Alex Rios has a market? wow
Apprently on the realgm front page for MLB it says Alex Rios dosent want to be traded, now im just assuming this is because Chicago "wants", to trade him and in that case, he must have some teams interested. Jays tried their best to dump him for nothing, now Sox might get something out of it.
dont get me wrong, i was all for losing his contract..... plus the JAYS have replaced him very well. im not gonna complain, this is just something i read, no complain. JP Ricciardi was a genious for losing Rios.
nevertheless, Rios has a no trade clause this season, and then a partial no trade clause from there on, meaning he can only be traded to certain teams......... he apparently will exercise that right to stay in Chicago, so he isent going anywhere
he's put up decent numbers lately............. Does Alex Rios have a market now?

Re: Alex Rios has a market? wow
He probably does have a market, because he's hitting .317/.374/.583 and has a pretty good shot at making the All-Star Team.
And it wasn't Ricciardi who made the call...it was our ownership. They had the final yea/nay vote in determining whether we shed his contract for nothing.

Rios has been the best CF in baseball this season by far, when you account for his defense. Of course he has a market.

Re: Alex Rios has a market? wow
I think "if", Chicago finds him a contender looking for a "startering", centre fielder or right fielder he would accept the trade....... i think he is just afraid of being traded to a worse situtation like a team set in the outfield or a even worse losing team.
Put Alex Rios on a high impact offence with protection, like the Yankees, or even Boston or somewhere else and he could make Jays fans very bitter. I think he can finally live up to his draft expectations on a team like the Yankees...... to be honest he'd be their best outfielder
well, we arent complaining cause Jose Bautista is taring it up in RF, but if he wasent, jays fans would be regretting this

I think that many of us were regretting it from the moment it happened. I don't know Rogers' budget well enough to know whether some moves (giving cash in the Halladay deal, the Hech signing, the incoming Adonis) might not have happened had we held on to his salary, but if those things were independent, it was always a mistake to give him away for free.

You forgot to mention that he is killing it on D this year too, as he almost always does. If he keeps both up (which I don't really expect with the bat), he is on pace for a 10 WAR season. So yeah, there is probably a market for him.

This is why you don't give up assets for free. Imagine where this team would be with him and Halladay right now.

Alex Rios was a very frustrating player to watch..... i knew he had tons of potential but as a JAY, in his later years, all he did was strike out. It was so frustrating, but u always knew he was young and had all the other tools developed (fielding/speed). His power was still developing but he was so unpatient. it was strikeout after strikeout
now, though, looks like he just needed some time more to develop as a player.
i repeat, Yankees should be all over this. He'd be their best outfielder and with their batting protection, he could go to the next level

Rios didn't strike out that much more than your average hitter these days...once out of every six plate appearances, which is hardly uncommon. That's why many of us were frustrated; he was actually a very productive player from 2006-2008, hitting .296/.347/.489 for a 118 OPS+, and good defense (most of the time).

Re: Alex Rios has a market? wow
Haha, sometimes JP is a genius for dumping the contract, sometimes he's an idiot for losing him. The truth is, like Schad said, it wasn't his call at all. Ownership wanted a straight dump and didn't even want a return even though they could've got one. It's safe to assume that a GM who signs a player to a big (yet fair) contract wouldn't want to dump him after a year and half, and definitely not for nothing.
Anyway, he's a great fielder and always was. It's debatable whether he would've turned it around at the plate in Toronto or if he just needed a change of scenery, but I hated losing him and still do.

He wasn't a cancer, he was just lazy. Needed a fiery manager.
His last 3 years in Toronto he had OPS of 865, 852, 798. He also had tons of speed on the base path and off course the D.
To dump him for no return sucked big time. I was not aware that it was the Jays management decision, and frankly that's absolute BS. You hire the best GM you can, and you let him go to work - you do not bud in and force him to sign Wells to a 20mil/year deal and then release a younger, better CF making half the money.
Ugh, and people wonder about attendance issues? This is some Pitt Pirates **** right there.

I just never liked his batting stance, the way he'd nudge his head. Good riddance.

Well, the assumption has been that they lost confidence in JP, and thus were hesitant to pony up above-slot cash for his picks as well, knowing that he wouldn't be around shortly thereafter. The proof'll come in a couple months...Rogers deserves quite a bit of credit for shelling out for Hech (and potentially The Venezuelan Adonis), but we also drafted a couple kiddies who won't be dangerously cheap.

i like the team now without rios. if hill and lind picks it up, this is a very good offensive team with above-average defense

Re: Alex Rios has a market? wow
At the time, with the way he was underperforming, I was definitely in favour of ditching Rios and his contract. And then when he batted around .180 to finish the season in Chicago, it was all the more sweeter.
His problem has been laziness. He did everything so nonchalantly it pissed a lot of people off. And he seemed to act very entitled. And now he plays hard and tries hard and look what happens, All-Star year. I think you have to give Ozzie a lot of credit for his turnaround, especially on the basepaths.
One of Rios' major problems has been putting a full year together, though. We have seem him have All-Star years the first half and tail off badly afterward. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues.

Re: Alex Rios has a market? wow
he's now hitting .322, with 13 homers and 31 RBI's
Add in 19 stolen base's.
What a horrid move to just get rid of him for nothing, even if we shedded some of his salary. Could have just held onto him and waited until he started to play better and then trade him for something.

Another big game by Rios today. 4 for 4 with a HR.
