Yeah, Knicky is an OLB... I need to check myself on him a bit. I'm too jacked about him- he's my 4th favorite Packer rookie right now. I'm thinking Bryce Paup!-- I had his jersey in HS.

Besides the Shields article, JSO also had one on all the UDFA LB's, including Knicky.

Shepard sounds like he has a huge arm but doesn't know where it is going. Might be intriguing if Mac can help with his accuracy.

Shepard is my ideal 3rd qb practice squad type of guy, athletic, has some wits about him, and a strong arm. As noted in the article, much of his inaccuracy or low passing percentage could be attributed to the caliber of WR he was playing with and the penchant for school's like USD to run with whatever new freshman recruit they have at WR. Similarly, I think this is the type of cat that could really benefit from Pro level coaching, get those mechanics tweaked up a little bit and he could be a #2 someday that might look enticing enough with his combination of running/strong arm that another team might trade us some value for him. I definitely like him over many of the QBs available from round #5 on.

Also, and sorry to sound like a nut going off on these Undrafted FA signings, if I can resonate what others are saying, I'll proclaim right now I think Shields will make this team (and may make a run for my favorite packer if he usurps Bush and knocks him off the squad). I don't have near as much face in Knicky to make the squad as others, but between Jones natural progression (hopefully in the weight department) and some hungry LBs looking to kill themselves to make a squad, OLB isn't that bad. This is an improved squad, no doubt.

I just noticed that Ciron Black hasn't even been signed as an undrafted free agent. i was never very high on the guy but that's pretty surprising to me.

Like a few others, I really missed on Knicky—he didn’t even make it to the training camp 80 man roster…Shields worked out just a little bit & my man Campbell will be in the mix for an OL spot next year.

Two remarkable points about the Packers 2010 undrafted rookie class is how special Shields is & the crazy depth of the group; And, I’m just talking about the 14 rookies who originally signed with the Packers after the draft.

On Shields, it’s crazy the Packers got him as a UFA… If the 2010 draft was held today, knowing what we know now, Shields could be the 3rd pick of the draft- wow!... Myself, the only guy I’d trade Shields for is Suh. Obviously Bradford showed he’s a legit franchise QB prospect, so he’d go ahead of Shields. That puts Shields 3rd on my board. Admittedly I don’t know too many of the other top rookies, so there may be 1 or 2 others ahead of Shields… Again, to get a top 5 player out of the draft class as a UFA is amazing.

The beauty here is it doesn’t end with Shields. The entire 14 man UFA group was as good as another 7 pick draft… This isn’t my break down, I got it from floridapacker from another board— for me it really brought home how good this group is.

How many teams would trade their draft for this one:

(1) CB Sam Shields: Looks like a perennial pro bowl CB for the next decade.
(2) OLB/DE Frank Zombo: Rugged 3-4 OLB who makes plays.
(3) OL Nick McDonald: Projectable NFL center with good quicks and size.
(4) QB Graham Herrell: Solid all around QB skill set with leadership skills.
(5) S Anthony Levine: A good small school prospect. He’s a faster Charlie Peprah.
(6) OT Chris Campbell: A big guy and athletic. Worse OL have been drafted( hello Breno)
(7) WR Chastin West: A big receiver with ok speed. Not bad for the 7th round pick.

I was really high on Shields going into the season and I'm very happy that we got him locked up to a three year deal. He is already one of the best nickel backs in the league, amazingly. It is such a luxury to be able to go three deep with quality corners in today's NFL, very few teams can do it.

Harrell went into the CFL in 2009 without signing with an NFL team. This made him a NFL rookie FA in 2010. When the guy broke it down he made it clear to only count the 14 rookie FA’s originally signed by the Packers.

In that thread, Shields came out as a top 5 pick. Nobody listed 5 picks better than Shields. Again, I had him 3rd, but I don’t keep up with the rest of the league like some others… McCoy was the 3rd pick & everybody except one person had Shields ahead of him. The top two DB’s picked were Berry with the 5th pick & Haden with the 7th pick. The consensus was Shields would go ahead of them in a redraft.

In the discussion, posters were saying those 7 Packer UFA’s could be better than the Vikings, Falcons, Redskins, Colts & Jaguars draft picks…I agree it’s a stretch & it gets sketchy after Zombo. But like you said, the discussion highlights just how good TT & MM are at finding & developing long shot talent.
