A solution for a new GM?

Post#1 » by NashtyNas » Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:37 am

I may be dreaming, but is it a possibility that Sarver contacts a disgruntled, sacked Kevin Pritchard and offers him a new job first thing to get a proven commodity at a cheaper price than normal?

I would love to have KP GM this team going into the future, especially because he is aggressive, not scared to pull the trigger yet not trigger happy either. He has decent drafting and is well connected around the league. He is most certainly out in Portland, and isn't very happy about having to leave.

What do you guys feel?

Pritchards all right, one of the better GM's in the league but for the salary he's going to want they would be better going in another direction.

As posted in one of the other many "GM'' threads, Sarver wants a puppet. He wants a yes man, and at a cheap price. No self-respecting GM would get near Sarver, especially after what happened to Kerr. My guess is that it will be a rookie GM, someone along the lines of, say, maybe ............. Pat Burke. :(

So I guess we can look forward to Mark West or Tom Leander

West might make a decent GM though...

@Kerrsed..... I'm not buying it. (Photoshop insert of a cow's rearend) This crap that Kerr was so wronged is just that... crap. The guy never wanted to be a GM anyways.

Only 30 guys get to be GMs... thats it. And only a handful of those GM's get to live in a climate devoid of winter, and few have such a solid fan base.

Sarver may be a jerk to work for, but an opportunity is open, and we will have a selection of qualified candidates from which to choose. We are under the Tax now, so if anything, this job should be easier, or rather, Sarver should be easier to appease. And its not like we are fielding a weakass or gutted team.

Kerr got what he wanted... drop the pity party.

I've always thought a GM who can bring a team to success despite of low budgets is truly a great one.
As much as some of you hate the Spurs (which I don't now), you have to admit that they probably have the best GM out there.

Maybe not last year, but years before that.

We ascribe motives to Sarver when in fact we don't know much at all about his business, his bank account, his conversations with the other parties involved - it's fun and all but bear it in mind. It's a bit like the arguments with posters form other boards regarding trades - "we won't take xx for yy" - in fact we have nothing to do with. It always seems odd when the discussion is framed as if we're really negotiating ... we're trading basketball cards at recess.

Like I say, fun - but none of it is real. Likewise we can only guess at Sarver's reasons for doing things - we don't really know what a happened with Kerr except that he apparently asked for something he didn't get and then decided to leave - we do know that he is a devoted family guy whose kids are growing up and that might have been enough to tip the balance. But we don;t know anything as 'truth', anymore than we know 'truth' when a politician makes a statement in the press.

We don't really know what Sarver made or lost on the Suns, we don't know what owners may have said amongst themselves about the new CBA negotiations, etc

I mention this only because I get uneasy with any statement about how "Sarver is" and "Sarver wants to" - we can infer from past actions, we can guess at at the motives and machinations but we are not privy to the inner workings

Look at how wrong the majority of the press is most of the time, and they are far better connected than we are ( and many of them dumb enough or deadline-crazed enough to swallow and regurgitate what they're fed)

Sarver is a very contradictory guy - look at how much tax he's paid and then how penny-pinching he can be. He's a hard to gut to get a read on, to my mind.

He may also be acting a little strangely due to stress - if he's really lost as much in banking and real estate as is reported. That would certainly freak one out a bit - the Suns may be his only real earner right now. From the numbers that are public it's very hard to see how the team could be in the red without some Hollywood accounting going on.

But it's all best guess

I thought this was going to go down the path of "Let Nash GM from the court" to groom him for after-court life.

Being a Blazer fan is like being in an abusive relationship. They tell you they love you and do great things for you, then turn around and sock you in the eye.

Their nack for finding and landing talent is very impressive.

Luis Scola - 2nd round, Pick 55
Tiago Splitter - 1st round, Pick 28
Dejuan Blair - 2nd round, Pick 37
George Hill - 1st round, Pick 27

Not to mention...

Tony Parker - 1st round, Pick 28.
Manu Ginobili - 2nd round, pick 57!

My god...

Weren't pretty much all those picks (not Blair and maybe not Hill?) done by Sam Presti? Who is not currently running OKC.

Most of the time their picks aren't that amazing if you think about it. I mean Blair most people were scared off just because of his knees. Everyone knew he could play, just unsure of how long or successful in the NBA. And honestly, I see his career flopping. He is to slow, small and has no leaping ability to play in the NBA. But a low risk high reward pick that late in the draft. Scola and Splitter they both picked because they knew they wouldn't be brought over for awhile. So it's basically a free player. They draft them and can leave them overseas while holding their rights. Not 100% sure but did they do that with Parker and Ginobli? Didn't Ginobli come over later as well?

Either way, their scouts ARE good. Mainly their overseas scouting. But their picks aren't that remarkable IMO.
