Is Fedor the Best Heavyweight Currently?

Post#1 » by Wade3Iverson » Sat Jun 19, 2010 7:03 am

Of course Fedor is one of the greatest (if not THE greatest fighter of all time) but it's clear to me that the MMA scene has exploded recently. There just seems to be a lot more well rounded fighters nowadays than there was even a few years ago.

Fedor hasn't really fought anyone in the last 2+ years. Is Fedor even the best heavyweight in Strikeforce? Could Overeem pose a real threat to his undefeated record?

How about Fedor vs the UFC heavyweights Lesnar, JDS, Carwin, Velasquez, etc.

There are rumors that Fedor will retire, but I hope that he will at least fight one of the big guns before he goes out.

Thoughts?

IMO Fedor would lose to both Lesnar and Carwin. So, while his history makes him #1 in a ranking sense, I think Lesnar is the actual best HW right this minute.

Lesnar i can see. No way with Carwin though. Carwin would try to stand and get KTFO'd in brutal fashion.

That's ridiculous. "Destroy"?

Maybe...maybe he would beat them. But destroy??? C'mon.

Yes, no way I see Carwin or Lesnar beating Fedor. Fedor is that good. You guys are kidding yourselves saying Lesnar and or Carwin would beat Fedor.

I think Brock would run through him. But Carwin isn't nearly as powerful and explosive as Brock so I think Fedor would win with whatever he wanted against Shane. I think Velasquez would be another tough fight for Fedor, but that's about it. JDS has a punchers chance, which usually doesn't end well for guys who face Fedor in that situation.

I think Brock would win.

Carwin, Velasquez, Overeem, JDS (probably in that order), have a decent chance too.

We'll be lucky if we even get the Overeem fight though.

Fedor is the GOAT, but I don't think he can continue his domination against the "new breed" of HW. Unfortunately we may never find out exactly how he stacks up.

I don't think Fedor would beat either Brock Lesnar or Carwin. I'd give him a shot against Velasquez. I think the reason Fedor is so beloved is that, before every fight, if you were to just look at the two guys in the ring and know nothing of their pasts, 9/10, you'd pick the other guy (regardless of who) to beat Fedor. The guy's under 6' tall and not particularly imposing. The physique masks the skill.

And that he's never lost in over 10 years of fighting.

So essentially Fedor would do to Lesnar what Lesnar did to Mir last time around? Ok.

I think he would. Lesnar and Carwin have big heads and use little head movement. They are there to be hit. Fedor has the hand speed, the power and the accuracy to take them out. But Lesnar and Carwin certainly have the size, strength and wrestling ability to potentially give Fedor hell.

What are you talking about. In the past 2 years he's already stopped Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rodgers. That's 3 heavyweights ranked in the top 10. He would have fought Josh Barnett (another top 10 heavyweight) if the (Please Use More Appropriate Word) didn't test positive for steroids and is about to fight Werdum (yet another universally considered top 10 heavyweight). If/when he beats Werdum he'll likely fight another universally considered top 10 heavyweight in Allistair Overeem. So by the time we reach July of this year he would have likely defeated 4 straight top 10 heavyweights in two years and will likely have beaten all four by stoppage.

I have no problem if you want to criticize Fedor for not coming to the UFC but just because you don't know a lot about the sport don't accuse him of fighting nobodies.

UFC rejects ARE nobodies. Rodgers is ok competition for Fedor but not werdum, sylvia and AA after being cut from UFC.

Exhibit A for why I hate rankings. Too many guys entrenched in the top 10 based on what they've done in the past, not based on what they are doing in the present.

I'm not saying those guys are the best competition for Fedor, but NONE of those three guys were cut from the UFC. So to say they were is obviously misleading.

I have a feeling Werdum beats him.

I don't see what Werdum has that could possibly challenge him. I look at the Dos Santos fight and Fedor's fight against Arlovski, who Werdum had trouble with, and see Fedor winning in similar fashion.

In Arlovski's defense he was the number 2 HW in the world when Fedor fought him. Sylvia was around 5th in the world.

Werdum is not a legitimate challenge to Fedor. Heck I don't know if he cracks my top 10. But the UFC may have been quick to cut him. He beat Vera and Gonzaga before being nearly decapitated by JDS like every opponent who fights JDS.

I don't know where to put Rogers in the rankings. I always thought he got lucky by catching Arlovski's suspect chin. Then he actually made Fedor work. But then Overeem ran right through him. I guess I put him right next to Werdum in the borderline category.
