2010 Wiz Board Mock Draft (Final Mock page 5)

Post#1 » by LyricalRico » Thu Jun 17, 2010 3:11 pm

Okay, one week until the draft. Yes - we already have a thread where we can discuss the pros/cons of certain players and speculate on possible trades. But in this thread we are going to actually try to predict each pick of the first round. So the discussion won't be on what players we like better than others, but what we think a particular team will do when they are on the clock.

We've got 7 days to figure out 30 picks, so we'll do 5 picks a day. For example, today everybody will post their first 5 picks. At the end of the day, I will tally everybody's lists and associate players with whatever pick most people put them at. If there are any ties, the player who received more votes for a previous pick will get the nod.

I'll start:

1. WAS - John Wall
2. PHI - Derrick Favors
3. NJ - Evan Turner
4. MIN - Wesley Johnson
5. SAC - DeMarcus Cousins (might actually be DET making this pick)
(Edited after PHI/SAC trade)

Don't forget to vote for who you think will be the most accurate on draft night. Let's see if we can beat the so-called experts!

Do you want to do it that way or do you want to do it more interactively? Let's just go one pick at a time. After about two hours of voting/debate, we can apply the consensus pick and move on to the next one. Also, are we voting who we think the team will pick, or who we would pick if we were picking for the team?

I figure there's no need to debate #1 so let's start with #2.

Who should Philly draft at #2? Clearly it's between Turner, Favors and Cousins. If I were their GM, I'd take Favors. I think they'll take Turner, though. So I guess my vote is:

#2 pick - Philly - Evan Turner

I changed 2 and 3 due to the Sixers trading Dalembert away.

1. John Wall
2. Derrick Favors
3. Evan Turner
4. Wesley Johnson
5. Greg Monroe

1. Wall
2. Turner
3. Favors
4. Johnson
5. Cousins

If we take Nate's approach we could really start at 5, that's where it gets tricky.

I thought about that, but I didn't want us to start analyzing individual players since we already have a thread for that. It's not that I'm trying to discourage discussion. If folks want to take issue with somebody else's list, by all means voice your opinion. But I think that going pick by pick would end up turning this into just another draft thread.

Also, I think groups of 5 gets more people involved. What if most people were offline when we were discussing a particular pick? This way, no matter what time somebody logs on during a particular day they can cast their vote. I think taking that route is more likely to lead us to a true concensus mock that reflects as many opinions as possible.

So, unless the majority are in violent disagreement let's stick with the groups of 5 method.

(Besides - it's MY thread and I'll go in groups of 5 if I want to. :D )

i think the top 3 is in near consensus.

the minny pick is fairly easy to guess too though imo is going to be dealt. they need backcourt help, and perimeter shooting. they may very well resign foye in free agency. as is though, i guess wesley johnson is the common sense pick.

at pick 5 it gets a little contentious. cousins or monroe? my gut feeling is that they pick monroe because he seems like he'd be able to play off jason thompson better.

so? pretty much what dx has for their top 5. wall - turner - favors - johnson - monroe.

Something else to consider:

The Timberwolves would like to have DeMarcus Cousins swing through town, but his agent isn't sure, based on personnel, there's a fit. [David] Kahn said Cousins' agent has been made aware the team's roster might not look the same next Thursday night as it does today. Kahn said the agent has been "counting bodies" on a team that now includes Al Jefferson, Kevin Love and could include Darko Milicic and Nikola Pekovic once the free agency period commences in July. Kahn called the team's situation "fluid." Translated that means expect either Jefferson or Love to be traded in the coming days, the fourth of five "windows of opportunity" to remake the team in a 17-month period as Kahn called them when he was hired in May 2009.

Darko isn't under-contract so who-goes, Al or Kevin? Minny takes cousins at 5 and still has pick 16 to take Damion James, Hayward, or possibly Babbitt.

Nobody necessarily has to go, not like the Wolves make any sense. They took three PGs last year, this year they're going to add to their crowded front court.
