Any interest in Lou Williams?

Post#1 » by Foshan » Thu Jun 10, 2010 9:55 am

Philly fan here, with us landing turner, we are running out of minutes, and I love LWill and would love to see him get into a situation where he could get 30min a game. He's an explosive combo guard, he played the point very well for us at the beginning of last season, before breaking his jaw. He can get to the basket against anyone in the league and finishes well with contact. Is a streaky outside shooter, when he's on watch out! When he's off (watchout!) he needs to be reminded to take it to the basket. He has the speed to be a good defender, and has shown great effort but its inconsistent. I could see him as a starter on a good team, or as an explosive 6th man on a contender.

Philly would be like expirings/cap space + 2nd rate prospects (late 1sts/early 2nds?)

Any interest?

the only problem is we are so small in the front court already. OJ and Conley are both "undersized" in the league and so is Lou Williams. What do we need another combo guard for?

But that's a problem that has to get addressed with or without Lou Williams. If we bring him in we are likely upgrading our talent level but he certainly isn't any better than Conley or Mayo.

Williams would have to come in a larger package with either the #2 pick in this draft or one of your rising stars like Thaddeus Young or a blockbuster with Iguodala

I've said before I like Lou Williams as a player. But his contract isn't on the cheap side.

I've mentioned some of these players before but I'll add a few more just to be complete. Steve Blake, CJ Watson, Will Bynum, Earl Watson, Anthony Carter, Luke Ridnour, Ray Felton, Carlos Arroyo, Shaun Livingston, Javaris Crittenton, Mike James, Larry Hughes, plus Keyon Dooling(if the Nets don't pick up his option).

There isn't a shortage in veteran backup pointguards available this summer, and almost every one of these should cost less than Lou Williams( 3 years remaining at an average of $6mil per season). In an offseason where money will be tight for Memphis if they retain Rudy Gay, there would need to be much more coming from Philly. Plus Memphis doesn't have a contract that matches going back the other way.

It's weird but in some way it might have made sense to keep Jaric rather than waive him since the Grizzlies are on the hook for his salary next season but can't trade him.

Yeah, Philly is one of the teams in which I could possibly forsee a trade....

Scratch that, just took a look at the dollars for the players I had in mind and NO THANKS!

the buy out of Jaric was probably done under the guidance of under ground Serbian mafia hitmen tracking Heisley's family and threats, extortion.

I don't see this draft as that valuable. Lou averaged 14/4/2 boards. But that's after head games with EFJ and constantly putting him at SG, PG for a streach and back on the bench. So forth and on. Lou had an absolutely terrific season and should command this kind of value. 12th overall pick. Is there ANYONE in this draft, that'll be as good/better then Lou Williams?

Why would the Grizzlies pay 5 million for a backup PG? Might as well look for one in the draft, or in free agency, at a much cheaper price. Might not be as good as Lou, but there have been PG prospects in previous years who were relatively unknown but still did well in the NBA and will not cost nearly as much.

The Grizzlies should just keep the 12th overall. Lou on his own, combined with that contract, isn't worth a late lotto pick.
