Either I forgot about it, or just never realized it....

I know it may seem a little premature, but how are people feeling about the timescales? I don't want the game to drag on for too long.

Here's what I proposed in the initial topic:

Judging

1. Trading will close at 7pm EST, July 12th.
2. Writeups must be submitted by 19th July, 7pm EST

Judging Criteria will be as follows:

1. Best team for win now. These will be ranked by Conference, with the 2011 NBA Champions being the team that scores the highest points.
2. Best team for the future. These will be ranked across the whole league; expensive contracts and excessive spending will be punished in this category.

I am also planning on writeups for Conference Finals and NBA Finals - e.g. top 2 ranked teams in each conference will do writeups against each other as to why they think the would beat the other team... and then the same again for the Finals. IMO it would make the end of the game more meaningful.

I'd also like to suggest a 3rd ranking - a simple "Did the GM do a good job?". The answer to which is either yes or no - rather than a 1-30 ranking, and will be presented back as "70% of GM's thought you did a good job; 30% thought you did a bad job"

I suggest this because there are some teams that historically do well in these games purely because of the assets available to them - and others that have an almost impossible task. This is designed purely to give GM's recognition for doing a good job in bad circumstances, or vice versa.

All feedback is welcome :)

I'd rather end it sooner. How bout ending it around draft night, or maybe that weekend?

1. I think we should end earlier. Once rosters are set, I don't think there will be many more moves to make, except for the "I'm bored and want to make a trade" variety.
2. I like the idea of adding the "good job?" ranking.
3. From past experience, I think that ranking teams from 1-30 (or even 1-15 within a conference) does not work well. People aren't good at making fine distinctions, so if you have three or four teams you think did about the same, choosing which to put first and which to put fourth is arbitrary. I'd suggest we use a scale intead - for example, for the "win later" category, as a result of the GM's actions, I think that:

the team is much more likely to be a contender in 2011-12 and after - plus 2 points
somewhat more likely - plus 1 point
about as likely - 0 points
somwhat less likely - minus 1 point
much less likely - minus 2 points

This both keeps the focus on the real question (not "is this a good team"? but "did this GM make the team better?") and gives people a more grounded and less arbitrary way to score.

waiting till mid July will kill the game. No reason why the season can not end by the end of the month and votes should be in before 4th of July weekend (IMO)

2011 Second Round pick via Los Angeles Clippers
2011 Second Round pick via Los Angeles Lakers
2012 Second Round pick via Los Angeles Lakers
2013 Second Round pick via Los Angeles Lakers
2013 Second Round Pick

Are on the table. I'm looking to buy into the 2011 first round.

Ok, I'm thinking the following:

Trading will cease at midnight EST, 24th June

Writeups due by midnight EST, 28th June

Rankings due by midnight EST, 2nd July

I will then have the rankings added up by 4th July, and the Conference Finals and then Finals writeups will take place the week commencing 5th July.

How does that sound?

Everyone will be submitting rankings (we are splitting it by conference, so West rank the East and vice versa); although you are welcome to submit rankings to me too - the more the merrier :D

Ahh, if you're going with the vote for yourselves thing, I'll abstain. Last I'd paid attention you were rolling with a panel.

I think submitting votes will not work as it did not work well in the past (correct me if I am wrong). I would rather prefer a independent panel.

We can do that if people prefer? Let me know.

And would you want that for both categories? (win now & win future)

I still think GM's need to vote on the 'Did the GM do a good job' question...

If gms are going to be voting, they should have to put a reason next to every ranking.

Eg.

Team Name Rank 12th for GM doing a good job.
This team was spending 55 million a year and now they are spending 80 million a year, the team has always been cap conscious. While the team is decent and better than before, its still not championship caliber and they are spending way too much money,
