The only reason he slipped so far is that he was dead set on being a lotto pick in his head, and didn't really workout with any team outside of the top 14. When in reality, he should have worked out for several teams in the 10-20 range. If he would have done that, he would have been off the board in the first round for sure.

Also, don't let anyone tell you Whiteside is a headcase, because it couldn't be any further from the truth. He doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, and doesn't cheat on his girlfriend. I had him in Minnesota for a workout on his 21st birthday not too long ago. I offered to set up several things for him, but instead he was in bed at his hotel at 10pm. The bad character reputation comes mostly from the media, because Hassan really needs to work on his handling of the media. He is far too confident and honest, and has also been sheltered, so it really makes him look bad in interviews.

As a player he's at least 2 years away from contributing on the court, but is an amazing reactionary defender. Help defense is his biggest strength, and I spent a lot of time helping his man to man defense. He was a lousy man defender in college, but the rules allow you to be a lot more physical with opposing players in the NBA, and Whiteside did a good job picking up on this. He can also shoot the ball quite well to 20 feet, though he doesn't have much of a back to the basket game at this point.

I hope Sacramento gives him the time to grow as a player and continue to develop as a prospect. I know he has to be disappointed about slipping so far on draft night, but like I told him, situation matters more than anything, and he is going into a good situation.

Good read, and as happy as I was that Whiteside was still there at #33, I felt pretty bad for the kid. He sounded so bummed on the radio interview with Jason Ross. I bet that when he was working out for the Kings, he wasn't thinking about being picked with their 2nd round pick...

But that's ok! Use that to prove the rest of the league wrong!

I think he'll definitely get time to develop. We have quite a few guys in front of him right now and he has a lot of potential that we won't give up on him. Besides, if he can hit a jumper he'll do just fine playing off of Cousins. I'm excited we got him but I don't blame him for being depressed he fell so far.

I don't particularly care if he smokes, drinks, or cheats on his girlfriend. At least one of the three will happen for him soon enough. I don't see him as an NBA 5. I see him as a 4. What do you think?

I think he'll be able to play the 4 or the 5, but offensively his skill-set is that of a 4 right now. Defensively you want him getting stronger before he is a full time 5 anyway. He was actually up to about 240 pounds within a week of the NBA draft combine, but the travel and the workouts caused him to take a lot of that weight back off. He was down to 229 towards the end of the draft process. They really didn't have a strength and conditioning program to write home about at Marshall, and the Kings need to get him on a plan right away. In his prime if he fills out like I expect, I would see no problem with him at the 4 or 5.

Since you trained with him during the workouts, have you talked to him since he was drafted by the Kings tonight?

I've coached several players who are now in the NBA and I know how these guys think. Knowing what I know, this could be a real positive for Whiteside. I'm really going to emphasize to him that he needs to go out there starting tomorrow and practice every day with a chip on his shoulder. If he uses this as motivation it'll do nothing but help his career in the long run.

I have spoken to his agent but not Hassan yet. I plan on talking with him tomorrow.

Holy hell, we got my two favorite realistic possibliy prospects! EPic dat! Fantastic!

Whiteside has plenty of time to grow before we need him badly. This is a perfect senario.

lol, you can say that again... I find it hysterical looking at their draft thread. But to be honest they drafted a great wing player in Johnson and that's just what they needed. He's gonna be a great NBA player for years to come, he's a reall good shooter!! The only thing I don't like about Johnson is his age.. he's kinda old for a rookie (IMO).

Congrats from a Boston fan I think you have had two killer drafts in a row and think your bandwagon could be filling up real quick. Quick question: I forget who but one of the writers associated with the NBA intimated that Evans might have been a bit of a problem behind the scenes. Any truth to that?

We have some pretty tough door guards manning the ropes on our bandwagon...we don't just let anyone on for the ride.

As for your question about Reke, there has never been any indication from anything I've seen to suggest that he's been anything other than a fairly humble hard-working guy who listened and learned from the staff while stepping up as a leader for the team.
