You know it may come to that depending on how things pan out. If the S&T allows the bulls to sign a max i'd do that.

- Rose
- JJ
- Deng
- Amare/Bosh/Boozer
- Noah

The Bulls have enough cap to get 2 maxs?

If they shed Hinrich or Deng's contract, yes.

Posted in another thread, but apparently CHI just agreed to a trade with the WIZ in which their shipping Hinrich + #17 for pure cap space. Now, CHI is now in the catbird seat for FA and I'd think JJ would be 3rd (and possibly the 1st realistic option) on CHI's list for an upgrade @ wing.

I just realized that if it will keep Lebron in Cleveland away from Miami or Chicago, that I'd be willing to work out a Joe Johnson S&T with them to pay Joe the max.

I'm thinking:
Joe Johnson
for
Anderson Varajeo
Anthony Parker (expiring)
Sebastian Telfair (expiring)
and a future 1st

Lebron gets a running mate. Miami gets denied a 3rd running key free agent unless they want to sign 2 PFs and Chicago loses both top wing free agent candidates. It's not a great talent trade for use, but it does give us a high energy defensive and rebounding big for the bench without taking on any other long term commitments. The key is that it keeps talent from consolidating on one of the other Eastern teams and makes the playing field closer to level. It wouldn't do us much good to resign Joe while Miami adds Lebron and Bosh to Wade or Chicago adds them to Derrick Rose. As long as our competitors can only field 2 studs at a time we still have a chance (maybe not a great chance, but better than no chance at all). As for making the risk of making Cleveland too strong, I like the odds that Joe will experience drop off in performance before his contract is up and Antwan Jamison is possibly already slipping plus JJ Hickson isn't that developed yet. Risky, but worth a thought.

You could probably insist that we (Cleveland) take on a bad contract that you have as well

"Knicks high on Joe's list" - LOL is this a joke? Why would anyone want to play for the Knicks? They're terrible.

If the floated rumor about the Knicks being high on Joe's list is accurate it tells a lot about his mindset (just pay me). Then again most of the rumors right now are unfounded, so why should this one be different. Judging by the nature of the Joe rumors that are showing up in the media, someone in his group is worrying about what deal he'll get. Personally I would be panicked if I was Joe because he's going to get paid well by someone. Whether or not he squeezes every dollar out is a different matter.

ESPN just reported "The Knicks are planning to offer Joe Johnson a maximum-salary contract this Thursday at the start of free agency."

Was thinking something similar: that Cleveland probably would "max out" Joe to try to keep LeBron, so is there a S&T that would work? Atlanta gets something for Joe, and puts the screws to Chicago and New York (always a plus).

I would do the above trade.

The Rockets are considering chasing Joe Johnson, too, at least in part to give Bosh a suitable playmate. Johnson might be ready to move after his disappointing playoff series with the Hawks in which he was critical of the fans and eventually booed at home. But there are few doubts about his abilities. He's not Wade or James, but he is in the next group. Houston Chronicle

But if no players on the Knicks' roster appeal to Atlanta, Johnson, believing he will make up the difference through endorsements and through buying stock shares in Madison Square Garden, is willing to take less money to play with the Knicks, according to sources. ESPN.com

Having said that, Hawks free agent Joe Johnson is expecting a hard sell from the Knicks in the event LeBron opts to go elsewhere. Johnson has set up shop in Los Angeles with his agent, Arn Tellem, who has an excellent relationship with Walsh. As of early Monday, Johnson had yet to schedule any free-agent visits – in L.A. or elsewhere. CBSSports.com

One person with ties to Johnson suggested a possible reason why he is 1) in L.A., and 2) in no hurry to entertain visitors. Don’t be surprised if his strong connection to Clippers GM Neil Olshey explains why Johnson is conveniently ensconced in L.A. for the purposes of signing a max deal with the Clips. As a trainer for Tellem when Johnson was entering the draft, Olshey worked with Johnson and has maintained a strong relationship with him. CBSSports.com

Meanwhile, the Knicks are finalizing plans to meet with Joe Johnson on Wednesday in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. Pacific time, which is when free-agency courting begins, and possibly meet with Amar'e Stoudemire before flying to Ohio for Thursday's 1 p.m. James soiree. A Knicks official confirmed the James meeting but would not say if the Johnson/Stoudemire extravaganza is definite yet or if Dolan would partake in other meetings. New York Post

Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford says he expects teammate and fellow All Star Joe Johnson to re-sign with the team when free agency opens July 1. "I haven't talked to him about that, but I think he'll stay," Horford said Monday in Singapore, where he's part of a group of NBA players and coaches conducting a basketball clinic. "The team's number one priority is trying to get Joe back with us." USA Today

The Dallas S&T scenario is the 1st rumor I've heard that makes sense IMO.

It's the one I've been pimping for a while.

Get Dampier plus one other asset, then flip Dampier for someone who fits better. (Preferably a center).

Dampier's last year of his deal isn't guaranteed which is very nice in my making salaries match without greater pain.

BTW, I just read that Joe wants the 6th possible year on his deal. If the price tag wasn't deal breaker before that would be enough for me to not resign him.

are reports true you guys are gonna offer joe a max contract? If so Joe would be an idiot to turn it down. I like JJ a lot and love your team. Out of all the teams you guys got the best core, hes friends and teammates with these guys and has played with them for years. No better place then to be the man and continue to win and work on things to make the team better as a whole for years to come.

There is more than one Max. There is max money he could get from another team. There is max money he could get here and finally there is max money and years he could get here. Just because a story comes out that says Atlanta will offer him a Max deal doesn't mean that Atlanta is offering extra year or even more than what another team can offer. I'm just don't see Atlanta offering that extra year on the deal.

A person familiar with the Hawks' plans said they still hope to re-sign Johnson and are prepared to spend the money necessary to do so. The person said the Hawks fear Johnson might decide to leave for reasons other than money, including the criticism he received from fans and media after a poor showing in the playoffs last month.

Not that you can believe all these articles, but if he couldn't handle being criticized for how he played in the playoffs, well then why would anyone want to pay him 16M+ per year?
