Dan's with the Wolves wrote:Kahn said he told Gomes at the end of the season exit meeting that the Wolves were not going to bring him back. So he looked at the trade as the 16 for Webster + the cap savings of ~1m a year for Gomes' terminated contract.

He didn't seem to view Gomes' contract as an asset - more as a liability.

Is there something, we don't know about Ryan's contract?

Well if we cut him, there would still be a cap hit of 1 million, so by trading him and not cutting him we are saving a million.

His exact words were it was "the cherry on top". So in his eyes the deal was basically 16 for Webster which seems fair value.

Looks pretty nice to me. 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 40% from 3. I think he's going to be alot better playing uptempo as well.

I hope so. I really like Martell the person. One of my favorite Martell stories is from two years ago when he was hurt the entire year and we had the really bad snowstorm in Portland. Martell got out of his car and helped a lady push her car out of the snowbank. All the while wearing a cast. And that's reportedly not the only time he did that.

(by the way, he's not injury prone, he missed one year, and no other significant injuries to speak of)

The people in Portland have analysed Webster, since they see him every day:

2009-10 Season Review: Martell Webster

http://www.blazersedge.com : Draft Day Analysis
They trade shooter Martell Webster to Minnesota for rookie shooter Luke Babbitt. He's not an athlete like Martell and is unlikely to be a good defender, which Martell learned to do. He's not a transition guy. He's more of a pull-up shooter and less of a spot-up guy, which may bode ill if he can't muster the quickness to get free from a defender. But he's cheap and he's slated to play behind Nicolas Batum, which amounts to about 12 minutes per game under ideal circumstances. Babbitt is not going to be as helpful as Webster was but for practical purposes he may be an acceptable fit on the court and he's a much better financial fit.

I don't see why people are viewing Martell Webster's contract as out of line?

Take a closer look at the fact that he can defend SF's and SG's unlike Gomes who couldn't defend either the SF's or PF's he was asked to defend.

Take a closer look at the fact that he played a specialists role on a very well coached team that plays at one of the slowest paces in the entire league which plays against his strengths.

Take a closer look and see that his last two healthy seasons have both had triple digit totals in threes made.

Are the Wolves expecting to start Webster at shooting guard? Because he's not a shooting guard.

Can he guard SGs? That's really all that matters on our team.

CORRECT ! The Wolves will not be a traditional PG/SG/SF/PF/C team. But will be PG / 2 Wings / 2 Frontcourt. The Wolves have Brewer and Webster who can guard the opposing 2s.

I liked the statistical analysis where an R-squared value of 0.28 was a "strong correlation."

Kahn specifically pointed out that Webster can guard both SG & SF ... well.

Which is why I'm asking what the Blazer fan thinks...

In all reality, people need to realize that the situation of a player is a big factor in their success. In a league full of talent, only a few things have to go wrong for that talent not to equate to success. In Portland he didn't seem to have a roll or a good opportunity.

I once (naively) said I wanted Morrow for 6 mil a year as a free agent. Well comparing this guy to Morrow? I'll take Webster, Morrow can't jump, defend or play tough. This guy can and does, with some opportunity and his YOUNG age. He will most certainly get better. When you think hard about it, you can compare Wesley's and Martell's past. Portland was Martell's Iowa St. And Kahn is hoping we can be the Syracuse.

We have to have faith in our FO, and Ric Bucher's tweet really made me stop being angry (which was my first reaction) when he said that Babbitt was not having good workouts and most teams just gave up on him in regards to drafting him.

I love the idea of giving guys with talent a second chance (assuming they have good attitudes). Worked with Darko, hopefully we can start doing it more with Martell. If this trade works out, people r just gonna stop trading with Kahn ha!. OK I admit i'm getting ahead of myself.

Well put Dunk.

I like the Morrow - Webster comparison.

Slept on it, hit up Synergy to get a better read on Webster, and don't hate the trade as much today as I did yesterday. Still don't like it, but what's done is done.

A lot of the film had Webster isolated on the opponent's top scorer, seemed a bit miscast in that role, but gives good effort, has size, and moves his feet. Jumper looks great, and the results were there this year more than in the past. Finishes well around the rim, and he's got the strength to absorb contact. Not great off the bounce, good on basket cuts. I'm guessing that Rambis might have pushed for him, seems to fit the way he wants to play.
