It took me a little while to realize this but upon reflection it makes sense. Sterling is first and foremost a businessman. He cares a lot more about making money than about putting out a good product. This his primary reason for pursuing LeBron. The Clippers, while one of the most profitable franchises, is one of the least valuable, rated at around 300 million dollars. The Cleveland Cavaliers, an otherwise unremarkable franchise outside of LeBron, is rated at around 475 million dollars in franchise value.
Given that Sterling has convinced himself that he will sign LeBron he wants to maximize his profit and therefore would not even give a minority stake to someone else as it would negatively impact his overall profits. Of course the irony is that Geffen would greatly increase Sterling's chance of getting LeBron but Sterling's massive ego will not allow him to admit to this fact. Thus, once the Clippers lose out on LeBron and Sterling no longer has such an immediate franchise-altering option available to him, he will become more amenable to selling a portion of the team; we can only hope.

I really like 1840s merchant vessels. Basketball on the other hand, I can take it or leave it...

Re: Why Sterling won't sell to Geffen...yet
If Sterling was a good businessman he'd have the foresight to realize he has 0% chance of signing LeBron.
If both LeBron and Geffen are in play, then Sterling takes a risk either way. If Sterling sells a share to Geffen now before LeBron has signed anywhere, he gets less value than if he theoretically signs LeBron first. OTOH selling a share to Geffen raises the profile of the franchise, and would increase his chances of landing FA's afterward- which would raise the value of his remaining share.
If Sterling waits until he possibly strikes out in the top-level FA market (which I anticipate he will, there are too many suitors this time around), then the Clippers will be less attractive to outside investors.

Exactly. I'd feel so much better about the Clips future if Sterling sold the team, even if LeBron didn't sign here as a result

I'll take Geffen over LeBron 10 times out of 10.

Yet if we had Geffen, we'd actually have a chance (albeit very small) at LeBron!

Agreed
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!
