Summer School: Derrick Brown

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Thu Jun 10, 2010 4:36 pm

We can create a thread for each player to discuss the things you would like to see the player work on over the summer and bring to the team next season. This isn't about their contract status or a bashing thread or love fest thread or a trade thread or a player comparison thread. Just a thread of improvement ideas.

Didn't really get a good enough read on UPS as his PT really dropped off as the season went on.

He's a little skinny for my liking and needs to get into the gym over the summer and seriously pump some weights. I'd like to see him shoot coming off a screen better and with all that athletic ability work on some shot blocking.

Tape of guys to study: Tayshaun Prince (for his ability to round the corner, catch and shoot) and Shaun Marion (from his PHX days for his ability to get off the gound quickly and use his length to block shots)

What would you guys say?

I don't like the Prince suggestion. I think he's far more offensively polished than UPS will ever be. Derrick has some range and may develop a consistent jumper, but he's not a guy who's going to be a perimeter threat.

He needs to be Gerald Wallace's disciple. Have Crash just take him around, teach him the work ethic and determination it takes to improve every year and whenever Crash is ready to retire (as a Bobcat), he can pass the reigns on to him.

Crash is such an abnormality in this sport though that it's hard to say to someone "model your game after him" because what he does and how he does it is so unique to him.

Plus I doubt UPS will ever rebound at the rate of Crash or block shots the way Crash does.

I think UPS is a better one on one defender though.

ups needs to focus on being that high energy, defense, attacking the rim, 3pt shooter type that you find in hybrid forwards. so i think he should really work on that corner 3.

He's got to work on his ball handling. From what I've seen of him (not much, no one has a lot of him either way), he's wild with the ball. He's never going to be able to play 4 in the NBA, those days are over. He's going to have to bulk up and learn how to work off the dribble to get his points. As he is right, the second he puts the ball down a smart defender will just get in chest and take the ball away.

I REALLY hate to use McGrady as a comparison, but I think thats who he needs to model his offensive game after. He'll never be the natural shooter that tmac was, but he can emulate how he moves with the ball and without it. They've got the same lanky frame and athleticism, but one knows how to work with the ball in his hands at every position and one doesn't.

When he puts on weight after a couple of years, he'll have some facets of his PF game brought back. In the meantime though, he can grow his game as a slasher and be that much greater of a player once he combines both.

I'd like to see him bulk up and model himself after David West. West looked similar to him coming out of college, although a bit thicker.
