Round of 16 Discussion : Spain vs Portugal

Post#1 » by JRG » Sat Jun 26, 2010 1:43 am

Didnt see a thread for this game even though its probably one of the most interesting matches in the round of 16.

We got 2 teams who are usually both underachievers. Although Spain has a Euro title under there belt they havent done much on the world stage.

Both teams have had there up and down moments. Spain possibly showing a little weakness with a loss to the Swiss and a goal given up to an undermaned Chile.

Games up in the air though. Who do you have.

I want to take my Portuguese to take this one 2-1. Hopefully

I think it will be 2-1 Portugal with the winning goal coming in overtime.

should be an interesting game....Spain is fighting some fitness issues whereas Portugal seem like they're ready to go against anyone.

I expect Portugal to play very competitively but again it will come down to how CR performs.

2-0 Portugal win. Vai Portugal!!!!!!

I think this is going to be a boring game, I expect Portugal to play like they did against Brazil, line up defensively and wait for the counter attacks. With that said 2-0 Spain, if it goes extra time or even penalties, Portugal takes it.

EDIT: Put up a poll OP.

Frankly I think both of these teams are came into the tourney massively over-rated. In fact I think the weakest semi-finalist comes from this quadrant. Paraguay is sound defensively and will make it hard on either of these teams, but I still think one of these two will progress, in which case they'd be my underdogs against Uruguay, Brazil/Holland or Germany/Argentina.

Portugal wasn't overrated, everyone hated them and were saying they sucked. As for Spain, after their collapse at the Confederations cup nobody was rating them highly. As for overrated you might want to try Italy, France, Holland, and England.

I didn't see a single article where they weren't listed among the top three at least. Which is no wonder because their squad is better than any other team's and they have a pretty good coach.
Edit: I'm talking about Spain of course.

yea, Spain was given the second best odds to win the cup by bookmakers which is probably the best way to gauge how public in general rates teams. on the flip side while losing out in group stages was unexpected, nobody expected much from Italy and France past knockout rounds.

Seriously?

Maybe you don't expect them to take the WC but from an individual skills point of view both teams would've had the class to make the quarter or semi finals.

France was in complete disarray before coming to the WC with a terrible head coach, most people were aware that these factors would overpower their talent level. just look at the first couple of pages of the Group A thread, only about half the people had them advancing from their group, hardly a perception you would see towards a superpower.

as for Italy, there was already strong contention that this squad had the worst attacking talent in their wc history and they were concerns about age and speed of the backfield. don't think anybody would have given them a chance against Spain in quarters even if they would have advance through groups and second round due to experience and weak opponent factors.
