Q's on European Basketball

With all the complaining about ref's with regard to NBA games, I was wondering if the Euro League(s) is any better? Do stars get vast preferential treatment? Or does the home team get favored over the road team?

I haven't watched much European basketball outside of the Olympics and a streamed game here and there, but I find the European style of play (Not flopping, which even our own guys here in the U.S. such as Pierce and Fisher have become great it...but shooting)/fundamentals to be entertaining...just hoping to learn more about it.

* I may be getting my terms wrong, I don't know what to even call it. European League? FIBA?

less star treatment mostly because there's less individual game and more of a team game.

refs are chosen from different countries and they do their jobs solidly. i've really never had any problem watching the refereeing, but when your team is losing you always have something to bitch about.

that's just me..

Each country in Europe has its own domestic league(s) just like the USA has the NBA. Spain has the ACB, Greece has the A1 Ethniki, and ect.....

But the best teams from all over Europe play in the Euroleague.

Is it just me, or is Euroleague called a lot looser? From what I have seen, it is fairly physical basketball and the refs let them play.

There are always complaints about the refs in Europe, endless complaints. But that is just what fans do. The truth is the refs in Europe IMO are far better than the NBA refs. There is no such thing as "star treatment". They don't manufacture stars by giving them special treatment.

The game is much more physical and they do not call ticky tack and touch fouls. Players are allowed to play much more physical. But yes, there is endless complaining about the refs in Europe. Honestly, I think European fans complain more about the refs than NBA fans do.

I am from the U.S. Sometimes Euroleague games show up on NBA TV and sometimes they are on ESPN360. Not a huge sample size, but a decent amount of games. I am sure there some packages you could buy though.

Yes, and in addition to espn360.com or espn3.com which shows I think 2 Euroleague games a week online, there are also a lot of other sites where you can watch European games from the Euroleague, Eurocup and big domestic leagues online.

and websites like interbasket.net and talkbasket.net provide game links on their web forums in the live game threads.

Some of the domestic leagues also provide games online like for Greek League ellinaras.tv and for Spanish League acb.com

Then of course there is euroleague.net where you can watch all Euroleague games, but you have to pay for that one.

Thanks! That's a huge help, I've bookmarked the links. Nothing on the upcoming ESPN schedule(s) but it looks like the season is over (End of September - May?)

Euroleague season is September (qualifying rounds)/October (start of regular season) to May.

The big domestic leagues like Spain and Greece run from October to June. Right now the Spanish League Finals are ongoing. You can watch replays of the Spanish playoff games here:

Just checked out the Regal FC Barcelona vs. Caja Laboral/Unijca games. Ricky Rubio impressed me. I was skeptical about him, but he looked very good.

Thanks for the links. I really enjoy the European style of play..look forward to checking out some more games.

refs are similar qualitys...difrence is in rules and level of couruption

no star tretment as there are almost no stars in europe...bigest stars are clubs and coaches...there is alot club treatment, big and rich, especially in domestic leagues

in europe there are much tallk about refs, mostley because fans are more loyal and because tv broadcaster shows much more replays of doubtfull calls unlike nba where smartley stern manipulited fans focus.

in eorope there are much more personall intrests in basketball, evryone who is inside knows it. much higher level of couruption
in nba refs are less bribed, but have worse rules like hand check, travelling and derective from stern to protect stars

The refs from both the NBA and the big European leagues are both equally corrupt. Neither one is any less guilty of corruption than the other.

Good point about the club treatment. Some NBA rules really bother me but other than that I think NBA refs are the superior referees. The amount of consistency those guys have is amazing, NBA games are called the same way every night, some of those calls make fans bitch and whine but the same calls are made every night. Where as in europe even in the Euroleague level you'll never now how exactly the game is being called, I think individual refs are consistent but different refs have very different styles. Also I'd suspect that the more intense crowds plays a part here too.

Also NBA refs seem to be able to add new concepts and focal points more quickly, almost instantly, Every time there's a change in here it takes the refs half a season to get on track. That just shows you that higher resources generally means better results.

NBA fans who complain about the overall state of the officiating in the NBA really have no concept of officiating basketball and how it works. Of course there's always room for improvement but NBA is nowhere near a crisis when it comes to officiating, and even the problems the fans have have more to do with rules than refs. But generally I'd say refs are more respected in the states.

I won't touch that corruption thing other than saying that I doubtanything that goes on in some of those domestic leagues would suprise me.
