This has more to do with the 30+ million than it has to do with Lebron. Can you honestly see Lebron going to management saying "I want Tom Izzo" he's a college coach with NO NBA coaching experience. How many college coaches have been successful at the NBA level? I can't name one. I'm not giving up hopes at all for Lebron if Izzo signs.

I could see him wanting (or at the very least, OKing) Tom Izzo... what I couldn't see is him leaning toward leaving Cleveland and then deciding to stay based on Tom Izzo coming.

Yeah, I mean I don't think signing Izzo affects Lebron decision one way or the other. It's not going to make him want to leave more and it's not going to keep him in Cleveland either.

would izzo continue to put lebron in a position to stat pad and take horrible shots?

i wouldve preferred izzo over thibo, but he reminds a bit of rick pitino.

I acknowledged that he likely would not get another deal with that much guaranteed money (btw, wasn't Larry Brown's deal with the Knicks 4/30 guaranteed?). But define "like that"--I think the guy could get a 4/20 or 5/25 deal virtually every year. Ask an MSU fan about how much his name comes up when there's a NBA vacancy. It's an annual rite of passage.

I just think there's a massive disconnect here. A, he already makes a freaking boatload of money. B. The guy's entire shtick is build on winning. He's not dumb, he knows that he's going to lose more in the NBA, but to take over a team in the dead of nuclear winter? I said before that I'm fully aware he's not going to take over the Lakers if Phil retires, but don't you think he wants to go to a team where there's at least some friggin hope?

The money is great but if he goes to a poor team wins 15 games a season and is a flop, what's next? Yes he can get a good gig at college again, but is it the MSU job? Also he'll be known as yet another college coach that couldn't make it in the NBA.

Except there still is a CHANCE LeBron will be back. A pretty good one at that. All we're arguing is that it doesn't take assurances to get him to take double the salary and still a very significant chance that he'll be coaching LeBron James.

Also, as to this part...

If it was just about the money, he would of accepted the job day one. IMO it's more than just about the money

If he had information that LeBron were staying, he probably would've accepted the job on day one. If he has to think about it, it's more likely that it's the money that's swaying him... just my speculative opinion.

The Bulls apparently made this "power move" only after they were turned down by Izzo, mind you.

Did we ever actually locate the Detroit news article that references this? Because the one I saw bandied about on this board didn’t mention the Bulls.

Does Izzo strike you as the kind of guy who would risk having his entire legacy tarnished by a disastrous Tim Floyd-like stint in the pros?

I don’t know, but if you believe 1. That there is actually a report from some Detroit newspaper that Izzo turned down the Bulls and 2. That it is true, why do you then disbelieve the reports that state that the offer is completely independent from Lebron and comes with no guarantee that he’ll return?

Well that could be because Izzo has become so emotionally invested in Michigain State over the years. He's been the head coach there for quite some time and has had alot of success. For some guys, you don't want to leave something like that.

Here's the article:

http://detnews.com/article/20100609/SPO ... out-of-MSU

When there is a report that has the chairman of the board of trustees of MSU or some other similarly authoritative person say for sure that the offer isn't formally or informally linked to LeBron's staying in Cleveland, I will stop disbelieving.

MSU is nothing without Izzo. Even if he doesn't do well in the NBA, he could always find a hungry program looking for an established coach. If anything, having coached in the NBA boosts his profile. Its a win-win for him.

Failing in the NBA didn't exactly ruin the reputations of Pitino and Calipari (or even Floyd, really) in NCAA circles.

I dont know what the heck to make out of all this, but would most people be in agreement that LBJ is kind of being put in a situation where he has to choose between playing for Izzo or playing with Rose?

That is, if you take all the other free agents out of the equation for a sec(and all the double-max teams like NY NJ and MIA(kind of))

So long as Lebron had no say so in this deal, the Izzo signing could actually be really beneficial to the Bulls.

It signals, perhaps, that Gilbert won't blow up the team and start all over if Lebron leaves. And that means if Lebron does end up switching teams, the Cavs ought to be much more amenable to a sign and trade bringing salaries back than they otherwise would be.

Best case scenario for the Bulls? Getting lebron, and sending the Cavs back a package based around Kirk, with maybe James Johnson and a future pick thrown in. Izzo gets a defensive guard and playmaker back, along with a power 3 who excels at fouling LeBron. Bulls free up Hinrich's salary slot for a complementary, 2 or big, or a chance to better fill out the roster.

Does anyone here think Izzo wouldn't have taken the BOATLOAD of cash and the guarantee of coaching LeBron James already (hell, yesterday!) if it were on the table?

Exactly. If LeBron doesn't stay, Izzo can always say he lost games bc he didn't have any talent. If LeBron stays, then he can become immortal.

Only downside is more pressure, but I assume he can handle that given he'd be making more money.

Um, if the Cavs are ready for a sign and trade, that's bad news for us. For one, there are teams out there that could offer a better deal than we could and second, I have a hard time believing Cleveland wanting to trade within the division.

Ahh, cool. I hadn’t seen the correct link.

When there is a report that has the chairman of the board of trustees of MSU or some other similarly authoritative person say for sure that the offer isn't formally or informally linked to LeBron's staying in Cleveland, I will stop disbelieving.

How about Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cavs?

“The concept that LeBron James has been involved in any way, shape or form with firing our head coach, involved in the transition to general manager Chris Grant and will be involved in future coaching decisions and hires is 100 percent and patently false,’’ Gilbert said.

LeBron would be choosing where he goes. If they want to get something back, and he wants to come here, they'd have no choice but to trade him to us.

That said, it would present more competition because more teams would be able to bid for his services.

Once again, I agree with you. If Izzo takes their offer, it's an advantageous movie for the Cavs in their hunt to get Lebron back. It's no sign it's a done deal.

If you believe that the Cavs aren't giving Bron thumbs up / thumbs down on the coaching hire, then you have nothing to fear. We would be a lock to sign him.

I think that statement was made to remove James's fingerprints from the sword driven through the GM's and coach's back.

It would be an "after the fact" sign-and-trade with Cleveland, not a place your bids scenario like Toronto. Essentially, Lebron agrees to come to us; because we have max space, we can just sign him, outright. That remains the most likely scenario.

But if Izzo is signed onto the Cavs, one would think Gilbert would be more likely to listen when we say "Oh, and if you want something back in the deal, we'd be willing to give you JJ and Kirk, plus some picks and cash for the trouble." Izzo's not going to care about saving face, he's going to want the most talent on his roster to work with, and might push to take Kirk back. He only has a two year deal, unlike Deng's 4, and would replace some of LBJs playmaking. Better that from Izzo's end, I'd imagine, than nothing, not even a TPE.

You can’t arbitrarily believe one report when it suits an anti-Bulls agenda and disbelieve another when it doesn’t.

What happened to Calipari? They finally let that go?
