Who The Jays Should Target Come Trade Deadline

Post#1 » by Wally West » Fri Jun 18, 2010 7:22 am

The Jays are having a pretty good season so far which could make us potential buyers come trade deadline. Here are a few things that we could look for come the deadline.

1. Acquiring an ace, top end pitcher. Our starting rotation is good but we could really use a guy that can win us games on nights that the hitting is not going so well. Possible targets? Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt

2. Could use a power hitting outfielder. I like our outfielding as it is with Wells, Lewis and Snider coming off of the DL soon but we could use another power hitter who would most likely be an outfielder. Possible targets? Alfono Soriano, Cory Hart or maybe even Rios LOL.. Thoughts?
Want: Trae Young, Michael Porter Jr., DeAndre Ayton, Jaren Jackson Jr, Marvin Bagley III, Mohamad Bamba, Shai Gilgeous- Alexander, Elie Okobo, Jevon Carter

It depends on which direction we are going.
I mean if we are looking l.t, it is better to be sellers because we have a few players whose value is at all time highs..so we should be able to get good prospects..

No, no, no and no.

Apparently you are new to the Blue Jays world and have no idea what the plan is? The Jays are rebuilding from the ground up and dont plan on being at their peak competitively for another 5 years or so. Trading for short term, high priced "fixes" who will cost us quality prospects is the exact opposite direction that management wants to go in.

Yep! Exactly, hope AA sticks to the plan.

We should be sellers at the deadline not buyers. We need to stock on prospects.

I don't like the idea of quick fixes i.e. vets who might cost us multiple prospects, but if there is a deal out there for a younger/youngish, quality starter, perhaps for a pitching prospect and big financial relief, I don't think you say no. After all, how many prospects does it take to develop, say, a .275 hitting major league third baseman with a bit of upside left? Do we have such a candidate high up in the organization? I'd love to get a third baseman for obvious reasons. If the big carrot is financial, i.e. Rogers' money, well they have saved quite a bit this year.

It would be irresponsible NOT to look at such a deal because there is no guarantee that a team that keeps drafting mainly pitchers knows how to fill a hole at third base through the farm system. In the end, it may come down to a trade at the major league level or free agent signing.

That being said, do I believe such a player is out there, waiting for a buyer? Probably not, but I am less familiar with NL rosters.

I think you get what you can out of this team as it is. Let them build camaraderie and fortitude by trying to stay in the race as late as they can. We have way too many glaring holes to make an honest run at the playoffs.

I agree with Dagger, that Rogers has saved plenty this year and that should give AA the cash to actually sign some of his draft pics and to possibly go after a free agent where he doesn't have to give up any prospects.

I'd like to avoid trading for Alfonso Soriano, if possible.

Brad Emaus, possibly. He definitely isn't your prototypical power-hitting 3B, but he's 24, gets on base at a very high rate, doesn't strike out, and has a little bit of pop. He's hitting .297/.407/.474 between AA and AAA this year, and could be a fringy starter at the position.

Absolutely no way we would bring in quick band-aid fixes. Like others have said, we need to move out overachieving players to playoff bound teams.

I'm on the official bring Alex Gordon to Toronto bandwagon. Currently mashing in the KC system. I feel like he could be like a Nelson Cruz, or Jason Werth, in the late blooming once highly rated prospect mold. Again provided we don't have to give up high end prospects. I'd be down to give up a Brad Mills type.

Exactly, any of these guys are not long term guys, and their value could not be higher. We need to load up on prospects. I think we need focus on a closer, and bullpen prospects, as well as a power 1st or 3rd. Brett Wallace will be one of those positions, and we need someone else for the other. Would also love a speedy outfielder. Fred Lewis has been a great addition, but dont think he is a long term solution either.

Definetely have to look to trade guys like Bautista and Buck. They are very attractive deadline acquisitions for budget conscious teams who think it may be their year to go for it.

Sadly no.

The blame is to stand fast to this re-building effort till Rogers simply reaches a point where the attendance at the Dome is so putrid that they force AA's hand to deal youth for middle of the road talent.

Is he still playing LF in Omaha? I think it'll be harder to get him than that, 'cause KC hasn't given up on him yet. At least that was the sound of the rhetoric coming from out there when he got sent down. They wanted to get him worked into a new position so he'd fit in for the long haul, but it's possible that was just lip service, 'cause what else would they say. Even so, I think he's probably got significantly more value than B.Mills, but KC makes all kinds of crazy decisions so I don't really know what they're capable of.
