Gomes
I know he's been beat to death. Feel free to merge this topic with another if necessary mods. My assumption is, we just end up waiving him. They'll say they explored options, and nothing came of it, and will waive him on Wednesday. Or whenever the deadline is.
But, for fun, let's explore where he can go. Gomes can only be traded by himself. He can be traded for another player or players making anywhere from $3,134,000 to $4,996,875. If he is to be waived, obviously, for the other team, the higher or closer to 4.9 the better. He could be beneficial for teams looking to move further away from the luxury tax limit as well.
Players can be combined, but I'll focus on individual players a team would send out for him, or could, and that might make sense for them to shed immediate/long term salary.
Atlanta:
Zaza Pachulia.
Cleveland:
Daniel Gibson
Dallas:
Matt Carroll
Deshawn Stevenson
Golden State:
Charlie Bell
Ronnie Turiaf
Lakers:
Luke Walton
Memphis:
Mike Conley
Miami:
Michael Beasley
New Jersey:
Yi Jianlian
New Orleans:
Darius Songailia
Orlando:
Brandon Bass
Philadelphia:
Louis Williams
Willie Green
San Antonio:
Antonio McDyess
Toronto:
Reggie Evans
Marcus Banks
Utah:
CJ Miles

I'll add, those could also be pieces of a larger, though "separate" deal. In other words, GS looking to shed salary. They give us Ellis for Miller and necessary filler in salary, and then in a separate deal, send Turiaf for Gomes, to then waive him. Or we trade Gomes for Conley, and then send Rudy for Haddadi or something along those lines.

Re: Gomes
My personal preference would of course be to use him in trade before cutting him.
Off of that list, Conley, Beasley, L. Williams and McDyess interest me the most.
I too don't believe that Portland will make a deal before tomorrow, but I'd be quite pleased if they did.

Teams trying to gain capspace wont be helped by Gomes' buyout since as far as my understanding goes he will still be on the cap for the full amount of his contract.

This is what I've heard as well, but I've seen it be reported both ways.

No, if he is waived before June 30th, his full salary is not guaranteed, just smaller portions each year. About 1.5 million or so.

Re: Gomes
cucad8....great job with the list. Of those mentioned, it has to be tempered with who might be available. I'll start with the ones I like:
Conley - Obvious conection with Greg and getting better as a PG. Mayo handles the ball so much for the Griz that Conley is a bit of duplication. With the possible loss of Gay, what will their lineup look like?
Beasley - Mentally a question mark but I would certainly be willing to take a shot on the former#2 pick. Miami is looking for as much cap room as possible so this might have a shot.
Bass - His minutes were nothing like he thought they would be and Portland could use that banger/rebounder guy that they currently really don't have.
I would rather they use it than lose it because it will never be worth more than it is right now. You could use the asset aquired by the trade deadline with Rudy or potentially Joel or Andre's contracts as well.

That's a great point TB. I think that concept would make me more willing to take a flier on someone you wouldn't normally "want" (Beasley).

I agree. Trade Gomes for Songaila. Shinn would love that deal since he essentially gets out of the final year of Songaila's contract. Meanwhile, the Blazers get a temporary backup PF who's expiring.

Agree on 2 of the 3. I'd easily take Conley or Beasley for Gomes. I'm not a big fan of Bass personally. Although maybe just to hear people stop talking about him, I'd trade for him.
Otherwise, I'd probably be interested in Yi, if only to get our guys extra all star votes. Or to save them more money, though it loses talent, Humphries and Terrence Williams? Doubtful.

I've heard that although Gomes contract will only cost an owner 1.5 million, it doesn't go off the cap.

Definitely agree with the rather use it than lose it thought. We could always look to acquire a player with as high a salary as possible, with the intent of using him packaged with Joel and potentially Andre at the deadline. Like swapping Gomes for Reggie Evans with Toronto. They shave another 4 million off of next season's salary. We add a 5 million dollar expiring contract. Added with Joel and Andre gets us over 19 million in expirings. And, you have to only wait two months to package Evans. So we could still make a deal before the season started, sending those three off for a new PG upgrade potentially. Could make that deal at the very end of August.

Looks like it's guaranteed for 1 million this season, 1 million next season, and I believe 750,000 the third season. S o if he is traded for, say, Beasley, and then waived, there is a 1 million dollar hit on the cap. Which, for a team looking for immediate relief, is better than the 4.5-5 million dollar hit.

They apparently turned it down when Minny offered it as they didn't want his buy out eating into their capspace.

Re: Gomes
Well tomorrow is the last day and Miami is still trying to clear as much cap room as possible to land two super FA to go with Wade...looks like Bosh and LeBron are meeting in Miami shortly. I would trade Gomes for Beasley in a heartbeat regardless of his 'head' issues. He is a tradeable asset later if nothing else and it's not like he is a stiff. Where else are you are you going to get 15 points and 6+ rebounds from anyone you pick up with the MLE?
If Portland really wants to improve their talent with someone who can make their team better now, Beasley is that possibility. As much as I like Dante and the new kid Babbitt, Beasley would give you waaay more than either of those two from day one. This team has a lot of character and one guy who isn't really a bad guy, just lacking in focus is not going to ruin that or the leadership here isn't what we think it is.

Beasley again? It's already been said Miami turned down Minny and that deal. Why, oh, why must people still bring it up?

I totally agree that if you can get Beasley for Gomes, you do it. Beasley can really score the ball and the Blazers need more firepower on the bench.
How do you think the Blazers are feeling about the luxury tax? Any deal with Gomes will mean that the Blazers will go into the tax if they use the MLE. Would that be okay, or would the team need to make some further move to get under the tax?
