NY Post reporting the ASG wants out!

Post#1 » by td00 » Fri Jun 18, 2010 12:24 pm

Could we finally get some closure to our ownership group?

Sounds like a bad fit to go along with Philips and the Thrashers.

I would no way come in and take over 2 franchises that struggle to find an identity.

The ASG has never come in and fully committed to being a championship contender. More and more makes sense every day going forward with this group.

The long road is almost over. Let's hope for a better group to support going forward and one that doesn't have the chaos that this group brought to Atlanta sports for 7 years.

The real winner in all this is David McDavid....remember him?

Let me win the lottery first, and we can have a meeting on it next week.

Any chance Arthur Blank might be interested, or is he solely a football guy?

Atlanta Spirit Statement on Sale of Teams and Arena

Bruce Levenson and Michael Gearon, two of the principal partners of Atlanta Spirit LLC, the parent company that owns the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers and Philips Arena operating rights, have released the following statement regarding the rumored sale of the teams and arena:

“As has been shared publicly for more than a year, we are interested in finding minority investors and have engaged a firm to assist us in that effort. We have no plans to move either team, and remain committed to the Hawks, the Thrashers, Philips Arena and the city of Atlanta.”

Minority investors? Who in their right mind would look at the public track record of the ASG and want any part of that?

Whether Spirit is selling teams or not, scrutiny is justified

I like and respect Jeff Schultz for being honest about the ownership. It's about time the AJC stopped sugarcoating all the articles related to this worthless ownership.

you make it sound like they vetoed some Lebron trade or something?

really wish one of them did get involved and told Billy, don't draft Diaw, don't draft Childress, don't draft Marvin, don't draft Sheldon, don't sign Joe, sign Larry Hughes instead.

You had me up to not sign Joe and sign Larry Hughes. Joe has been an excellent player for the Hawks with the only problem being the ASG or Knight falling for the Phoenix bluff that they would match and giving up 2 picks in the process. Larry Hughes hasn't been a good fit with anyone in league and would likely have been the same here. As much as I hate Billy Knight (and it is hate), he had to have the backing of at least someone on the committee-based ownership. Either they believed in him or shared the same opinions. The ASG can't wash their hands of his incompetence.

^ i think you missed the sarcasim?

but i thought the general rule was that the owner should not tell the GM what to do and just sign the check. which is what the ASG did. they gave Billy the authority to offer big contracts to KMart, Eric Dampier, Eddie Curry, Jason Terry, etc.

Billy did offer big contracts to alot of bad players, just lucky for the Hawks that few of them accepted.

I did miss the sarcasm, sorry. You know, now that you mention we did chase a lot of bad players. Billy Knight was truly horrible and the ASG was horrible for employing him.

^ i agree that Billy was a bad hire (but i'm not really sure what the other candidates were), but i don't agree with a statement that the ASG were not committed to winning, because they were willing to do what good owners are willing to do, and that is give out huge sums of money for players, and that can be seen in the max offers they offered to Joe and KMart.

"KMart, Eric Dampier, Eddie Curry, Jason Terry"

I believe the ASG wanted those guys just as much because we needed a big name at the time. It's not like those free agents actually wanted to play for us. We have some solid players now, but it's completely different from the past, so I understand why we pursued those players.

A lot of free agents used Atlanta to drive up offers elsewhere with little real consideration of signing (like Sam Cassell). The other thing those names show (excluding Terry who was attempt to sign to an extension guy) was a desperate quest for a big guy.
