Possible off-season scenarios

Post#1 » by danu786 » Sun Jun 13, 2010 8:22 pm

Although I, along with countless other Kings fans, hope we could get a big name free agent like LeBron or Wade, it seems very unlikely any of them would come to Sacramento over other destinations. However, there are a number of free agents out there that could come here and, along with our two draft picks, we could head into next season looking quite different. Here are some possible scenarios:

1. Draft Demarcus Cousins and Jordan Crawford. Sign Rudy Gay. Head into next season with a possible lineup of Udrih, Evans, Gay, Landry, Cousins with Crawford, JT, Spencer, Omri, and Donte being signifcant off-the-bench contributors (if we end up keeping Spencer, that is.)

2. Draft Wesley Johnson and Jerome Jordan. Sign David Lee (the only big name that I myself have heard as a possibilty). Lineup: Udrih, Evans, Johnson, Landry, Lee. Later on, if we need a bigger lineup, we can move Lee to PF, Landry to 6th man and Jordan or Hawes at center. Small lineup but may work.

3. Draft Greg Monroe and Jordan Crawford. Sign Matt Barnes or Kyle Korver. Lineup: Udrih, Evans, Casspi, Landry, Monroe. This allows Casspi to develop more while still having a veteran small forward off the bench, depending on if you want Barnes' aggression or Korver's shooting.

Just some thoughts that I had in hopes of getting the Kings closer to a playoff spot. Any thoughts on any of these, or any scenarios of your own?

I really hope the Kings just stick with Landry. He's in a contract year and that could be super beneficial for the Kings in more ways than one. If he blows up you either look to re-sign him or trade him at the deadline because his value will be through the roof. If Westphal treats him as a legit number two option, like he should be since he's easily one of the better efficient iso scorers at any position in the league, than I think he gets up past that 20 ppg mark.

First one is my favorite.

Yeah I really hope Landry has a great year since at this point he, along with Tyreke, is one of the cornerstones of the franchise.

That one is my favorite too haha. Imagine if Crawford is as good as he was in college. Tyreke, Crawford, Gay, Landry, and Cousins is simply scary.

I think #1 is the most realistic, but I don't see us throwing money at any of the "A" or "B" free agents (Gay being the "B"). Just draft Cousins, get Crawford or another PG/SG with the 33rd pick, add a small vet or two (Morrow? Barnes? J.J. Redick?) and go from there.

Beno/#33
Evans/Garcia
Greene/Casspi
Landry/JT
Cousins/Hawes

Wow I really like the idea of Anthony Morrow. I feel he is a perfect complement to Tyreke in the backcourt and, yes, it's very likely the Kings go for more role players in free agency. I am a big Anthony Morrow fan and he would be a better fit than Gay, as then Omri and Donte would get more playing time and continue to develop. Now, if we get Cousins and Crawford as well, we seem to be solid at all positions, and from there it depends on how well the guys play together.

Tyreke/Beno/Garcia
Morrow/Crawford/Garcia
Omri/Donte/Garcia
Landry/JT/Brockman
Cousins/Hawes/Brockman

This team looks like it could do damage this season, and it looks really fun to watch, with Tyreke the main ball handler and point, Morrow and Omri/Donte on the wing, Landry and Cousins in the post. Man I'm excited for this offseason :D

I'm not a big fan of either #1 or #2 because I don't like the idea of targeting Rudy Gay or David Lee.

Rudy Gay plays Sacramento's deepest position, and I have enough faith in Casspi
Lee, I'm betting is going to be drastically overpaid for what he brings and will likely want to sign with one of the teams that will be signing a big name like Miami or New Jersey.

Yeah, I agree... If we could pull that off I'd be very.. very.. very Happy!!
But unfortunately, I don't see us getting a guy like Rudy Gay. :-?

This is the best scenario I think out of all of them. I think Morrow is a MUCH better fit than Gay, plus we will retain cap space. I am really hopeing we get Crawford at 33. I think he has 6th man of the year potential ala Jamal Crawford. Very similar player. I think if we come out like this next year I will be happy. Then go after a big name in 2011.

Morrow is an RFA and GSW is pretty set on keeping him. The Arenas rule also kicks in,MLE is the most he can be offered.

Crawford is trash and Gay is a horrible fit next to Evans while lee would be a waste of money.

I would suggest:

4. Trade #5 Overall for Darren Collison + #11 Overall. Draft Haasasan Whiteside if available.

Collison
Evans
Garcia / Nocionci
Laundry / Thompson
Whiteside / Hawes

Sac is not going to be contending for the title next year, so might as well build around a core. Evans is a great young player that is clearly the Alpha dog. Collison would be an ideal point guard next to him. Take a chance by drafting a center with upside by taking Whiteside.

I think most Kings fans would love to do this trade, but I just don't see the Hornets doing it.

By the way, it would be...
