Re: Conference shuffling?
As I understood it, the biggest problem with the Big 12 was that some schools thought Texas was taking advantage of the others. This new deal looks like it will just make Texas even more powerful in the conference, and eventually leading to a repeat and teams wanting out again.
I think the 5 team package that the Pac-10 was offering to accept was about the best deal possible for those schools, and if Utah takes the 12th spot now, I don't see any conference that will be able to make that kind of offer again. If the Big 12 finds itself in more trouble down the road, they'll be lucky to get 4 of the teams into the same conference. They better hope this works, but I think it's just a delay.

Meh. The Pac will be fine with Utah and a new TV deal in a couple years. Sure they could have gained more, but it's not like they're worse off than before.

Re: Conference shuffling?
The Pac 10 recently signed a TV deal so don't expect one for a long time. They won't make near the money (even with their own network) that the SEC and Big 10 make because they're limited to a much smaller fan base. I agree though that the addition of Colorado and Utah doesn't hurt but they're not the big things that was hoped.
Texas is creating their own network and keeping all the money. Don't expect them to leave for another conference anytime soon. They must ecstatic, more money and stay in a conference where they can continue to dominate.
The Big 12 and Big 10, one with 10 teams the other with 12

When was this? Everything I've seen says their deal is up in another year or so.

Texas weren't the ones that wanted to leave this time around.

Actually I think you're right about their TV contract. Though the main reasons for expansion were their own network.
In the end everyone benefits, with the main benefactors being Texas.

I'd think Utah would bolt to the Pac-10 here shortly.

The only other move I can think of is if Scott wants to make one last attempt at breaking up the Big 12 and invites Kansas next. I don't think they'd take the offer though.

Re: Conference shuffling?
Way to go ESPN, thanks for reporting your fabricated speculation as fact once again
Texas sure pulled one over on everyone. The used the Pac-10 to leverage the other schools to give them everything they wanted and more. The other Big 12 schools new they couldn't ever equal the sloppy seconds from Texas by moving to another conference. Brilliant move by Texas.
Sure looks like Utah to the Pac-10 now to even out the conference, but apparently nothing is ever for sure until it's completely done.

Re: Conference shuffling?
Utah to the PAC-10 is a done deal if you still believe ESPN.
I talked to a Big Ten school trustee this morning and they are not done. Nothing imminent but still some irons in some fires, notably Notre Dame.
I almost feel bad for the dude who runs orangebloods. I've been put in a similar situation before, small-time web presence that gets used by one entity to float an idea to another and gets funneled all sorts of misinformation. He should know better and hopefully he learned from it and won't be so overzealous or spotlight-demanding in the future. Kind of sad that Texas would so blatantly use a die-hard Texas fan to commit their greed, but it's a crapload of $$. Very sad how ESPN completely trampled him asunder and is scapegoating him for all their own misinformation when I can guarantee you they encouraged it and fed his beast.

It's a done deal. The vote for the move will be conducted DURING the press conference.

Any Big 12 target left? Missouri for example?

Re: Conference shuffling?
i think the Big Ten said they were not looking at anymore Big 12 teams (for now)
who would they combine with Notre Dame if they did get the Irish? assuming they want to keep the teams even

Re: Conference shuffling?
Missouri planted themselves in the Big 12 for bettr or worse. They are probably the biggest loser in the status quo IMO. They could have moved to the Big 10 and quadrupled their TV money, but instead saw Texas railroad them.
This is just my impression, but it seems like Rutgers is waiting for something to happen to their south before they jump. The ACC/SEC detente can't last long and when that shuffle happens I think the Big East gets divided up and that's when Rutgers goes to the Big Ten. Syracuse too. Had TAMU joined the SEC I think all those dominoes would have fallen already, with the SEC expanding to 16, the ACC pillaging the Big East BCS football schools (Louisville, Pitt, WVU, USF, Cincy, UConn) and the other two jumping to the Big Ten, probably with Notre Dame. Maryland and WVU are potential Big Ten candidates, Maryland moreso. Actually I think USF would try real hard to get in the SEC but unknown how that would play.
Charlotte is adding football for 2012 (or 13, depending on who you trust) and they'll fit somewhere, too big a school to linger in C-USA for long a la USF. If WKU ever gets respectable they could be upwardly mobile too but IDK if they'll ever get there.

Re: Conference shuffling?
I don't think Missouri ever had much chance of a Big 10 invitation. MU just doesn't offer the Big 10 anything special--no phenomenally successful football program like Nebraska, no big bucks and tradition like Notre Dame, no lucrative new market like the East Coast schools (especially since Illinois already gives the Big 10 a share of the St. Louis market).
Missouri was pretty much screwed from the get-go. It didn't help that MU administrators didn't realize this. They bought their own BS about MU's attractiveness to the Big 10, but probably the only harm done by this is that it added an avoidable PR black eye to an unpreventable situation.
With the prospect of competing against Texas and Oklahoma football on even more uneven terms than before, I'm sure Missouri would be happy to bolt from the Big 12. But the Big 10 seems like a long-shot...I think it only happens if Notre Dame joins, the East Coast schools all say no, and the Big 10 feels like it still needs a fourteenth team to balance schedules.
I wonder if the SEC would be more interested in Missouri, if that conference ever decides to expand.

They don't as of now......but $$$$$$$$ may help change their minds at some point in the not so distant future.

Re: Conference shuffling?
aren't they getting a bunch of it now? i thought that was one of the reasons they wouldn't join because they'd have to share all their money and lose out on their tv deals and stuff

Re: Conference shuffling?
i still think Nebraska and Colorado should have stayed in the Big 12. Why is La Tech in the WAC? shouldnt they be somewhere else? TCU should have been added to the Big 12. Boise St. and Nevada to the Pac-12.
