Walter McCarty Announced as Assistant Coach

Post#1 » by PaceWalker » Thu Jun 17, 2010 7:06 pm

What do you guys think of this? I always hated him when we played him. Seems like O'Brien is just giving jobs to his buddies that will always be "yes" guys to him.

McCarty was a bad pick for an assistant coach in my opinion....he's not going to make a good coach under O'Brien. He's one of those guys that's going to just follow O'Brien and not question him at all. I'm so sick of the way our coaching staff is, basically O'Brien does anything he wants, even if it's stupid and there aren't assistants there to make sure we don't screw up too much. That's why Lester Conner is gone...

Pretty ho-hum move by the front office in all honesty. O'Brien and McCarty will both be gone by season's end.

If "less than mediocre" is the theme, then this is a GREAT hire!

Well, I don't know too much about Walter's coaching credentials.
Working for Pitino is quiet good though.

I do agree with the above and hope this isn't a "we're buddies" hiring by Obie.
My concerns around this are
1. Walter may be a yes man and not question Obie
2. Walter is relatively inexperienced as a coach
3. The biggest concern is that he is young (only 36) and may not get the respect of the players.

Walt-ah is perfect for the job.

Mainly, he was willing to take a job with absolutely no job security, knowing that his boss was going to get fired within a year.

Walter never struck me as a coach back in the day, but he is a Hoosier so you know his IQ is top-notch. Regardless, it might be one and done for the entire staff. This is neither a good thing or a bad thing, its just another move.

there is never anything wrong with hiring an African American former pro player as an assistant coach. if you think assistant coaches are hired to disagree with the head coach, think again. Walter's chief duty will probably be to serve as a communications link between the players and OB.

So as long as an assistant coach is African American, signing them can never be bad? That's the dumbest thing I've heard all day.

Not to open a huge can of worms or anything, but on this topic, I really get tired of hearing the "there NEEDS to be more African American coaches in pro sports" stuff. If they are the right man for the job then awesome, good for them. I could care less about the color of their skin, it's about winning. Skin color shouldn't matter. Yes, I am white. I could care less what color my team's coaches are. Mike Davis was at IU, I had no problem w/ that.

I'm not suggesting that a coaching staff needs to be all of any color just as I'd never suggest that the teams need to be all anything. but when Brown left our coaching staff and went to Cleveland, it left Carlisle with a major communications problem. it's not so much a skin color thing as a common experience and culture thing. a head coach shouldn't be a "friend" to the players but the staff needs to include people who can fill that role. I see Walter as a good hire.
