What's happening in Philly...

Post#1 » by enetric » Sun Jun 20, 2010 12:04 am

As I did with the Twolves thread, I think what is going on with the 76ers needs to be looked at right now.

I dont expect Philly to take anyone other than Turner unless they are paid to make a deal not to. If they do deal, I expect whoever deals with them will want Turner anyway.

Here is video coverage of the workouts Cousins and Favors had in Philly. If anyone finds something more detailed than this like the Kings video...please post it.

Cousins looks absolutely exhausted in this video is my one comment from what little they showed.

POSTED: June 19, 2010 76ers' Stefanski still looking to make more deals

When it comes to last season's 76ers, one is down, and there could be more to go.

A day after trading Samuel Dalembert to the Sacramento Kings, Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski on Friday said that he will continue to aggressively look for deals.

"After you come off of a 27-win season, you got to be aggressive," Stefanski said. "We are going to keep looking to see if we can tweak this even more. Yeah, we have to be more active."

The team shipped the disgruntled Dalembert, a 6-foot-11 center, to the Kings for 7-1 center Spencer Hawes and 6-7 combo forward Andres Nocioni, both of whom lobbied to leave Sacramento.

Stefanski wouldn't name players he is willing to part with or positions he wants to upgrade through a trade.

"I don't know what positions or big needs [need attention], but we will just see the players that we have and what we can get back for them if it makes us better," Stefanski said. "We are not going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade. Yesterday, we made a trade that made basketball sense to us."

The Sixers concede they lost a rebounding and shot-blocking presence by trading Dalembert.

However, new Sixers coach Doug Collins said the trade changed for the positive the team dynamic for Elton Brand.

"I was thinking I had to play Elton Brand strictly as a five [center], because I just didn't think he and Sam played well together," Collins said. "Now, I feel Elton can play with Hawes. I think he can play with [Marresse] Speights. So it changes the dynamics of that."

Collins added that the trade gives the Sixers the bigger lineup that he's more comfortable with.

In Hawes, the Sixers said they have one of the league's up-and-coming centers. He's averaging 8.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1 block per game since being drafted after one season at the University of Washington by the Kings on the first round in 2007, 10th overall.

"He's a young player that can shoot the ball," Collins said. "We feel like we can throw the ball in the post and cut off of him. He's a very good passer.

"Obviously, when you lose Sam, you lose defense and rebounding. But you get a couple of other pieces, and we feel good about that."

The Sixers also feel good about adding Nocioni. The Argentine is the kind of tough, hard-nosed player that Collins likes.

"One of the things I've talked about is adding toughness," the coach said. "And Nocioni is one of the toughest guys in the league, which I think is going to help us."

In six seasons with Sacramento and the Chicago Bulls, he has averaged 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists a game.

"The city of Philadelphia is going to like Nocioni because he puts it on the floor every night," Stefanski said. "He is [good] defensively."

But there are also red flags associated with acquiring Nocioni and Hawes.

Hawes could never establish himself as a full-time starter during his tenure in Sacramento. In addition to always having his toughness questioned, he fell out of favor with Kings coach Paul Westphal at one point last season.

After being traded by the Bulls in February 2009, Nocioni also never established himself as a starter. He also comes with off-the-court baggage, serving a two-game suspension last season after pleading no contest in California for drunk driving.

And both players didn't hide the fact that they wanted out of Sacramento.

That's doesn't bother Stefanski.

"Two lobby to get out where they were, and one guy [Dalembert] lobbied to get out of Philadelphia," he said. "I think it's a toss-up."

Iverson back? Former Sixer all-star Allen Iverson is planning to return to the NBA next season, according to his personal manager, Gary Moore. The Sixers have no interest in signing the free agent, the team said.

I warming up to Favors more. He's starting to sound more confident and less nervous with each interview, more comfortable.

Cousins looks noticeably skinnier as well.

I'll honestly be happy with either of these guys, although I still hope for Turner.

HAHAHAHA! That was great. My sense of humor....

As for a skinnier Cousins....???? I think it was having the camera further back. But did you happen to notice him sucking wind hard at a couple of points? One that he wasnt doing anything?

I agree about Favors. he is coming off better with each interview. And talent wise...despite that I have read anything about Cousins being weighed and actually being lighter (that would make me happy) I have seen more of what you like so much about him.

Still not thrilled with his red flags....but he more gifted than Curry. No doubt. So? Whoever we get...lets just hope it all works out.

Or...lets threaten Stefanski with those nude pics of him and Mile Ilic to allow Turner to drop.

Honestly I'll be fine with either Favors or Cousins, really there's no clear cut answer on who we should take.
If I were making tha pick I'd take Favors.

However I would happily offer all 3 of our picks for Turner.

The best part is that we may not have to trade up to get him!

Turner is a notch above both Favors and Cousins both in terms of ceiling and what I like to call "basement" (the worst reasonable outcome for a player). However, I'm not willing to trade up for a redundant asset. Both Cousins and Favors can fill a bigger need than Turner, so it's cost-inefficient to spend extra assets for Evan. Plus, I'm still crossing my fingers than Bledsoe is available at 27. He screams high-yield prospect under Avery to me! Don't want to throw that away carelessly.
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.

http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/2010/06/20/is-andre-iguodala-outta-here/

For instance, if the Sixers take Turner, they will have effectively selected a player with the same skill set and style of play as Andre Iguodala.

“If you take Turner, you have to do something with Iguodala,” a Western Conference GM says. “Turner doesn’t have the athletic ability of Iguodala, but Iguodala doesn’t have the feel for the game Turner does.”

And neither of them can shoot, although Collins assured the media Thursday that Turner should have no problem improving that area of his game. “Shooting is one area of the game you can get better at,” he said, conveniently omitting the fact that Iguodala has never improved his long-range marksmanship, despite hiring a personal shooting coach.

Another Western Conference exec uses the word “redundancy” to describe the Turner-Iguodala pairing, since both players need the ball in their hands to be effective. “There’s not enough floor space for the two of them,” he says. The selection of Turner “might lead them to do commit to trading Iguodala,” he says. Now, that’s an idea. But how is it possible? Iguodala still has four years and roughly $56.5 million left on his Superfund site of a contract. Taking responsibility for that could lead to the beheading of a GM. Then again…

“Teams would like him, because they need a playmaker,” the Western exec says. “There are enough teams that need wing playmakers.”

Sounds great. The Sixers draft Turner, trade Iggy for a draft choice and expiring contract, and the rebuilding contract continues apace. Except for one thing. “I would never draft Turner to trade Iguodala,” the Western exec says. About the only reason he can see to do that would be for salary cap relief.

So, maybe Iguodala – despite his shaky shooting – is a better prospect than Turner, who carved up a rotten Big Ten Conference this year. If that’s the case, the Sixers should take Favors. “He would be their best frontcourt player and has a chance to be special,” the Western exec says.

An Eastern Conference basketball operations chief echoes that sentiment. He thinks Favors has tremendous potential, since at 18 he has already demonstrated the ability to rebound and defend well. He’s a solid character guy who appears ready to work hard at becoming a big-time NBA player.

“From day one, he’s an elite-type athlete and has the size to compete right away,” the Eastern boss says. “He can rebound the ball and defend, and the rest of his game will grow down the line. He can give you those two things and finish in transition.”

The decision to dish Dalembert might just make Favors the obvious choice, since the Sixers now do not have a good interior defender. The Western Conference GM thinks Favors “can absolutely play center in the NBA.” And even if Favors is a true four, he will be better than Marreese Speights almost from the jump. Thaddeus Young is a three man, and Elton Brand is a pick-and-pop jump shooter who will be best utilized off the bench. Some think Favors could even become a better player than Kentucky guard John Wall, the de facto first overall pick. “There was a time this year when you wouldn’t have been laughed out of a scouting meeting if you said you would take Favors over Wall,” he says.

So, is it Turner or Favors? The Sixers have options, and they have decisions to make. I would take Favors and worry about fixing the two guard spot in the future. No matter what happens, this will be a wild week in Sixerland. Let’s hope the results pay off.
