Whats the story on Danny Ferry

Post#1 » by DusterBuster » Tue Jun 29, 2010 9:11 pm

Reports are that Danny Ferry is the Blazers #1 choice for their GM spot and a "source close to Ferry" claims that he's extremely interested in the job. What's his pros and cons Cavs fans?

This is just off the top of my head... For pros, he always comes out as the winners in a trade.. He only goes after players with good character. Usually offers a good contract when re-signing players, never overpays. He drafts well in the 2nd round (Daniel Gibson, Danny Green). Haven't had any lottery picks during his tenure, the highest pick we've had during his time was 19, and that turned out to be JJ Hickson.. The other was 25, and that was Shannon Brown. I guess he is somewhat decent when it comes to evaluating talent.

For cons, free agent signing can improve. Ferry tends to go after a lot of veteran players. He may be too safe when it comes to making deals, in other words, he may "sit on his hands" like some Cavs fans may say.

Other than that, if I were a Blazer fan, I'd be glad to have him as a GM.. He is only going to improve the team. Good luck.

Isn't Paul Allen more of a hands-on owner? A big reason why Ferry left Cleveland was because Gilbert became more involved (not that I blame him tho, it is his money at stake in the biggest off-season in franchise history after all) and Ferry seemed to want free reign over the decisions.

Like Exile said, he was a bit conservative in trades, which played a big part in putting us in the situation we're in (limited future). I'm not sure how that will work for Portland, personally I think you need to consolidate some talent and get a true #2 there. He seemed to be a big proponent of depth here, which was a problem IMO, and Portland may face the same issue.

I think he's a bit overrated by some, though. He hasn't been able to get into the draft much despite attempts year in and year out. Practically all of his deals were simply for players nobody else wanted, so they were fairly cut and dry IMO...rather than being part of some sort of genius master plan. His signings weren't of players highly coveted elsewhere either...like Moon and Parker....but they weren't bad signings either.

So ultimately I think while he's overrated by some (mostly Cavs fans), he's still one of the better GMs in the league.....he doesn't necessarily make many "bad" moves....but he likes to stay on the safe side a bit too much IMO.

ETA: To be fair, it should be noted that LeBron restricted moves to a certain extent. He wasn't very patient and wanted to win now...so Ferry had to work around that a bit, but Ferry still took the safe route more often than not.

Even though we had Lebron James, we didn't get to the playoffs until Ferry came on board.

Also he is VERY Loyal (that's a Blessing and a cursing)

Wouldnt it be funny if Ferry ends up there and Pritchard ends up here? My take on Ferry is that he is good at taking advantage of other teams when they want to drop salary. But he isnt as aggressive in aquiring young talent and draft picks. A very solid GM though, he isnt going to trash a team like as Isiah Thomas type GM.

No GM has total anonymity. Every GM in the league has to run a trade by his owner before they can pull the trigger. Paul Allen isn't a meddling owner as much as it's perceived. It's the people within his inner circle that can cause problems. But even those peoples aren't a problem when Paul trusts his GM. Pritchard made some pretty major faux pas, particularly talking down about management when KP didn't exactly get his way, ultimately, Paul Allen just lost his trust in Kevin Pritchard, hence why he's not out of a job.

Portland needs someone who's an aggressive trader, team president Larry Miller has said that's a top priority they're looking for in a replacement GM.

I'm not too worried about the draft. The Blazers were able to resign their top scouts, so they should be fine there.

This is a bit unfortunate. The Blazers have spent the past 4 years with a GM who likes to "stay on the safe side", so that's not good.
