1 for retaining LeBron seems complete.

Now we just need to make a big splash with a blockbuster trade 8-)

I'm ecstatic (if) Izzo accepted the job.

In my book Gilbert is the best owner in all of sports so I can see why Izzo would accept.

The exciting thing to me about Izzo possibly accepting is that I don't think he would if he didn't think LeBron was going to resign.

This is the only source reporting this, and according to news radio in Detroit (WWJ), he never mentioned leaving in his last meeting with the players.

So I don't buy this yet. It's still premature speculation.

Not that it necessarily means anything, but per the Detroit News:

East Lansing -- Keith Appling, an incoming Michigan State recruit, seems satisfied Tom Izzo will stay despite rumors Izzo's been offered the head coaching job for the Cavaliers.

"(The rumors) don't scare me," he said. "I pretty much know he isn't going. It's just another rumor."

Though Appling said he hasn't spoken directly to Izzo, he's received assurances from the coaching staff that Izzo isn't leaving.

NBA is better than the NCAA but why the hell would Izzo accept CLE of all places? if james doesnt come back that team might have to fight for a playoff spot.

I doubt he is leaving

Its all about LeBron which is why Izzo would accept Cleveland. Gilbert is looking to make a huge splash with Izzo, and might just pull it off.
Izzo's style fits the NBA as well; grind it out offense and solid rebounding/FT shooting.

MSU Players Believe Izzo Will Leave For Cavs

Jun 09, 2010 7:56 PM EST

On Tuesday night, Tom Izzo called a meeting to let his players know that he had, in fact, been offered the head coaching job in Cleveland.

Though he did not notify them of any decision, Michigan State players left that meeting believing that Izzo was going to leave to accept the Cavs' position.

Everyone is saying that he hasn't actually said "I am leaving MSU for Cleveland," however, most of his players are saying that they are convinced that associate HC Montgomery will be leading the team this year.

WFNY, which originally broke the story (perhaps prematurely), did however mention that Izzo wouldn't announce that he had taken the job until Friday. They have not wavered on their earlier report, and have adamantly defended it against posters who have berated them with "fraud-like" posts, insisting that Izzo wasn't leaving MSU. Not surprisingly, most of these posters are students at MSU.

In other news:

ESPN has reported (and confirmed through multiple sources) that Byron Scott will be interviewed for the head coach position by the end of the weekend. It is widely believed that the job is Izzo's if he wants it, but that Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert will not wait past Saturday for an answer, as he wants to announce a new head coach no later than Tuesday.

I want to qualify this statement. None of the players have actually said to anyone that they think he's leaving. Delvon Roe's father did. This story kind of takes the situation out of context a bit.

Actually, this may or may not be true. According to multiple outlets, various players have stated that Izzo has told them that he will not be back. The question is if all of these outlets received their information from the same source. If that is true, then it could be anything from a publicity stunt, to an out-and-out lie. We have another "source" that says that Izzo never said anything to the team. The question is who you want to believe.

The facts that we know (or 99.9% sure) are true is that Dan Gilbert has made an offer to Izzo. We do not know if it was formal or not, as again, various outlets have released conflicting information. We also know that Dan Gilbert wants a coach hired, and in-place before the draft. We also can conclude that Tom Izzo is at-least interested in the Cavaliers' head-coaching job, as he didn't turn it down like he did Chicago 2 weeks ago... and they are "supposed" to have a better line-up, and more stability than the Cavaliers. If this was a question of Izzo only wanting to coach a team with a lot of potential, then he wouldn't have turned down Chicago so quickly, as they have Rose, Noah, a good bench, and a lot of money to spend on a top free-agent.

If you look at these facts, and look at how he (Izzo) turned Chicago down so quickly, and completely ignored the Nets, then you can conclude that their is another reason for Izzo's interest in the Cavs' job. That interest is likely LeBron James. It has been rumored (through multiple sources) that LeBron has basically agreed to sign a 3-year extension with the Cavs. You may or may not believe this, or you may just be waiting for verification from someone like Windhorst, or LeBron himself. Regardless if you believe it to be true or not, one thing remains: Izzo didn't say "no" to Gilbert & the Cavs. You cannot say that he is just giving Dan Gilbert respect because he is an MSU alumni, because Dan contacted Izzo about the HC job back in 2005, but Izzo told him he wasn't interested.

So why the change? Not because of the roster w/o LeBron...because it isn't that appealing. Not because Dan Gilbert is rich and would spend whatever it takes to win, because there is a salary cap that restricts Dan from throwing his money around; and "buying" a championship. These assumptions/facts lead us to conclude that there must be some truth in the LeBron rumor. A player that Izzo really likes. Yet, ironically, Izzo said "no thanks" to Chicago, who supposedly is one of the front-runners for LeBron's services.

The thing about rumors, regardless of who releases them, it is always necessary to read between the lines. Take information that you already know to be true, then add the rumor to it, then conclude the most likely outcome.

The most likely outcome appears to be LeBron re-signing, and Izzo becoming the next head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. This outcome is based solely on facts that we have learned, and rumors we have heard.

Now, we await verification of our conclusions.

^ You need to work on your formal logic if you find that to be the most likely conclusion due to the reasons you listed.

First off, "multiple sources" of player comments don't really mean anything. Those same "sources" cite Keith Appling (one of MSU's top recruits) and the whole coaching staff believing that Izzo will stay. The only person affiliated with the players to speak to the media was Delvon Roe's father, who offered his opinion that Izzo was likely to leave. He speaks for himself, not the players.

Izzo did the same thing with Atlanta in 2000, and didn't take the job. Granted, this is potentially a much, much better gig, but it hinges on a huge "if". I don't think Izzo will have sufficient information as to whether or not LeBron will definitely be back before taking the job. The fact that Byron Scott is also seriously in the running tells me that Gilbert wants to name a head coach soon, and will not wait on an assurance that, quite frankly, LeBron is unlikely to give before he has his grand tour starting July 1st. Izzo hasn't said no, that's true, but he also hasn't said yes.

Reports of him leaning one way or another don't mean much, as they're just wishy-washy speculation. It seems to me that Gilbert is really putting pressure on him to accept the job quickly, while MSU's AD has said he won't rush Izzo in the process. To me,that means Izzo's decision could very well drag on, at which point, Byron Scott (the clear plan B) would likely be offered the job.

So while it is true that Izzo has enough interest to strongly consider the position, to take anything more from that is really premature at this point.

If Tom Izzo accepts the Cavs Head Coaching position, he will be a success. He is that good.

Lebron needs to understand that Izzo is a true professional, an outstanding coach in all aspects, and not being in the NBA is overrated. A long time ago, nearly all coaches came from college to the NBA. These ex-NBA players turned coaches with no coaching experience on any level have been the DISASTERS. You can count the exceptions on one hand.
