Re: Retro Player of the Year Project
Yeah, I definitely like July. I carelessly said a random year; doing it in October seems pointless. We may as well wait until 1947 if we're going to do that.
I'm on board with some time in July.

Re: Retro Player of the Year Project
Wow Malone is going to beat Barkley by a crazy margin. Right now it's 4.07 to .668 and that gap could grow. Shows how important consistency, health and longevity is in this project.

Should do it well before July 1. I don't know if Free Agency will have any impact on this or not, but it'll be a frenzied time and no1 will be thinking of the Finals by then.

I'd rather do it at the end of the project, recency bias and all.

A week-long thread to coincide with the 4th of July weekend would probably be best.

Re: Retro Player of the Year Project
fyi, as I mentioned I'd do earlier, I've now updated the voting panel list removing people who are no longer active.
So everyone has the right expectations: You shouldn't feel like you're going to get kicked out if you miss a vote, but if you're going to have an extended absence, talk to me ahead of time. I'm not kicking people out to scare others into activity, but I also don't want a scenario where people only seem to be voting when one of their favorites is in contention.

Wrote this in the 1990-1991 thread.
Karl Malone seems to be getting more respect than I would have imagined. Most seem to say Barkley was better in his prime when the two played, but Malone essentially has finished ahead of him literally every year except 1993.

Malone's done better than I thought he would either. However, I say as a Barkley fan I don't think Barkley's really gotten shafted here. If anything it's the format itself that's the root of the problem (if there is a problem). Barkley's got quite a few seasons where he misses significant time in the '90s. That's rough when evaluating players one season at a time.
I do expect Barkley will shine in the next few seasons though.

Doc, I've been really busy lately. Haven't voted in the last couple of years, will try to keep up, but can't promise anything at least for the next week or two.

Okay.
For future reference for everyone, I'd prefer to get PMs.

The problem Barkley's going to run into is that the people in front of him now (Malone, Drexler) are getting replaced by better people (Magic, Bird). I can see legitimate arguments for a 5th place spot or off the list entirely a few times coming up.

Doc -- I updated the panel on dolem.com and removed the inactive voters that you sent.
Also, we still need the "official" team affiliations for the following for the sake of completeness (optional, of course):
- ElGee
- JordansBulls
- Shawngoat23
- TMACFORMVP
- the_rock220
- CellarDoor
- kaima

Will be interesting to see what happens. You can make the case that the competition was harder in these upcoming years, but at the same time, these are the years where Barkley consistently thrived in MVP voting, and the time where he was truly putting up numbers that look like misprints.

Magic was there in 91 so that isn't any change. Bird's last great season was 88, he didn't play in 89 and in 90 he really wasn't Larry Bird anymore. So I really don't think competition will be a big factor for Chuck in the next two years.

Can we use the same team or must I pick any remaining team?
Also how does it work with the players?

Your favorite team, other people's preference has no bearing.

Favorite teams: Detroit from 1990-91, Chicago from 1991-98... hey, don't call me a bandwagoner, I moved!
Haven't really had one since then. I guess affiliate me with the Trailblazers if I had to pick one right now?
