Re: Pekovic trade rumor
I don't know about rebounds, but assists are harder to get. If the guy you pass to puts the ball on the floor, you lose the assist, one dribble and its gone. Seems kind of mean...

Re: Pekovic trade rumor
That rumor was competely unfounded. Apparently this "Ming" is a greek homer who goes by spanoulis666 on some euro bball board.

Ioannis Bourousis is the best center in Europe.

The closest one to Bourousis is Ante Tomic.

Pekovic does not need to use Rockets as a tool to get more money in Europe. That’s just NBA fan arrogance talking. I assure you that Pekovic could get more money in Europe than the NBA would pay him if no NBA team would ever touch him with a 100 foot pole.
Players make much, much, much more in Europe than NBA fans realize. They don’t need the NBA to bring up their pay as in fact the NBA is less than they make in Europe.

Has anyone else heard this news? The above links aren't very credible as they are that Spanoulis666 character.

Also, I don't know how solid of a source it is, but...
Here is another source citing Houston as a possible suitor for Pekovic:
http://www.as.com/baloncesto/articulo/n ... sbal_1/Tes
It isn’t in English, but translated it says this about Houston:
“The player has one year left on his contract with Panathinaikos and from the other side of the Atlantic, the Houston Rockets, considering the physical problems of Yao, filter a possible bid closer to five million per season, numbers that do appear sufficient to lead the player to the American adventure.”
I'm speculating this "ming" who started this rumor read it in a european newspaper but was too lazy to provide the source.

It seems like everyone on these boards approaches Euro players with a "basketball is basketball, stats are stats" perspective. If I was a Euro expert I could break it down for you, but I'm not, so I won't pretend to be. Here's one that should be very obvious to everyone though:
Euroleague game length - 40 minutes
NBA game length - 48 minutes
This one difference means that there are nearly 20% more points, assists, rebounds, etc. in the NBA simply because the game is longer,and this is just one (fairly obvious) difference. People really need to understand that it's apples-to-oranges, not apples-to-apples.
True. But 3.5 rebounds in 22 mpg is still only 5.7 rebounds per36. I think it probably has more to do with differences in how things are scored.
This isn't what I was trying to say at all. I wasn't saying he had low rebounds because he played fewer minutes. I was trying to say that Euroleague is a different game.
This is imperfect, but it might be the best way to consider Pek since we can't take off our NBA goggles. I dug up Hollinger's Euro to NBA formula, applied it to Pek, and projected 36 min averages.
Hollinger's formula wrote:• their scoring rate to decrease by 25 percent;
• their rebound rate to increase by 18 percent (there are more missed shots to grab over here);
• their assist rate to increase by 31 percent (their scorers are stingy on assists);
• their shooting percentage to drop by 12 percent; and
• overall, their PER drops by 30 percent
Using this, Pek's projected NBA stats per 36 are:
PPG 19.4 RBG 6.8 APG 1.1 FG% 48.7 FT% 72.7 BPG 0.7 SPG 1.0

The game in Europe is considerably more physical than the game in the NBA. Refs allow a lot more contact and physicality. The lane is wider and you have to stay out further from the basket. Boxing out is pure wrestling and they don't hardly calls those as fouls.
Euroleague is at least as physical as 90s NBA and Greek League is more physical than that was. Also, there are less shots and less possessions, considerably much less than in the NBA. The pace of play is greatly slowed, particularly the Greek League is one of the slowest leagues in Europe in terms of possessions and shots and is the slowest among the top level leagues. The Euroleague is played at a faster pace than the Greek League, but is still slower than a league like the Spanish League. Compared to the NBA the game pace in the Euroleague is very slow.

18 percent increase in rebounding seems very conservative by Hollinger. Luis Scola for example has had a way bigger increase than that. The 31 percent increase in assists seems terribly low of an estimate.
Jose Calderon averaged 2-3 assists per game in the Euroleague. 4-5 assists per game in Euroleague is Chris Paul, Steve Nash type numbers. Hollinger's estimates seem to be extremely conservative to me.

It's not only that. You only get an assist if the play leads directly to a score from a spoon fed pass. If the player catching the ball does not catch and immediately shoot (without making any moves, head fakes, pumps, etc) then it is not an assist.
Even probably about half of the Stockton to Malone, Nash to Amare pick and roll type of assists would not be counted in Europe.

I did a Google search in English for Spanoulis666 and cannot find anything to show this poster exists. There comes up a few results and there seems to be nothing there when you click on them. What language is this supposed to be in?

That claims Pekovic has until July 15th to pay a €1 million euro buyout to Panathinaikos and go to Minnesota. Otherwise he would remain in Panathinaikos.

IMHO Llull is better than both Rubio and Pekovic. But the truth is he is not a PG. I would consider making a trade of Llull and Pekovic if I was the Wolves. But considering centers are usually more valuable than shooting guards I think I would rather have Pekovic.
You sound like you have a really high IQ (maybe even approaching 200). We better listen to you.

If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Try looking for Vasileios Spanoulis 666.
