Josh Childress possibly to Wizards
Hey, Hawks fan here, one of our Parisian fans linked this on the Hawks board. (Hawks fans in Paris but not in Atlanta? Big surprise, no?)
http://www.basketusa.com/news/36591/jos ... s-wizards/
Courtesy of Google Translate:
While Olympiakos asked him to reduce his salary significantly, Josh Childress has decided to return to the NBA. His rights still belong to the Atlanta Hawks winger but the globe-trotting is negotiating a long term contract with the Wizards, a contract that could be formalized within the next few days. For Washington, it certainly means they will not retain Josh Howard since the other ailer workforce, Al Thornton, is still under contract and it would be surprising to recruit Childress behind two other players.

I'm confused. We cannot talk to FAs until July 1st, right?
Do players in foreign countries not count?

Erm, wouldn't it be illegal to negotiate a contract at this point?
Can't say I like this, no.

lmao.
This was a MISTAKE Ernie Grunfeld tried to make 3 years ago. Now he has the money and the nerve to do it again!

very interesting... I just hope we don't pay too much for him. Childress is a solid player, nothing above average.

Well, teams can talk to their own free agents. And we can talk to Atlanta to negotiate a trade of his free agent rights. My guess is that we could get Atlanta's permission to talk directly to Childress.

Childress is Jared Jeffries with an afro.
He's no longer a solid player in the NBA. Having not played here for 3 years.

Yeah, Childress is a bench player. Those types of players are acquired after the stars are in place. Anything more than 2/6-7 is a mistake.

I don't know if I like the idea or not. It'll depend upon his price. If Melo is not an option next year, and if Childress costs something in the MLE range, then it's probably a decent acquisition. Childress is 27 so he'll be in his prime for the entire duration of his contract. He's a good defender and should be pretty well schooled in the Euro tradition of being a good role player. He still can't shoot though. He's shooting 33% from the closer European 3-point line, and 65% from the FT line.
Meh, on second thought, I don't like this acquisition unless it's something pretty cheap, like $3M-4M a year. I wonder what we'll have to give Atlanta to relinquish his rights?

Vomit. WTF?!? We might as well keep Howard on the cheap. He's far and away the better player. I'm not liking the rumors I've been hearing concerning the Wiz. This is a bad omen. What's next, we draft Cousins with 1st pick?

Why is it that ernie falls in love with under 6'6 small forwards. Thorton, butler, howard. Ernie has never given the wizards a smallforward with a 9'0 standing reach. Fire him already leonsis.

He's actually 6'9" with the afro.

Didn't need the photo for that reference.

Re: Josh Childress possibly to Wizards
Childress is a great finisher around the basket.
Twice finished second in the league in true shooting percentage.
Three times finished top-six in NBA offensive rating.
2005-2006 NBA Offensive Rating: 1. Billups, 2. Nowitzki, 3. Childress, 4. Nash, 5. Lewis, 6. Bosh, 7. Ray Allen
4 NBA seasons Childress overall shooting: .522 FG, .360 3PT, .799 FT
I always thought Childress could play G next to Arenas. I think he's a good player at the right price.

Agree with CCJ...solid acquisition if acquired for the right price. He plays solid defense which is a definite need for this team.

Re: Josh Childress possibly to Wizards
I like Childress, but I don't see the point of signing him. At 27, he's at the high point of his value, so I don't think he'll come cheap. Howard would likely be significantly cheaper. And while he's better than Thornton, I think the difference is small. He's simply a good complementary player. Why use your cap space on a complementary type player?

Yeah, the only thing I could think of is if they had a plan to move Gil and the cap hit didn't matter.
But exctly, he's a complimentary piece that you add, as No-D said, After you've got your stars in place.
Not a good idea. I like him, but not a good get at all right now.

There is no right price. Signing a role player to a long term deal makes no sense consideration our current stage in the rebuilding process.
I cannot feel comfortable about the direction of this franchise as long as Ernie Grunfeld is making the basketball decisions.

Re: Josh Childress possibly to Wizards
And we haven't even mentioned - we'd have to give Atlanta something for the right to sign him - another reason to be very disappointed if this happens.
