Ramon Sessions' Role Next Season

Post#1 » by writersblock » Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:18 am

Forgive me if you've already discussed this (and if you have, please point me in the right direction), but what do you guys think about Sessions' role next year. All year I thought Rambis played him insufficiently and really wasted his talent, until the last month or so. Do you see him getting a larger role, or back to the minimal minutes in a back-up role next season?

He will play enough minutes to increase his trade value before the deadline. If he is not traded in the next few weeks...definitely see him as high quality filler in a lot of trades to teams like Detroit or Indiana.

He'll be traded either this draft or next.

A lot of it depends on the Draft and our offseason. If we drafted Cousins, I would imagine that Flynn would start. If we acquire Johnson than I would hope Sessions would start. If I had to give a rough draft answer I would imagine that not much would change. Sessions was actually told that the starting position for point guard isn't set in stone for next year. Maybe that could be used to motivate, but I hope it's a sign that Sessions could start more often. Sessions is the more efficient point guard of the two. His shots go down (no real 3 point game though), his rebounding is better [than Flynn], and he doesn't turn the ball over as much. I have always envisioned Flynn to be a spark off the bench (even with future with Rubio) and was a bit surprised that he was given the starting spot. I think either Sessions or Flynn will have to eventually have to be shipped the moment Rubio decides to play, but that's still up in the air.

I agree with you that Sessions is a decent PG. MIN lucked into signing him for that cheap contract because the Rubio negotiations took so long, and we were the last team standing with spending money and a job for Sessions. Kahn recognizes his youth and talent, and has done all he can to get Sessions minutes while they develop Flynn, such as going with the unorthodox approach of carrying only two PG's.

Sessions picked up the more complicated MIN offense before Flynn, but we'll see how they both look after the summer. He gives the Wolves the flexibility to trade Sessions or Flynn, and not lose too much continuity when a new PG needs to be found. I think few wolves fans are dying to see him start, but few are terrified of the scenario either.

If he is not traded, any increase in minutes he gets will be at the expense of Johnny.
If they both stay one of them is going to be showcased to be traded before next year's draft, and my money is on Johnny getting the bulk of the minutes again.

While I think Flynn is the longer term choice of the two, I can see Sessions being used to push him and, if he out works him, would be given the starting position. Either way one has to go, but I can understand why they gave Flynn so many minutes this year.

I thought I heard Rambis say that Flynn and Sessions will have to fight for the starting role next season.

I think Kahn will just play it by ear and wait. If the right deal comes along for Sessions, he'll pull the trigger, if not he'll play behind Flynn again. There's no rush to trade either of them.
