Sure, he has 14% body fat (according to his Sacramento interview; down from 16.2% at the combine). Normally, I would be concerned, because it usually means that that player is not able to slide his feet well, defend the pick-and-roll or do a myriad of other basketball related functions. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT THE CASE WITH COUSINS! He has the ability to guard PFs just fine, more than fine, really, even at 290lbs.
Moreover, he left the Kings' facility as the best shooter that has done a workout with them this year, canning 78% of his jumpers!
I won't sit here and tell you that I'm not concerned with how his attitude would mesh with Avery. I am. But Avery likes big bodies who can play physically and have skill. They are few and far between, but there is one in this draft. Many question DC's work ethic and passion for the game, but he competes so well, is so dominant with the ball in his hands AND YET is willing to accept any role he is given, that he seems bound to make it big in the league.
1- The talent and athletcism between this guy and DC is MILES apart for the same age. DC was a 240 pound sleek jump out of the gym, handle the ball end the end super freak coming out of college. DC didnt ballon up until his heart problem 8-9 years into his NBA career. He was an absurd leaper...Cousins has one of the worst verticals in the draft. DC was the best reboudner in NCAA history coming out. His court vision, his shooting range his complete package was off the charts. THis guy is NOT that.
The DC comparison is this perception of lazy, bad atitidue. The underrated side of what people recall DC as. Not the reality. And to be compared to the negative memories of a guy? Not a good thing.
2- Accepts any role given? He has been descirbed as not very coachable by many reports.
3- There are plenty of good playing former NCAA guys in Italay, China, and god knows where as we speak. Doesnt lock in anything.
4- To say that it is simply not the case that he isnt a guy who cant slide, or run the floor or guard 4's based on small stretches in limitted minutes in an 30 game NCAA season VS playing end to end in the NBA 82 games a year, 2 a day practices, plane rides, cash in your pocket a new city every night, being the picked on rook rather than the beloved MAN on your team in a college town...honeslty...its confidence built on nothing.
To believe he will overcome? OK. To make light of it all as if its a non issue? Like he can absolutely guard today's best of the best athletes in the world every night without fouling out in 5 seconds? Or that a guy who often failed to get back down the floor as a freshamn in college is going to convince a coach he should play if he does that in the NBA?
We take him we take him. But to be so cavalier about the red flags? To act like this guy is money in the bank? Nonsense.
